Q:A company is running a modified version of a GPL'ed program on a web site. Does the GPL say they must release their modified sources? A:The GPL permits anyone to make a modified version and use it without ever distributing it to others. What this company is doing is a special case of that. Therefore, the company does not have to release the modified sources.
It is essential for people to have the freedom to make modifications and use them privately, without ever publishing those modifications. However, putting the program on a server machine for the public to talk to is hardly "private" use, so it would be legitimate to require release of the source code in that special case. We are thinking about doing something like this in GPL version 3, but we don't have precise wording in mind yet.
In the mean time, you might want to use the Affero GPL for programs designed for network server use.
Yeah and paying for the war in Iraq, a massive reconstruction project AND tax breaks for the wealthy all on loaned money from foreign countries is good for the economy.
I know this article was most likely posted for anti-MS and anti-offshore hits. Because honestly thats all slashdot is good for nowadays, pissing people off and increasing their page impressions.
Anyway, the people in Asia are just as smart as us and just as educated. Not only that they work harder and for less money. Corporations have no nationalistic goals. As long as the governments in which they base do not hamper their profits they don't care. If the government does somehow infringe on them they either get out of town or make an investment in a new government.
The fact remains in order to compete with Asia we are going to have to work harder, invest more in education and sorry to say this... work for less. It is either that or unionize. Which will never happen.
No, Occam's Razor is still in effect. However the task of taking so much complex information and compressing it into a simple statement is very difficult. Also it takes someone of immense insight and genius to figure out.
has the amount of Google stories posted on Slashdot peaked? Insiders say no and also point out dupes, inflammatory stories and Zonk blogs are also on the rise. CmdrTaco was unavailable for comment. CowboyNeal was quoted as saying, "[CmdrTaco] is laughing all the way to the bank".
Just a couple things I would like to point out. First off PTSD is not always triggered by one traumatic event but also from the day to day stressors of having your life threatened. Some studies have actually stated this is the most frequent cause. Also I would imagine that these stressors have to do with actually believing your life is threatened and not from your body being tricked into thinking that. In other words making loud sounds and playing some video game isn't going to give you PTSD.
However the purpose behind this is for a theraputic effect. I'm not sure how this will work either. PTSD is like brain damage done by intense stress. This is something you basically live with for your entire life. It is not something learned or like a phobia. This is serious mental damage. I just don't see how playing a video game is going to help.
Shutup, you're just pissed cause now the operating system you touted as the greatest thing since sliced bread is just a common whore. You feel robbed and ripped off. Hey man this is reality! Sure paying for stuff is part of reality but so is being ripped off and punched in the stomach.
Wikipedia has bias but what human institution doesn't? At least with Wikipedia we can see it at such a large scale one could actually examine it in great detail ( dissertation perhaps ). Anyway my point is the key is not to eliminate bias ( which might be impossible ) but to recognize it. I think Wikipedia teaches us all that lesson.
In practice this means for OpenGL under Aeroglass:
* OpenGL performance will be significantly reduced - perhaps as much as 50%
* OpenGL on Windows will be stuck at a vanilla version of OpenGL 1.4
* No extensions will be possible to expose future hardware innovations
There are no blocking technical issues to implementing an OpenGL ICD with the full Aeroglass experience on Windows Vista with STABILITY and SECURITY. This is a policy - not a technical decision.
From the article: This information came from the OpenGL BOF held at Siggraph 2005 in LA this last Wednesday evening. This was confirmed at the BOF by NVIDIA, ATI and us (3Dlabs).
As soon as an ICD is loaded the composited desktop is turned off on Windows Vista. If you want the composited desktop Aeroglass experience, you will need to make your application go through Microsoft's OpenGL implementation, which is layered on top of DirectX. As pointed out earlier, this layering can have performance implications. Their implementation supports OpenGL version 1.4 only, without extension support.
We believe it possible to provide an ICD with full composited desktop support while adhering to the stability and security requirements in Windows Vista. But we need Microsoft's help in doing so.
