My name is Robert Lemos, a reporter with ZDNet News. I am currently researching an article on Microsoft's ability to stop the sale of legal Windows software on eBay, and during my research, I saw your alias on the msoft@buddy.ebay.com feedback list. I wanted to get information regarding your attempted sale of Microsoft software, and if you are amenable, interview you on your sale. 1) Were you selling the original CD-ROM? 2) Was the software a standalone product that you bought at a store? Or was it included with a computer that you bought? 3) How were you notified of the "infringing action?" 4) Did eBay suspend you because of the auction? 5) Did Microsoft take further action aside from the original notification? 6) Can you give me you real name and address for quoting in the article? Thanks for your time. If you have any questions, please e-mail me. -R
I though this was humorous... you state "you can't play quake", yet this is one of their service providers:

I am a Microbiologist... I consider chirality to be two things 1) an amazing concept 2) one of those things that when explained to a 'lay-person' they will be amazed as well. Read about it.
I was a victim of this. I tried to sell an OEM copy of MS Works 2000. Unopened, never registered and it came with my machine without the option to deselect it from Dell. I posted it and it was taken down in less than 48 hrs. I received the email from eBay, but I followed it up with an email to the MS 'buddy' address. I tried to post negative feedback and because the action was not bid on by the buddy address it stated 'all negative feedback must be transaction related'.
In my dialog with a Microsoft representative I had asked "Is there a class action suit that I can join that is related to this?" The reply was "perhaps there is a group of misinformed individuals like yourself that can join together and start one..."
I also posted the entire dialog to Slashdot, but I guess it was not big news back in February.
I have a friend that works for [unnamed record company] that stated that N'sync broke EVERY record for first week record sales. One would think that the 12-16 year-olds that are the target market for this band would be wired and using napster... savvy enough to get the title on MP3. How does this fit into the equation?
I myself prefer CD or Vinyl to the MP3... I also like liner notes and album art.
I'd be willing to bet that used CD sales hurt the bottom line of the record companies more than MP3.
Yes... but it often seems that his diatribe is full of steam, and he is getting paid by the word to reiterate the a priori. Some of us (I do not speak for all) do prefer the B.K. era of Slashdot (B.K. = Before Katz), when a post was [Summary + Link + Discussion]. Katz should save his skills for book or movie reviews. I do not think that Slashdot needs an editorialist. Wasn't Slashdot quoted as being 'the new journalism'... does this mean that fact-finding and insight comes from its posters? If Katz is staff, let him just post submissions and then contribute some book or movie reviews.
just my $0.02, but may be some of reason for Katz-bashing
Is it really 'piracy' though? That is an awfully strong word. I guess it just depends on who does it, and by what means. If I make you a cassette tape and you listen to it, who is the pirate? If I buy a CD and make MP3s am I a pirate? If I record it from the radio am I breaking the law? Why aren't used CDs illegal (as Garth Brooks was trying the motivate the industry to act upon back in the early 90's)? The rights to Michelangelo's ceiling are owned by somebody (the church?) if I put the image of God's finger pointing at Adam on a T-shirt or a mouse-pad am I pirate? When Andy Warhol made a portrait of Elvis (his image is copyrighted) should the profit from that sale of the prints go to his estate? Music is art and is to some degree released to the public... Music is also a consumer product (like film) and should have laws to protect its creators. I have a friend that works for [an unamed record label]... they are looking at the future to determine if they should join the fight against MP3 or embrace it. He mentioned to me that N'Sync broke EVERY record the first week of their last album release... proof positive. N'Sync fans are connected to the internet by a larger majority than Metallic fans and are the younger and more likely to be digital aware age group (assumption), why did it not affect their sales?
Just because Larry Wall or Linus takes a stand on this doesn't mean Metallica has justice... Larry and Linus are spokespeople and political leaders in the Open Source movement. Since Linux=Free and Napster=Free people are making the connection between the Linux community and MP3 'piracy'. I don't think that they want this comparison while there is controversy.
sarcasm>That's it! Let's all join together... as individuals./sarcasm

Does anyone know of a list of the contents of Ted's 'Love Shack'... I am extremely curious as to what made up his library (any Katz, I wonder at this moment).
You need 'special' tape for this though (presumably to boost philips tape sales).
I used those DVHS tapes before on an Alesis ADat multi track recorder. There are other choises as far as the media is concerned. These tapes are not proprietary. You do not need to buy them from Philips.
This text and Katz's dialog has little to do with scientific discovery. I am not sure if Katz is out of his league in such an issue. I did not know he was a scientist (what the hell is he anyhow? He does not fool me when he tries to pass as a journalist)
If you want to point fingers at what is responsible for the future of science and technology why not blame it on the microprocessor or the laser? The internet is only an application of other technologies.
Science has taken a very dangerous turn in the last two decades. Patent and profit rule over discovery and method. (off topic, but MHO)

I see a pattern.
Look here for more:
They linked to a retro-article of a review of the Sinclair.
I've spent a good number of years on this planet and have arrived at the following realization:
Is there a source for that dialog, or do you fit into cat 3 - 4?
It makes good sense, I was just wondering if it was original... ya know, credit where credit is due.
