  1. the technology behind it on Crowdsourcing Big Brother In Lancaster, PA · · Score: 1

Something no one else has mentioned is what better uses could have been made out of this funding. You see, most of this camera network is fiber optic and some of it is wireless. Why spend $3mil putting in 160 cameras when we could have used this fiber optic/ wireless network to provide high speed internet to the whole city?! THAT would have been a much better investment, but I'm sure Comcast would have had a temper tantrum.

  2. Re:Oh is that all on How to Convert Your HD-DVD Discs to Blu-Ray · · Score: 1

I must disagree. first of all, the difference in video quality between dvd and bluray is very significant. consider: DVD = 640x480 pixels = 307,200 total pixels Bluray = 1920x1080 pixels = 2,073,600 total pixels this means that bluray has roughly 6.5x the resolution of dvd. Whether you _need_ this many pixels is up to you. Also, something that a lot of people don't seem to consider is that this format war was about more than just movies. As you can see with dvd and cd, optical disks are used for more than just movies and the same is true of bluray. once prices go down, bluray burners will become a default part of computers. As far as I know, you can back up data on them. So, aren't you glad that bluray won since its maximum capacity is 50gb vs the 30gb capacity of hd-dvd? i heard that it would be possible to make bluray disks that hold 200gb, which is even better. If they start making 200gb bluray blank media, you might be able to back up your entire pr0n collection to one disk! like my dad used to tell me, "Think before you speak!"

  3. Re:Dark matter is an optimization? on Theory Posits Early Stars Powered By Dark Matter · · Score: 1

I find this thought interesting because it is similar to an analogy I came up with recently. Rather than thinking of dark matter as unrendered parts of a scene, think of it like this: If the physical world were to be equated to an LCD monitor, then dark matter would be the electrical charges symbolizing bits of data coursing through the cpu and circuitry. Hence, the physical world is only a window into the underlying "dark matter program". Or, in a similar analogy, the physical world would be equated to the light coming out of the LCD display and dark matter is equated to the physical components of the LCD. you may call me crazy now, but I have a hunch that someday my analogy will be shown to be at least somewhat accurate.

  4. summary of pro / con on Intel Stands Up For Consumers in Next-gen DVD War · · Score: 1
it appears that 'mandatory managed copy' will still allow content producers to limit what consumers can do with the content and equipment they own well beyond the limitations imposed by copyright law. Thus the question over DRM remains: should we be policed by our own property?"

/.ers seem to think that media/drm is the only thing that "controls" what we can do with the product we "own". Microwaves don't work with the door open, some copiers wont copy money, and nail guns dont fire unless they are pressed firmly against something. Although you may think of these as "safety" issues, the idea is the same in that the product governs what we can do with it. The people promoting drm arent doing it to take away our freedom, but because they believe it is a type of "safety" featue or something.
Although I understand why DRM is supposed to be good, I disagree with it too. Primarily because it unnecesarily cripples functionality for honest users. Those who want to "steal" will continue to "steal". it only takes 1 person to crack a disc and put it on the internet for the rest.
