Couldn't you orbit the earth at any altitude greater than the highest peak? Say 29,029 feet?
Maybe a better question would be at what altitude do they leave the atmosphere. Or at what altitude and velocity do they need to reach where they can orbit without having to keep accelerating forward using the earth's gravitational pull.
Or you can pick an Omnifi DMP1 for just a little more and get all that plus WIFI sync capabilities. Also, any head unit with an AUX in will work with it or you can use an FM modulator.

I finally got the apps to run on Linux without jinitiator.
I fired up konqueror, with a sun 1.4 jvm, changed the browser identification to MAC, and the apps launched. Only problem is that ctl-F11 doesn't seem to execute queries in the forms, but you can execute from the menu.
I'm sure playing on a PC will be easy enough. The small resoultion can easily be handled with two windows. One takes input from keyboard/joystick only, the other takes input from the mouse.
do the clients you are using have a java vm installed? If they do, you can just open a browser and run the applet version of the vnc client delivered from the vnc server.
Just curious, why would you use software for this, when you could use a 30 dollar piece of hardware? Are there other benifits to zonealarm other than just blocking incoming traffic? With a little hardware router, you get that plus the ability to use NAT if you want to connect other machines, and port forwarding if you want to let certain ports through that you think are safe enough.
Like it or not, people are comfortable with Windows, and some won't use anything else.
I agree that people use what they are comfortable with. That said, I also think that people that go to a library to user the internet, not specifically to use windows. Give them something they are familiar with. Linux can be dressed up to be as ugly as windows:)

You can easily setup 40-50 of these clients on junk old junk hardware(P90s, 16-32 MB ram) using an ltsp server with just a 3.2 gig chip and 3 gigs of ram. You also get centralized administration, and no hard drives on the client machines to worry about. All for the just the price of the hardware.
Cool, I get to plug my new project and be on-topic.
k12wincd is a CD image that includes open office as well as others. Similar to gnuwinCD. I should be burning 250-300 of these this summer to be handed out in the fall.
That was a horrible analogy. It is as ridiculous as trying to use 9 women to have a full pregnancy in one month. Some things must be done in serial, yet some things can indeed be worked parallel. There are many, many problems in Arizona(I'm a resident) that can definetly be helped simply by the re-allocation of law enforcement resources.
Arizona has serious immigration and a drug trafficking problems. Some parts of Phoenix, Tuscon, Mesa, and others cities could be cleaned up with the help of the FBI. There will always be problems with crime, but busting kids for file sharing should be considered low on the priority scale.
What difference would that make? A non-compete clause is only valid while you are still employed. If he's working for MS now, he had better be competing against Suse.
You just got people to mod him down and you just linked back to his current post.
I Feel kinda bad for the dude though, he made a debateably insightful post, and was able to do it as a first post because he's a subscriber.
Bravo on your troll though.

Oh ok, then you'd be using Postgres then.;)
Postgres is a really good feature rich database. And its free. Oracle is an incredible database. And its expensive. Oralce is also a huge assortment of applications. Human Resources, Accounts Recievable, Accounts Payable, Inventory, General Ledger, e-commerce(iStore), appliction server, adminstration tools, etc.
This is like Fry's on-the-cheap Linux systems. They cost ~$250 US, and use woefully outdated parts to achieve that low price. Adding a Windows license would kick that price up considerably.
In all fairness, they have upped the quality on the parts a little. The ones Fry's has been selling lately have been ~199 and come with a 1.7Gig Athlon. They did replace the crap called ThizLinux with Lindows which is only slightly better. Still it would be cool if they used a more proven distro like fedora, mandrake, suse, or debian.
One other thing I'd like to see them do with these machines is provide a video chip that can do hardware accelerated openGL. Last time I checked the video chip they use only has accelerated directX drivers.
Adding a Windows license would kick that price up considerably.
Absolutely! The Fry's ad shows the about the same hardware ever few days but alternates between windowsXP and Linux version. The price change is significant. Its about ~399 when it comes with windows.
Yes, there is a windows port of pan. I've used it and it works as well as the linux version.
The whole point of this thread (great-grandparent post) was that a way to get started on linux was to start using open source software on windows that has linux ports.
I used this strategy for a school in my area that is now using LTSP I got the started with OpenOffice.org and programs like tuxpaint. Even threw in some SDL games. When the time came to switch over, the programs that they were used to from the previous year were still there. I also put an ugly windows theme (just for this first year) to keep them familiar with the environment.
Pan is the by far the best newsreader out there on any operating system. Outlook express doesn't even come close when it comes to handling multi-part attachments.
He even pronounced Linux correctly. That Rick James episode has to be the single funniest half-hour I've ever seen on tv. The Prince spoof was pretty good too. I hope Charlie Murphy does more stuff on his show, those two episodes were brilliant.
When my kid was 2 i built him a redhat5.1 machine. At the time it was mostly to keep him from banging on my keyboard when i was trying to work. Since then he's gone back an forth between windows/ linux sometimes dual booting. Right now he's 7 and I got him on mandrake10. A couple of years ago I had to build my wife her own computer because my son didn't want her on his computer.

the omnifi is quite a piece of junk (i know, i own one).
Just curious.. what don't you like?
I own one too and am very happy with it.
Just calling it a piece of junk sounds like flamebait to me.

Definetly little effort relatively speaking.
This would be really cool, especially for the pure java stuff.
If they released some of those API's they could be dropped right into GCJ's classpath making GCJ much more usefull.
It definetly works with forms apps.
:)
I'm using it for the 11.5.8 applications. We use AR, AP, OE, GL, Inventory, etc. at the office, and its fine.
Not sure how it works for discoverer though, most of my queries are just done through sqlplus

That's the general idea of these CDs:
k12wincd
The OpenCD
Gnuwin II
Burn copies, share them with your friends, tell them to make copies.
Get People familiar with the software first, then the migration to linux is easy.

Cool stuff like this is indeed coming. Jim has been kicking major ass. Check out this post for some of the new features.
Can you use sound on the clients?
Sound is working on my k12ltsp setup
