What I like about these guys, is the use of their canary. When they are forced by the authorities to pass your data, they're probably also forced to keep silent about this.
So what do they do? They send out a weekly 'canary' saying nothing happened. If something DOES happen, they don't send the canary.
If Cedega and Wine could run all the Windows games I play, and the few apps I depend on that don't have Linux ports, I would literally switch to Linux tomorrow.
The few apps you depend on might run under Wine, or (probably better) CodeWeavers' Crossover Office. Then dualboot if you want to game.
Child sponsorship programs are more about giving the donor a warm fuzzy feeling than actually helping.
Of course. But what's wrong with a warm fuzzy feeling? I happen to like to get to know the daily activities of a child and its family in a foreign country (Honduras, in my case). Of course Plan knows this and even exploits this, but you have to take that into account.
They may publish reassuring figures saying that "only 20% of our budget is spent on administration",
In my country, a special governmental department hands out certifications for these organizations, which are yearly reviewed. There is an amount of trust involved, but overall, I have the feeling Plan is a well-run organization. There probably have been problems in the past, I don't know.
You bastard. You said the evil word and now I can't sleep for 7 days and 7 nights.
Aaaah.... it brings back fond memories of weeks-long being swamped by specs, hundreds upon hundreds of pages of specs. And when you thought you 'got it', some idiot brought out a new document with rather creative new uses of that same spec. I love this HL7 v2/v3 standard shit!
(.....) with a service contract, and contact their professionals if you ever experience a problem with your new machine. You will be a lot happier knowing you can rely on people who help users for a living, and I can be free of the guilt of trying to do things that are perhaps over my head. I am truly sorry I have inconvenienced you like this for years. I wanted to help but of course I whould have known better."
And then before she has a chance to say something, stand up and turkey-slap her two or three times.
Why are the pronouncements of executives considered newsworthy?
Why not? You may not, but I find this very interesting. It says something about the adoption of Xen. You'd rather have an article on some technical Xen stuff, fine, but there's an outside world as well.
The Psion was excellent (I owned a Psion 3M) however, nowadays we want to be able to browse and e-mail with the software we regularly use. To use an analogy: I have always had Nokia mobile phones. Why? Because I know the menus by heart. Would it be such a hassle to relearn another interface? No, but why bother?
You're describing this except it doesn't have an ARM but some AMD processor. From the FAQ:
The proposed $100 machine will be a Linux-based, with a dual-mode display--both a full-color, transmissive DVD mode, and a second display option that is black and white reflective and sunlight-readable at 3× the resolution. The laptop will have a 500MHz processor and 128MB of DRAM, with 500MB of Flash memory; it will not have a hard disk, but it will have four USB ports. The laptops will have wireless broadband that, among other things, allows them to work as a mesh network; each laptop will be able to talk to its nearest neighbors, creating an ad hoc, local area network. The laptops will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data.
I'll never forget when the going got tough a few years back. CMG tried (and succeeded) laying off some twohundred engineers by using a loophole in the law. If I ever talk to their recruiters, I'll definitely give them a piece of my mind.
Overheard while doing an internship at Logica CMG:
Manager: "This new project should be done with new project management methods, like UML"
Senior: "Uuh, you do know that UML is a notation for diagrams?"
Manager (irritated): "Yeah, of course I know that. You know what I mean!"
If you are sure you are within your right, do the following: * Don't pay bills that you think aren't yours to pay. Instead, write back and tell them why you don't pay. Don't just throw them away! * Every time you call, start writing down dates, times and NAMES, and summarize everything that's been said * When you know enough, call again and ask for the complaint department * Write a letter to the complaint dept., telling them what happened and note what your reaction is. Demand an apology and corrective action.
Make sure that all letters are hardcopy and send with confirmation by signature.
Now inevitably comes the time when you get mail from a collecting agency. Just send them a small note, letting them know how you handled it and enclose copies of the letters.
I've dealt with stupid companies a few times and this is how I did it.
I'm a Linux user too and run IE6 (quite stable!) every now and then for the occasional broken website. I use CodeWeavers' Crossover Office, a commercial version of wine. It won't take long for the Wine hackers to get IE7 running.

Try to calculate it as a percentage of your monthly earnings. You'll see it's not that much :)
So... when can I order it for myself? I'd love to have such a nice little laptop.
- you sponsor a village
- they set up correspondence with a child of a family in the village
- they send reports on how the community is doing
- the kid sends you some drawings and pictures
If you did this, you wouldn't say things like 'all they need is food and water'.our company created an HL7 accelerator

The iSCSI protocol uses TCP/IP for its data transfer. AoE only uses Ethernet and so supposedly has a lower overhead.

HAha, indeed I didn't really think anything wrong about the post until he replied to himself.
Baldrick: Yes, it's like goldy and bronzy only it's made out of iron.

LOL, nou de ene manager is niet de andere. Het was daarnaast toendertijd CMG, niet Logica.
