Word verification has been broken allready, by crosslinking the image to a website.
That way naive users *THINK* they decipher a WV image on the current website, while they infact have done the owner of the website a favor and read the scrambled image from google ,and given the spammer a valueable information.

Often in return for pictures of people with alzheimers that forgot to put clothes on.

I havent heard about it until a few weeks ago either. The "case" has been resting since the 70's -where i was actually busy fighting with my brother about small toys.
I have no clue who is actually entitled to it, im sure there are many opinions about that, but i think most wouldnt give a damn about the island itself - which is more useless than melted snowball, but...
When/if climate changes, the island can become more important, actually the vicinity around it. I have heard oil and fishing industry mentioned too in this context. So i can understand why nobody just wants to let go of it.
Maybe we should split the island like Berlin after WW2.. :)
Or maybe Denmark should just send the entire fleet (both ships) and invade Canada !

However it means that each time you step on a snail from now on, you will have to pick it up, look at the source adress, and send back an icmp code 11,0 (time to live expired in transit).

    Old joke, the ./ way:

German scientists dug 50 meters down and discovered small pieces of copper.
After studying these pieces for a long time, Germany announced that the ancient Germans 15,000 years ago had DSL.

Naturally, the Russian government was not that easily impressed. They ordered their own scientists to dig even deeper.
100 meters down they found small pieces of glass and they soon announced that the ancient Russians 20,000 years ago already had a nation-wide fiber net.

American scientists were outraged by this. They dug 200 meters down & found absolutely nothing.
They happily concluded that the ancient Americans 25,000 years ago had wireless network.

Not to mention various pieces of software that installs on windows machines when you try play a regular audio CD..

Indeed it was, but it sure also had some flaws. Learning by the mistakes of it, and write a smarter anti-virus-virus, im sure you could generally benefit from it. Personally i prefer to see a little log entry in my firewall, than 500 pieces of spam in my inbox. No doubt its an unusual approach, but what other (working) methods do you suggest to wipe out 50 new variants ?

Actually.. i know its been tried before, i think it was code red/nimda ?, where someone made a patch spreading in same manner, but instead it patched the systems.

About time to try that concept again ?
I know its gonna generate some traffic, but 1 new variant amongst 50+ new others isnt much.

    Consider pro/cons

+ you could patch most of the vulnerable systems by including the official M$ patch
+ inform the user that the pc is victim of a virus and lead him/her to a virusscan.
+ remove the original virus, or some of the variants.
+ save bandwidth/spam for each pc fixed [1]

-generate more traffic [1] nothing compared to the current amount of net traffic and spam it generates.
    -would be illegal

Worth to consider imho, if you write it properly and not suffer from same flaws as the codered one did. Im sure you could do far more good than harm .

beagle.sourceforge.net might not be the proper place for it though :)
