I guess that if you fill a plastic bag with water you automatically get a lens which has a () shape, as opposed to the )) shape you normally get in glasses. It might work, but you not gone look like the coolest kid on the bloc wearing two fish-bowls on your nose.
Companies need internal software. They take an OS project, and pay a dude to add some whistels. The project grows... Young programmers need training. They learn the job on an OS project. Sure they aren't getting rich, but their CV improves... The whole picture of O.S. beeing made by 100% succers who throw their lives away is a little far streched if you ask me. There are anyway plenty alternatives: double licensing, an O.S. "Base" project with a commercial add-on for MS-compatibility,... Seems to me like some people are still afraid of change...
we should see increasing divergence once millions of people can experiment with new ideas
My god!, even more bored housewives who are going to take their clothes off...

And here we go again; the eternal discussion on slashdotting. Expect proposals for bittorrent like solutions and demands for mirrors. I would just like to note that all european ISP's run all their web traffic through giant Squid servers because the intercontinental traffic is so fscking expensive. If american ISP's did the same then this problem would not exist.
It will not be used as an absolute barrier, but it will be used when evaluating if something is spam. I get ALL mails, but those which the server thinks are spam, are marked "***SPAM***" in the topic. I can therefore decide to make an Outlook-rule, depending on how afraid I am for false positives. I guess each mail will continue to be evaluated based on contents and origin, but failing the SPF test will give it a "-3 UNTRUSTED" or something.
and create a HUMONGOUS monopoly which would have made Ma BELL look tiny... Cut one cable and if 9/11 happens again more then 10 miles away, you'll never know it....
Instead of trying to standardise packaging, wouldn't it be more realistic to define one standard file where different package managers can fetch information on how a computer is organised? In this way, the authors of different package managers could claim their program is "compliant" with this new standard. Freedom of choice, but still a standard.
My brother is a lawyer and helps me with legal problems.
My father is a dentist and does my teeth for free.
My niece is a doctor and looks at my throat during family dinners.
My buddy spent a day helping me move.
Start to get my drift?
They should try to spend their time on programs that are more usefull, like those thingies that prevent your IP adress from being visible on the net, or keep your computer clock accurate....
I work for a Biotech company. We make enzymes in 80 m^3 tanks. And we really only need one bacteria to start! Most organisms are genetically modified in order to increase yield anyway. So I don't really get the problem. One of our best selling enzymes was found in an organism less then 50 km from the factory. It doesn't always have to come from the poles.
They are not settling. EU has shown clear signs they are not interested in a settlement. This is a fine and means "guilty as charged". There is a psychological difference, if not a financial one.
If you read the history of information-gathering after WW II, the successes are few and far between. The CIA pictures during the Cuba crisis is probably the only time CIA changed the course of history. Apart from that, what did they do? Blow up a pipeline which got repaired and wasted the lives of the people who were spying for them...
As you will see from the other comments, life in CS sucks. I am a VB programmer with some minimal Linux skills (ducks to avoid rotten tomatoes). Yet I make more $$$ then most of the people posting here. Why? Because I am a chemist. I was hired by a Biotech company to work in their lab. This is "OK", because I have a chemistry diploma. They would never be allowed to hire a pure I.T.-er, because these guys belong in the IT dept. Yet I spend 95% of my time doing IT related work. I like my job and chances for getting fired are almost non-existent. They NEED me.
The system shows you if an AOL pc uses it's own SMTP server. You could design the virus to use the AOL server, but if your zombie starts sending 10000+ mails through AOL's mailserver, I guess somebody is going to pull the plug..
wooohahahahah! When did you last try netbanking? At work, our mega-$$$$$$ web-apps for purchase and expense-reporting, made by the oh so european and independent SAP, go completly bonkers if you switch from MS-java to SUN-in-IE. Let alone you would get mozilla to run it.
Nope, that is plain wrong. There are many ways to encode a signal. From FFT transforms to fancy-pancy wavelet math. These will give differences you can see on a scope. On top of that, our dear ear can not hear all sounds equally well, and we even use our brain to fill in missing over/undertones. It therefore becomes a very clever science to decide which sounds you will NOT include in the MP3 because we will not be hearing / missing them anyway.

Let's sit around the fire and tell the hilarious joke about that time the cat ran off with our cassette containing that 63K Pong - clone....

Don't worry, I'm sure they take USD at most coffee-shops...

Which would assume you have a computer on the other side for decompressing...
They gonna have to run these servers with X disabled I'm afraid...
have you seen the inside of the new dell tower cases? All greeny slider thingies; and no floppy: yahooo!!!

What the f*ck are these old B/W TV screens standing on their side in the middle of the table? Do they have some "legacy" apps running on an ENIAC?

P2P in streaming? Aren't you going to run in an awefull lot of timing problems?
I heard of "hygienic assistants" before, is this a politically correct term for the guy collecting dead salad leaves?