Therefore, as mentioned before, please let your contact in the ISV or IHV or OEM community know how you feel about this and spread the word.
For some more information, you can browse these Microsoft Winhec slides:
Basically the issue is this, you use a non-Windows API and features are disabled. They are not disabled because they lack the functionality but rather because you are using it. In other words Windows loses features because the very fact you are using competing software. The goal is of course to deter people from using competing software and make it appear the software is inferior to MS alternatives. Are you okay with this?
Liberty cannot exist without security. Therefore, this statement makes no sense. Threat of physical harm while performing an activity that one should be free to do, dissuades someone from performing that activity. Therefore, liberty is lost.
This seems to be a new meme that without security freedom cannot exist. I'm not sure what spawned it most likely the ongoing "global struggle against extremism". I guess it depends on your definition of freedom. If you believe freedom is a space that you're allowed to roam guarded by outside powers then yes this kind of freedom by definition requires security. However notice this type of freedom is not much different than the freedom possessed by a sheep. It can roam around in its little pasture protected by the shepherd from wolves. However all your freedom depends on the competency of the shepherd and that the shepherd is an agent of mercy and good will. Basically you remove the responsibility of the entitlement to freedom to someone else. Is that really freedom?
What makes this shuttle mission different is that they now have new views of the space shuttle. So they are equipped to see and fix problem areas they were previously ignorant of. They have landed with dangling gap filler before. However now because of Columbia that are very wary of such things. So this repair is more of a "just in case" scenario rather than "omg the shuttle is going to blow up".
A good recap (RealPlayer) can found from the News Hour on PBS.
this guy's blog is equivalent to those "make money off Ebay" books. Sure he makes tons of money selling his advice on how to make money... which is the only way to make money.
It's funny when an American agenda is backed by the UN it is a "recognized body of the international community" but when it goes against American interests it becomes a "corrupt organization with no right to govern". It's nice to see American unilateralism is alive and well on Slashdot.
In so doing, the suit claims, the law firm violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which prohibits the circumventing of "technological measures" designed to protect copyrighted materials. The suit further contends that among other violations, the firm violated copyright by gathering, storing and transmitting the archived pages as part of the earlier trademark litigation.

"It is designed to let Web site owners communicate their wishes to cooperating robots. Robots can ignore robots.txt."
William F. Patry, an intellectual property lawyer with Thelen Reid & Priest in New York and a former Congressional copyright counsel, said that violations of the copyright act and other statutes would be extremely hard to prove in this case.
Then just knock on the door (if you're the building manager) and demand to see the computer - if the MAC matches, it's over.
I'm sorry but a personal computer is personal property and unless you have a warrant you have no right to look at someone's computer or even demand such a thing. Also a person would be in the right if they replied to such a request with a "Go Fuck Yourself". If you are so worried about people leeching off your WiFi just turn on the encryption. It's a lot easier then busting down doors and acting like a jerk.
I tend to think anything that is creatively inspired is a form of art. This ranges from the sciences and the non-sciences. Beauty is derived from creative inspiration. Some us see beauty in equations and others see it in paintings. The idea that you can create an absolute measure which determines art goes against what being creative is.
can be downloaded here via bittorrent. I think the overall question is whether or not a person can be fired over a philosophical view.
He never said that he is going to pirate software or will help those who do (he removed the torrent tracker from his site in December). However he was served with lawsuit via the MPAA in March. He is going to fight the lawsuit in court. He is fighting the lawsuit on jurisdiction grounds, that the MPAA has no right to sue him. Even though the server was temporarily hosted in California.
Anyway I think his point is that the MPAA is using gestapo tactics in scaring people to settle and he is not going to settle. He'd rather fight this in court. Anyway he does have a case in light of the recent ruling since it only applies to those who promote the trading of illegal material. I think removing the tracker in December is the appropriate action.
heh, the post was to support your comment. maybe i should have said that.

Either you completely trust your government or somewhat trust anonymous sources. I think the latter is more acceptable.
