I was glad when I left my LPs behind. Sure, for the first few years there were problems, but the format has been around long enough that people know all the tricks on making sound good. Cleaning LPs, removing static, the wear and tear on needles and the vinyl are all bad memories. I have no interest in scratching, so this is just a joke idea to me. CDs may go away, but vinyl is NOT a decent replacement.
Totally wrong. What will give Halo 3 long legs is the multiplayer. Until H3 came out the biggest game on Xbox Live was Halo 2 and that's years after release. The pattern you mention is really only applicable to single player games like Bioshock or games with weak multiplayer that no one bothers with. Halo 3 will continue to sell well through 2008 at least.
Too bad the attach rate for the Wii is abysmal compared to the 360. In the long run that's where the money is made. It doesn't help Nintendo to have a few millions Wii's out there that are used for Wii Sports and nothing else.
No, it's not Microsoft's fault that they don't want to open their formats. I don't see why any company should be forced to if they choose to keep their data formats closed. It's an open market and if people think that's a bad idea they will use whichever product does what they want. I don't think any private company should be forced by government to open up their proprietary formats.
That makes it worth of Slashdot is the Linux tie in. It's an average shooter with a bunch of gameplay mutations. Nothing outstanding or different enough to make it stand above the rest.
Anyone that takes this guys seriously needs to reevaluate their standards for professional analysis. It only takes a few minutes of googling to see this guy has been about as accurate as the staff of Jo-Jo's Psychic Hotline. I think coin flipping actually might be more accurate than Pachter. He's just become a defacto resource lazy journalists turn to for a quote. About the same speed as Mark Saltzman.
Wrong. People working in a commercial environment need a stable, intuitive and robust application that has some industry standard features and a short learning curve if they haven't used it before. Maybe you have time to putz around with contributions, but that's not what a commercial 3D company needs to do, they need to get things done on time and to budget.
Right, but until then no one had the perfect storm of ingredients that WoW does. So, now everyone is trying to capture what ever that is and relabel it and it's not happening.
Well it is an argument because I disagree. I thought it was a decent zing on Apple, but hey different strokes for different folks. You would have saved yourself some time and effort if you didn't bother to comment at all. Next time, just go with that.
Oh, so it's okay to post about people posting about it? All you Sony defenders really need to take a step back and realize that Sony is just feeling the backlash of their own marketing and PR. Games are more popular now and gamers are more savvy. You can't put out press releases with big hand waving declarations and then do a 180 without anyone noticing and calling you on it. I mean Microsoft got all kinds of flaming for poor failure rates and then for lack of response. Even when Microsoft came clean and refunded repair bills and provided extended warranties people still gave them shit. It's an equal opportunity crap flinging arena.
Or maybe call Sony on their bullshit? They did a lot of things right with the PS1 and PS2 and they achieved success with that approach. With the PS3 they seemed to just assume that their momentum would carry them with not only the devs, but the public as well. It turns out that's not the case. The whole "rumble is last gen" line they had was bullshit from day one and everyone knew that. Now they say, "Oh we have rumble, but it's "next-gen" rumble." Then it turns out that it's actually identical to the PS2. This is what is earning them the backlash. Their arrogance and bold face lying.
It's the same cry for any "must have" product. If people feel some sense of entitlement and ownership of a brand/product they get emotionally invested. The 2 worst groups I have seen on the net for this are gamers and Apple users. Go against the flow with those 2 groups and be prepared to put on your asbestos jumper.
Not everyone that disagrees with a stories merit are trolls. There is a limited space on Slashdot's front page and sometimes articles get posted that have little to no value except to those with a vested interest. Those are usually the stories that get lambasted.
Saying BR is ahead of HD-DVD right now is like saying that some indie band outsold another by orders of magnitude (which is BS) and comparing that to Justin Timberlake (DVD). Seriously, the HD formats sell so little in comparison to DVD it's not making much difference in the retail space. This Xmas I think there will be a marked increase in sales, but DVD will still own that market and will continue to for many years to come. Also, you are wrong when you say MS is the only HD-DVD supporter. Check your facts, or did you also miss the recent Paramount and Dreamworks announcements?

Second Life might not be a monster success, but for whatever bizarre reason it gets tons of mainstream press.

How many WoW killers are out there? How many times has a follow up game ever been as successful as the game it's trying to imitate?

Personal insults, the last defense of a poor argument.

The context is the article, read it.
It was a joke... some times the knee jerk reactions on this site are amazing.

And get the privilege of paying a $3000 phone bill - http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/10/the-3-000-iphone-bill/
I have a $25 per month plan and even when I don't go over my alloted minutes with all the extra fees I pay $45 a month through Telus.
Also, BR titles are available on HD-DVD in other countries and since most are region free it's all gravy - http://www.audioholics.com/news/editorials/blu-rays-dirty-little-secret

Is now newsworthy? The standards around here for what gets posted baffle me.
Right, I forgot. M$ $ucks, etc. and so forth.
Looks like China has thrown i's weight behind HD DVD - http://www.n4g.com/industrynews/News-66305.aspx
This could be bad for Blu-Ray. A third format is not needed and I don't see why anyone would put money into it now that cheap HD-DVD will be coming.
