In my experience it is MUCH faster - since it is not crashing all the time, bugging you with security alerts etc - and actually lets you get your work done. CPU speed is almost irrelevant these days.
The best piece of code I ever wrote was on a cross country flight. It was an integral piece of the project I was working on, and in a span of about 2 hours I had greater productivity than in most of the rest of the year put together. Of course, that was a long time ago before coach seats got so small that sitting comfortably let alone working became out of the question.
As a fellow old timer who typed quite a few.NOT. and.EQ. back in the day - I don't see what the big deal is either. If you don't like that font, use another one.
Are you forgetting the name of the first space shuttle? There was a write-in campaign for that one too. The winner? "Enterprise". At least NASA back then had the sense to name the test vehicle Enterprise, not the first one to actually fly in space.
never mind the manufacturing capability to build those old Apollo rockets, which no longer exists - steel mills all gone, no forges that large anymore.
you can get food on airplanes? Even the peanuts have stopped. US Air (and others) sell "boxed lunches" but they only bring enough for the first 10 rows or so, after that you are out of luck.
What the article fails to mention (or I'm assuming it fails to mention, since I didn't RTFA) is that coach seats are now so small, there are no room for your knees let alone working on a laptop. Flying is now pure hell for the husky gentlemen, unless I spring for the "Economy Plus" seats (when available) that have the legroom of the old normal coach.
I agree. I'm a Vendor at Microsoft and our deparatment just hired a big group of new programmers and testers. (Yes, MSFT is hiring in some cases). Ages ranged from about 25-60.
Good one. I remember when TNG first came out - I thought it was complete crap, like a Star Trek version of Super Friends where all the characters had super powers (Deanna reading minds, Data super strength, Geordi super vision etc)
Except, the Prius is a nicer car, and has the "cool" factor (at least if you you are into that sort of thing, and especially if you live in Seattle!). A Porche 911 is smaller than a Corola, yet is worth much more than $6000 more than one. The value of a car is not in the price per pound - there are many tangibles (performance, reliability) as well as intangibles (styling) to consider that can make the cost difference worth it.
I think the problem is you are looking on CL. Try contacting the agencies/vendor companies directly, or even http://www.microsoft.com/careers/. Plenty of 6 figure jobs out there, IF you have the right experience.
Probably most of them. And do you know why? No vast conspiracy - its because that's whose applying for the jobs. I've worked in the IT Industry for about 15 years, and almost all of the resumes we've received during periods of hiring have been from people from India. They are not worse or better than any other group - just like European Americans, there are good Indian Developers and bad Indian developers - but if you need to hire, that's pretty much the pool you have to pick from. So to all the people complaining about "foreigners" (many of these folks honestly want to become US Citizens) taking good American jobs - where are you??? Why aren't you applying for the contract positions at Microsoft and elsewhere?
People dont get it because he screwed up the joke - neglected to mention that they went to the side of the bridge to take a piss into the water, not just "towards the middle of the bridge" as of they were pissing in the middle of the road.
mod parent down as troll!

How do we make money? Volume!
So I don't need a graphics card you insensitive clod! (at least other than the built-in one)

That's the only explanation.

It happened to the Seattle P-I for real this year - over 100 years of ink, forced to stop the presses and go to web only.
Only a small fraction of the developers in the US understand English, let alone the world.

They said the same thing about Star Trek.....

Anyone else read the headline and think this was another story about the Volt paycuts at Microsoft? I wondered why GM would defend them!

Certainly not true at Microsoft (from personal experience) - competence is the most important criteria, and the pay is good by any standard.

Thank Goodness I'm a v-, not an a- ! Just hope my management doesn't catch wind of this.

Didn't you read my post? I was only out for 3 days!
so I can pass along my email address and let them know I'm actively looking for work.
