I know everyone's trying to draw an equivalency, but for the portion that people* actually use. Is there really that much of a difference?
No, but the article was about system integration companies. They hook into Windows products much more than your average user who browses, mails and IMs.
2006 and people are still developing code without a database abstraction layerThat is so ridiculous
I assume you are a developer. If you have more than 2+ years experience, you really shouldn't be saying this.
Lots of projects have a history and start with an itch. And when starting with, say, 15 screens in mind, I'm not going to set up a database abstraction layer. However, the project can grow beyond those initial 15 screens. In that case, yeah it might have been better to layer the DB away. But that's history.
Also, lots of people happen to like the versatility of plain ole' SQL. They just use Perl's DBI or PHP's MDB. Layers where they can still use SQL.
why askslashdot is being used to push agendas/post news stories
I rather see it more neutral: a lot of people come to slashdot for discussion. For this purpose, the editors often finish a submission with a rather controversial question or statement. Other times, the submitter himself already did the job. There's no pushing agendas here.
I would keep supporting it, since it keeps your code 'honest'. No dirty shortcuts just because it happens to work on PostgreSQL but instead a nice clean layer that keeps the queries out of the code. However, the submitter seems to have his opinion already:
They have essentially been given a 'free ride' all this time
I mean, isn't the whole open source thing about everyone getting a free ride?

True. However, I have the feeling that standardization sounds better :)
Solution: standardize. Where I work, IT supports either XP/Novell or Debian. If you divert, you're on your own.
If you print several thousand tri-folds, isn't it cheaper to take them to a professional printshop?
Note to self: check "Post Anonymously" if I say so in the post.
Posting anon for obvious reasons... Oh and you have to put it ON THE CD
Hmm strange... Check this out:
Rack mounting rails in the Netherlands: EUR. 20,-
Rack mounting rails in the USA: from $99 to $129
That's a pretty bad difference. Caused by pure pricing strategy or am I overlooking something?
Ummm, you didn't get the joke. Read it again, Sam.
I like the Sun boxes, but WHY THE FUCK do their rails cost more than 100 dollars?
Yeah now the tubes are full again.

HAHaha very funny. Oh wait... you're not joking, are you?

Upload Natalie Portman.
Then fly over her 3D body in realtime. Excellent!
Nice, however:

It's not going to make it. Interesting, though.
Obviously, the web server does not run on the mobile phone.
Done. Thanks, everyone!
