The habitable planet would be further away, in the habitable zone. Check out the picture.

I agree with your point. However, just to nitpick, your concept of NIH is reversed. NIH means to *refuse* to use concepts/tools that were "not invented here." In other words, companies that take the NIH approach would prefer in-house solutions to 3rd-party ones, not the other way around. So your argument is actually in support of NIH, not against it. wiki link

This is ridiculous. These people are MDs not researchers. Their primary goal is to treat, not to find causes and new cures. Thats the job of the Ph.Ds (and MD/Ph.Ds).

Every physician cannot be expected to experiment their new theory on every patient that walks in. They don't have the means to properly apply the scientific method to their theory. That's the job for researchers. It would be good if more MDs were involved in research, but to say that it is a fundamental flaw of the medical establishment is irresponsible.

Reducing the size of the platter reduces the seek time. A question like this was actually asked on the final in my Machine Structures class at Berkeley.

Here's the posted solution to the question on my final(the question was what happens when to the average latency and transfer rate as the diameter of a hard disk is increased):

"Increasing the size of the platter means that the longest seek time (the time it takes to move the head assembly to the desired track), and therefore the average seek time, increases. Seek time is the largest component of latency, even if you include the transfer itself. So a bigger disk will INCREASE the average latency.
Since the rotational speed of the disk (in RPM) is, of course, constant over the entire disk, the outer tracks are covering a greater distance during each rotation than the inner tracks. If the bit density is constant, there are more bits on the outer tracks, and so the transfer rate (bits per second) INCREASES as the diameter of the disk increases. "

So the next time you go to the doctor, don't pay. The next time you ride the subway, don't pay. The next time you take guitar lessons, don't pay. This "magical money" was never theirs, so you're obviously not stealing anything.

But when you don't pay for guitar lessons or the doctor, you're stealing their time and effort and their opportunity to see another student/customer. However, when you pirate a game, no extra time or effort put in.

Let's take a different example. You write a book. Random House offers you a $200,000 deal plus royalties. But a day before you sign the contract, I release the book onto the web so Random House cancels the deal. Now look me in the eye while I laugh at your misery, and tell me that you have not been deprived. Tell me the people downloading your book owe you nothing.

Well the same analogy holds true for someone trying-before-they-buy a game. If i weren't going to buy the book in the first place but downloaded because it was convenient for me to do so, i am not stealing any money.
