  11. News for Lamers. Stuff that is pointless. on Review: Man On The Moon · · Score: 1

I heard someone on NPR say something about the movie... It went kinda like this:

If you are expecting to see a biography of Kaufman, this is not the film for you. If you want to see something like an MTV "Rock-u-mentary", then you will like what you see. It does not dive into the person of Kaufman, it tends to highlight his career.

Not that I may believe what was said in the review (I have yet to, and plan on seeing this film), but it is typical Hollywood to pump out crap. I cannot remember the last time I saw a film that had a "star" in it or a huge budget that impressed me any.

"Pi" was the best thing I have seen in a long time.

Jon, please follow up on this... What do you base this on?

    Money?
    Hollywood Acting Rolls?
Did you see someone on the E! channel say this?
    People Magazine?

First, it would seem that any popular dead icon will be elivated to "legend", but Kaufman was an innovator. Carrey has emulated a lot of Kaufman's and Jerry Lewis' comedic tactics. Carrey is great, but he is appealing to his audiance. Kaufman was challenging. As it is with all of the greatest artists, it is those that break barriers, challenge the status quo and piss people with their work that will be remembered for their art.

  18. Too many choices... on Ask Slashdot: What Music do you Code By? · · Score: 1

I used to DJ and manage a radio station, so I have a huge collection.

I feel lost without music in the background... My choice of music has two different categories, if the task at hand is a labour of love or a job that has time constraints.

Currently if I have my nose to the wheel I will be playing Philip Glass, Can, Bach, Marty Ehrlich, Ellington, Aphex Twin, Gianlugi Trovesi (quirky Italian Jazz) or Beethoven.

If I am enjoying the job it will be the punk-lounge sounds of Make Up or New Wet Kojak, Trans Am, Tortoise, Steve Tibbets, Ween, Butthole Surfers or the Talking Heads.

That is only the beginning of the list... no one favorite here, just many mix tapes and CDRs.

    And I quote:
"All of the codecs were set to produce an encoded data rate of 128 kilobits per second (kbps), the most common data rate for MP3 files and greater than a 10:1 reduction in bit rate compared to a CD. Different data rates likely would have produced drastically different test results, especially at rates below 128 kbps. To mimic a record-company-sanctioned download, which would presumably be encoded at the highest quality available at a given bit rate, I ran all three codecs in their top sound-quality mode. "

Answer this one for me, though I think I am correct in assuming. Isn't the major drawback to MP3 the fact that most encoded from an inferior source? Most of the traded MP3s are recorded from CDs, so of course they cannot outperform the CD in quality. Most are recorded at a bit rate that will optimize downloads. Even the CDs that we buy are mastered at 16 or 20 bit. If you had an analog source directly to MP3 it should sound better than the same source to CD given that you use a higher sampling rate.

IMHO: A good move for the industry is to move to MP3 for the recording and mastering. Any ideas? A multi-track MP3 player?

No I didn't miss the point...

I can sell whatever someone is willing to pay for it at auction, and if it is legal. The point is that there are clueless suckers who will buy it without researching the alternatives, and knowing what the difference is.

You can get the "offical" RH many places. You can buy many other CDs with RH on it all over the web... Just buy the one you want, and educate youself.

If it happens to be at auction, write to the seller and ask about it...

I have been buying CDs from Cheapbytes for a couple of years. I do not need support, I like to have CD burn on hand so I can install on several machines, I do not want to wait for a d/l... etc. Looks to me like Amazon is just trying to cover there butt in the event of a problem, and people are just not educating themselves enough to be responsible consumers. If they are going to send money to someone on an auction site, they better have some idea as to what they are bidding on...
