I'm more in favor of the Xgl method of modern linux desktop rendering. Currently a lot of work is being done on Xegl. Which is an extension of Xgl with the EGL API. There was a lengthy discussion over Xegl vs KAA on the freedesktop mailing-list. My impression is KAA is good for all basic hardware while Xgl/Xegl takes advantage of modern hardware.
Mathematical theorems are not falsifiable. There are mathematical theorems in QM that will always be true, ie Stone's Theorem and the no cloning theorem.
No you're right in QFT curved spacetimes appear but they make no sense. Hell the path integral method for minkowski space doesn't make sense either. Hence the Wick rotation. The problem that QFT on curved spactimes is paradoxical leads me to the conclusion that GR and QFT share properties that are incompatible.
Falsification for a criterion of a valid theory is shaky at best. What is falsifiable? Surely we can all imagine possible worlds where all laws of physics are false. However can we make sense of world where these laws are false? What if time didn't flow at all? What if entropy decreased? Actually all theories are falsifiable and if there is a theory that isn't we shouldn't ignore it.
When I said "it's actual science and proven" I wasn't talking about if it's falsifiable or not. Also a falsifiable theory doesn't require that one day it will be false. If we are to believe that science is moving towards the truth there will be parts of every theory that has been proven true that which remain the truth.
Also I believe in Feyerabend's counterinductive method. We should be looking for ways to prove a theory false. However we shouldn't actually believe the theory will become false. But rather we will improve the theory.
Yeah the area of QM that quantum computation deals with has no relevenace to GR. However one can not deny QM/QFT as a whole conflicts with GR in some areas. GR for example says mass curves spacetime however the spacetimes we deal with in QM/QFT are flat!
Yeah... quantum was a buzzword in 1905. But now it's actual science and proven. Quantum mechanics and QFT are two of the most successful theories to date. Yes there are conflicts with GR. And yes QM and QFT are most likely incomplete. However for a quantum computer there is no need for a theory that will supersede QM/QFT. The domain for quantum computing is well within the reach of QM itself.
Actually things like superdense coding and quantum teleportation have been verfied in the lab. So this stuff isn't exactly nonsense.
So you're telling me when I buy a CD I'm not really giving the artist money but the record company as a whole. So in reality when I buy an Audioslave album I'm actually supporting all the Sony artists and executives. Thats fucked up. I'm never buying a CD again. I'll just buy a ticket to go see them live. Don't tell me that money doesn't go towards them as well... fuck they have a paypal button somewhere??!
It was finally one of my history teaching majors who pointed out, "Wikis only give a voice to the last person who spoke."
And how is history any different?
Wikis suffer from the same thing all human endeavors suffer from... too much noise in our communication channel. And by noise I mean information loss (yes noise itself is information but if the objective truth is our goal we want a type of modal information) . You try to describe an event to someone and you have to use words. Plus these words are filtered out by personal perception and biases.
The thing that make these faults so glaring on Wikis is the nature of the internet. The internet tends to speed things up. So the faults of history dont become obvious until maybe a lifetime has passed. However with wikis you see these faults in a day or so.
The Anonymous Coward is an important part of Slashdot. It's been around longer then the current ID system. Yes there are abuses but thats why we have the moderation system. It's there for an important reason, if a person wants to remain anonymous they can. Also it allows people to say what they actually feel. Even though we might label a majority of this obscene or crap, it's out there. Yes trolls exist and will continue to exist. But hell trolls are part of life too. At least here we can moderate them down.
It's called magnetic shielding. You figure out how to create a magnetic shield over a certain area. The whole reason the space dust becomes magnetized is the lack of a strong magnetic field on the moon. Magnetic fields are vector fields, create a strong enough magnetic field with an opposite vector field. This will cancel the two fields out.
Do you know what a strawman is? I don't see any strawmen in the GP post. I do however see some in yours. Anyway there should be some sort of law about anyone who pulls out the strawman cliche has already lost the argument.
Anyway the GP is right, Jobs never said anything about Mac OS X running on anything but Apple branded hardware. The only change is Intel will now become part of the Apple line. Also I wouldn't be surprised if in the terms of use included in the new Mac OS X will specifically state that you are not allowed to run this software on non-Apple hardware. This pretty much makes any hacks to get Mac OS X to boot, warez. And any other 3rd party drivers to make Mac OS X actually work on your PC warez too.
