These things are fairly robust for only having 20Mhz to work with allowing telnet access, FTP access, and even http access straight out of the box. This is one of the easiest microcontrollers I've seen to program do to the fact that you simply write Java code in your regular IDE (IDEA!!), rename the compiled.class file to a.tini file and FTP it over to the board. To start your program, you simply type 'java Test.tini &' and it loads into the background. These boards even have garbage collection (which makes things easier for you, but can slow things down). We were able to get the simple LED flashing demo up and running in about 10 minutes. I consider this a pretty big accomplishment since we have yet to get a serious demo running on the C-based microcontrollers from Atmel which continue to tell us we can't flash them due to some lock bits somewhere on the development kit. While some people have mentioned that the TINI board isn't really Java, I have to argue that the fact that I can write my code using my Java IDE and upload it nearly unchanged makes a pretty strong statement that this board is indeed running Java. At $100 for full Ethernet connectivity and a 20Mhz processor, I think it's a pretty good deal especially if you're a Java programmer looking to get into embedded systems. Now I just have to figure out how we tie it to our RF transmission system!
Tremendous innovators such as microsoft deserve to be rewarded with short term patent-monopolies to use their inventions - otherwise why bother to innovate? Mono would just have to use alternate api's or wait for the patents to expire to attain 100% compatibility.
Passport is important not because of it being a breakthrough technologically speaking, but because the company is in a position to drive most people toward being suscribers of it. There is already a Large list of participating sites. There are many current users of it and Microsoft will be driving more users towards Passport as it integrates it in their upcoming release of Windows. Microsoft has also developed a toolkit to enable current web merchants to integrate their services with passport. To the end user, there is a clear benefit: they only have to log into a single network and not remember multiple passwords across sites on the internet. Companies that adopt passport will have a competition advantage over those that dont.
this story IMHO furthers the argument that Redmonds current stance of looking the other way while their valuable.net (api and IP) is embraced by the mono projoct is really just a.... grand conspiracy to cripple the free software movement from within, by covertly embedding an unnecessary, yet seductively useful, patented technology in the very heart of the linux operating system's second most popular desktop environment
i guess all the doubters will be quiet now, this proves Microsoft can be trusted with.NET after all. no more hidden APIs or secret protocols from the boys at Redmond - from here on its all public domain open standards. When will java get features like generics - no time soon i guess. Microsoft have once again proven themselves to be true innovters. (anyways back to frobnicating with file selector)
thankyou, you're correct this slashdot story is essentially just a dumb troll, which regurgitates all the usual fud around mono. i have asked the editors to remove/amend the story, but unfortunately there is nothing they can do.
Why not build on the existing attempts at a free Java environment (GCJ, ClassPath, etc.), or other original and truly free language/platforms like Python or Ruby?
there was no money to be made in doing that.
It entrenches Microsoft's standards further
hey, i like microsoft. clippy, passport and outlook are my favourite software
the ONLY reason for mono to exist is to provide a 100%-compatible environment for running apps written to the Microsoft standard on non-Windows platforms
siince novell owns ximian and novell licenced unix copyright to SCO, SCO sold a licence to Microsoft. Microsoft licensed Java from Sun, Microsoft are evil so Sun withdrew the license. Microsoft copied unlicensed java technology into.NET, novell bought ximian, ximian own$ mono, mono is not under GPL / LGPL license or Microsoft shared source license. If Chewbacca lives on Endor you must acquit. The defense rests.
actually knoppix used to carry a half-hearted gnome desktop effort back in the day, until klaus understandably dropped it to make room for extra kDE eye candy. there are already plenty of essential gtk apps on the Knoppix cd today, just no desktop. the cool thing about kde 3.1 is it enforces KDE themes and colors onto gtk programs so you can hardly tell the difference apart from things like transparent snap-on menus, font rendering hints, and other (imo) unneccceesssary eye-candy. Eclipse running on knoppix manages to look like kde native which is no mean feat - tips hat to trolltech (and their evil canopy group overloards)
knoppix still includes the excellent fluxbox, which of all the current destop managers shows the most promise.
i'm not sure eclipse is really practical for daily use under mono just yet. its useful mainly to demonstrate these two things: the maturity of the IKVM JITer and the maturity of the Mono runtime as it is able to host this technologically advanced VM to run a large and complex application.
IKVM also helps bridge the two worlds: Java and CIL. Your Java code can then be loaded and used by CIL applications (C#, VB, etc) all running together.
personally i don't rate Eclipse much as a development environment compared to Visual Studio.NET. But i am a big fan of the Standard Widget Toolkit (SWT)
i agree, what makes.NET so great is visual studio. it just about writes your code for you, i'm using it to write quite a complex program right now and i'm not sure how 80% of my code works but it just does. Ah, i sure do love them wizards, so many pretty wizards [sob]
Project ELBA has the best summary ever: ELBA is an interim but production ready enterprise application server written in Java. The goal of the ELBA project is to die by having all of its functionality replaced by the Apache Geronimo project.
apparently marc flowery is chomping over this. He has been flaming everyone all over the place, calling the people running appache hypocrites, pulling CVS write privalages from core jboss developers, and trying to make out the LGPL has some kind of mystical closed source properties that no-one else can posibly understand or explain! ha! how much do i loathe flowery, how i laughed as i downloaded allTheDocs.zip from kazza, now his empire is crumbling around him...

Most of the time the mods are on the ball and MdI has terrible karma, this account (and even the IP address of my ISP) has spent weeks blocked from posting to/.after complaints from ximian! its much more of a challenge to post a carefully crafted troll at -1 to get modded up to +5. After Mono & SourceGear Move Forward MdI briefly had excellent karma... bothered?
No, this account is intended to create angry responses just like the ones you always provide. Thakyou kindly the bungi

ok real is a proprietary format theres no arguing that but the default install of Ximian Desktop 2 includes an integrated RealPlayer along with all the other net surfing necessities such as Flash, Java Runtimes, and a few other goodies that everyone should get in default OS installs but do not.
XD2 is available for all the most popular linux distros
out of interest what format would you suggest? Last time i checked the ogg video format had stabalised but wasn't ready for prime-time... are there any other contenders?
I stronly suspect Ximian marketing pay/. to post articles about XD2, mono, etc
the/. editors searched long and hard and eventually found a positive (but unfortunately lame) review (DEF positive review: a review that doesn't say something along the lines of "gnome is just a dock, XD2 is an expensive dock with a better default theme")
right now Ximian PR persons are composing angry emails to cmdr'taco, demanding a refund.

Wierd. I think the paperclip is a great idea.
