  1. I though Australia was free market... on Consumer Genetic Testing Available In Australia · · Score: 0

"After the banning of direct-to-consumer. . ." I'm confused. This isn't direct to insurance provider, this isn't direct to employer, this isn't direct to medical professional. This is direct to me. So your saying I can't go to the local Walgreen's and buy a home test kit to see what secrets my dna holds? Not even for shits and giggles? So, that would make my nifty living room sofa art (www.dna11.com) illegal? I'm dumbfounded. Its my DNA, I should be able to do what ever I damn well please with it. Test it, change it, copyright it, sell it, clone it. . . If I have money and boredom there should be absolutely no one that should be able to tell me I can't solicit a test from any company i want for any of my genetic material I feel like having tested. Does this make things like sending your DNA to NatGeo to see what ancient tribal groups you are from illegal? Or does this only prevent you from being tested for genetic defects?

I love cage fighting/MMA, collect guns and computers and 8-bit game consoles, love TiVo (own three), hunt, drink light domestic beer, love pizza, play lots of video games with my buddies, Cheer for the Razorbacks and the Colts, work as a bouncer at a bar, am gay, and have been married to my husband for 3 months. The best I get is TiVo suggesting "Rules of Engagement" and a coupon in the mail for Monostat 1-Day Yeast Infection Cure. Take your average convenience store... tell the clerk to disappear and monitor the cameras for a half an hour. Only a small number of people will leave the cash for their purchase on the counter. Most will loot and bail.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. Where I live there are stands hocking everything from honey to dolls along the highway in people's front yards. Usually there is nothing but a price and a jar. Customers are expected to pick thier item, leave money, and make change from the jar if needed. They system works well and people rarely take advantage of it. Granted this is in the country but I have seen the same thing at hotdog stands in New York City, tell the guy what you want on your dog, make your change from the pile of it on the cart, grab your dog and go. Generally people are happy to take part in and not take advantage of a system they feel provides them with something of value, is convienient, and repectful of them as a customer.

When LCD's were still pretty expensive, the NYSE replaced all of thier CRT's on the trading floor with LCD's. There were a great many write-ups in biz mags about the space savings, but the trumpets were sounding for the sheer power savings which translates into real cash. Almost immediatly many of my clients with large numbers of computers began requesting LCDs. The justification is, it is easy to buy something expensive and put it in a projected budget. The day to day savings on utilities are actually weighed as more important because those are on-going costs.

Simply put, pulling a little extra money out of the procurement cookie jar and having your operating budget drop is a manager's wet dream.

Same goes for Government agencies. A budget for aquiring new assets is easy to tinker with, day to day operating expenses run much thinner.

Yes, LCDs are easier on your eyes. My eye doctor told me to switch to an LCD to help slow my run-away myopia. Large companies and government agencies buying LCDs have nothing to do with this. Its simple economics.