Until I hear Jobs come out and say, "Yeah, the new Mac OS X for Intel based processors will be compatible with any Intel based PC", then we should expect Mac OS X to stay with Apple hardware.
First it was all about Linux... now it's all about Apple. First blogs were revolutionary... not their just the mindless rants of emo-kids. What will slashdot turn its collect back on next? Google? NEVER!!!
Yeah apparently the kit is for developing software to work with Apple proprietary hardware.
Anyway what are going to be the terms of license for Mac OS X on intel? Can you only run it on selected Apple hardware under this license? I dunno thats why I'm asking.
to crack hardware while software cracking is just a matter of time. Imagine you could get OS X to boot you still need to write a driver for your video card. Anyone who has used Linux knows how poor the open source drivers are for the latest brand of video cards. Also would these drivers be illegal? Who is going to write them? It's not like cracking a registration code where some college student or amature can use a hex editor. This is some serious stuff.
I'm sure people will be successful in getting OS X to boot on a non-native Apple intel. However what about sound cards, video cards, ethernet, wireless, mouse, etc. And would these attempts at non-native Apple driver production be illegal?
Actually you might have a point. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon did really well, it grossed like 120 million in the US. But again Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon wasn't animation.
How about things like Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Digimon, etc. These are all anime but tremendously popular however they were all Americanized. With Miyazaki you're sort of stuck because the purists want it remain as close to the original. So you're limited in what you can do.
Could you really invest tons of money to market a Miyazaki film? You're really taking a gamble. I'd like to think if Howl's was in a thousand theatres it would do better. But I doubt it, at least in its current form.
I think Americans have been spoiled with movies that have no symbolism and a plot that treats you like a retard. If things aren't spelled out we tend to get angry. We want instant gratification a movie thats flashy and simple. Nothing wrong with that but when a movie comes out thats not like that we shouldn't throw it in the basement and call it a bastard.
Well Howl's Moving Castle has grossed 210 million dollars worldwide. While Spirited Away did immensely better. However Spirited Away I think grossed 10 million dollars in the US and Howl's inital opening in 36 theatres grossed 400k.
So why do these films do so poorly in America? Americans in general have a case of xenophobia. Now imagine if they took's Miyazaki's vision for a movie but had an American write it and also have Americanized animation. I guarantee it would do tremedously well.
Also btw Howl's Moving Castle is orginally a book by a british author Diana Wynne Jones. Apparently she was very pleased with Miyazaki's adaptation.
Yeah the only thing that makes this paper controversial is that used Jews and Intelligence. Also most people would tend to think that the selection of intelligence is a good thing. Its typical media hype, I just read some of the articles and they really sensationalize the whole thing.
I think the argument has little to do with intelligence but intelligence was used because its thought to be a genetic trait.
The argument is that biased selection of genetic traits over time cause genetic based diseases. That perhaps random selection may be better.
Think of it as entropy, when you have a biased selection of genetic traits you close the system or make it more closed. The decrease in energy being allowed into the system increases the entropy. Hence they call their theory the bottleneck theory.
Historical conditions created an environment for the Ashkenazi Jews where a higher IQ meant greater reproductive success. Therefore a high IQ became a dominant genetic trait. So much so that the genes linked to higher intelligence would overlap and therefore cause genetic diseases.
Conclusion: A cultural/historical created selection of a certain genetic trait over others may be a bad thing[tm].

Yeah there exist no experimental magnetic monopoles but there exist several theoretical magnetic monopoles, ie the Dirac monopole.
It's called magnetic shielding. You figure out how to create a magnetic shield over a certain area. Huh What? typical slashdot kneejerk moderation. "My time is worth plenty of money!!!" *click* +1
The cost of your time for building your own computer is
money saved / time to build computer
So if you saved $300 and it took you 3 hours to build your computer thats $100 an hour!

Ashkenazi Jews have these diseases, Ashkenazi Jews are smart, therefore these diseases have intelligence as a byproduct
Thats not what the paper says.. it says the opposite. Please read the paper or check my summary of it a couple posts down.
Historical conditions created an environment for the Ashkenazi Jews where a higher IQ meant greater reproductive success. Therefore a high IQ became a dominant genetic trait. So much so that the genes linked to higher intelligence would overlap and therefore cause genetic diseases.

Really? I never tried actually. Thanks for the info! XD
I second that... I still have the box w/ discs and manual.
