Seriously, if your dignity is somehow attached to an OS, program or any other technology you really have some issues. Why do people treat things like this as a personal insult? It's business, pure and simple. If anyone thinks IBM or HP or any other company is embracing Linux for any warm and fuzzy reasons you are delusional. It's about the bottom line and making the right business choices.
Because you aren't the average consumer. They average person just wants to run all the programs their friends do with the least amount of effort. Linux does not fill teh bill for them.
Technical documents are far from the majority of documents and publications made on computers these day. The right tool for the job is always my mantra and if TeX was the right tool for me I'd learn it. However, I have yet to find a need in document work that I haven't been able to fill with Word or Corel Draw.
So, how on earth does a program like this help the average user? You really think you are going to convert anyone that isn't already technically literate? Sorry, but what works in academia doesn't always (or even usually) work on the streets.
Why is it on Slashdot? Because it makes Microsoft look bad (well to someone that is clueless maybe). If this was reversed it never would have been posted or would have been shredded instantly by the anti-MS hordes. It's a slow news day so I assume they posted this to get the flames stoked.
This is like saying that you don't need Photoshop because GIMP can do most things. That depends on what you are doing. I tried OO before I got 2003 and it was missing some of the functions that I use regularly.
I have Office 2003 on an Athlon 2600+ with 1GB of RAM. I just tested and every office app opened in under 5 seconds. Then I opened a 40 page document in Word and again it was under 5 seconds. Also, the 2003 version of winword.exe takes up 16 MB.
Come on people, it's a computing platform. Even at it's pinnacle it's still just a tool. Anyone that thinks of OSes in terms of "hot or not" shouldn't be using a computer at all.
I would respond with a lengthy post on why this article has more to do with the view of someone from outside North America looking in, but I'm too sore from the lashings my MS masters have given me today.
I agree. Maybe in poorer countries something like this could replace Wintel, but in countries where people spend thousands on killer PCs this isn't going to make that much of a dent. The Wal Mart PC appeals to a cerain demographic, but that demographic isn't the entire world.
I don't know what people like this are complaining about? I have a router, I have software firewall/AV program and I update when I get notification. Dealing with SPAM takes far more effort than dealing with any kind of attacks if you take a few precautions and aren't naive.
This is just like when CDs first came out and people were transfering older recordings without compensating for the new medium. Once restoration techniques become more established they will be less invasive. I'd rather have the vibrance of color and clear sound than some sense of nostalgia. The Looney Tunes restorations have been pretty damn good sa far.
If you want to convince yourself that Allard is some kind of lonely loser then go ahead. Last time I checked he was fairly well connected, had a decent position in the games industry and is most likely richer than anyone posting in this thread (maybe even all of us combined). But, hey don't let you Slashgoggles color your perception.
How much court time are all these suits taking up? Also, who is footing the bill for these lawsuits? Is the RIAA spending royalty money from artists, that they complain get no money as it is, to fund this?
So, please tell us what your friend did with his new purchases that you couldn't do with a PC running Windows or Linux? AS for Windows "screwing up this and that" you think maybe it was an app running in Windows or maybe an end user problem? You are taking one persons poor experience and trying to make a parallel that doesn't exist. By that logic if I or anyone I know has problems getting out photos or videos or anything else done on a Mac it means Apple is mediocre as well. Your argument is specious at best.
I agree. Apple just refines, repackages and up-markets ideas. They add the veneer that makes an MP3 a "hot" item. They aren't really any more innovative than many tech companies out there.
Lawmakers are out of touch, or maybe just in touch with lobbyists. It's amazing that people that squander away millions in fraud cases will most likely get less time than someone that does this.
There far more suitable alternatives that would cost far less for recording lectures. Why the hell does it always have to be some trendy device? I'd be pissed if they were spending a portion of my tuition on iPods.
I agree. It's been said time and time again and I will add to the pile that if Linux had a lage market share it also would be the target of virus and malware writers. I know the response will be - "Well at least with Linux it will get patched right away!" and sure, but just like Windows it takes a user that pays attention. Linux will not cure SPAM, stupid users, and idiots that forward jokes to everyone in their address book. A second core would be a welcome addition for any OS as long as it is actually used to it's fullest.
Well, now it's Sony Acid. They have been doing this type of thing for years. They've had Acid Planet remix contests almost as long as Acid has been around with major artists like Garbage and Madonna. So, why is it when something like this happens on the Mac people act like it's groundbreaking?
What the hell is that supposed to mean? As far as tech goes Canada id right up there in most respects. We've had widespread use of debit cards for years now and it's only just catching on in the US.

The only Windows failure I've had in the last 2 years has been a hard drive crash. YMMV.

If I get a friend to tape a show for me are we breaking the law?

Honestly, from any perspective a PS2 is NOT a BMW.

Yes, any time anyone is critical of Apple it's a troll. Get over yourself.
