I'm an IT consultant - my contract was terminated early, and I wrote a tasteful goodbye email ("was great working with you all" etc. which happened to be true). Good thing I did - 3 days later more funding came through and I was called back!
Vaporware or not, this is the type of thing the US should still be doing as well - remember the old National Aerospace Plane (NASP) program in the 80s? Kudos to the British for at least attempting to push the frontiers of aerospace science and technology.
Gmail worked fine on IE until - surprise, surprise - they released their Chrome Browser. Suddenly within a week it stopped working under IE (at least my configuration under XP). I'm not normally one to smell conspiracy, but this seems to be too big a coincidence.
Thats why I have 3 browsers (Safari, IE, Firefox, split across my Mac and PC). One browser cannot do it all. Gmail doesnt work properly on IE, my companys web version of outlook doesnt work on Safari, certain sites REQUIRE IE, etc.
I travel a lot, and for the most part there is still no internet in planes - from that point of view online access would be useful (I currently have about 13,000 messages in my Gmail inbox). But the other posters are right - I can download whatever emails I need via pop etc. so I'm not seeing any added benefit.
Go to the Microsoft Careers home page and search for job openings - there are six new openings for TODAY alone - 853 openings altogether. Wonder how many of those will eventually be closed?
Why would we do that to ourselves? Rent..Food...Beer... the usual reasons. Oh, find another job that pays half as well with less hours? In todays economy? Good luck with that.
You obviously do not work at Microsoft, where (depending on your department) 40 hours means you just finished Tuesday. Point is, larger company does not always translate into longer hours (and vice-versa) - it depends on the corporate culture.

you never used DOS 6.2??
Hmmm according to Putin, the gold standard for programmers is India, and they are not even on the list!

The poster probably means for US Citizens - you are probably from a UK commonwealth country.
No kidding. But everyone is entitled to be young and stupid once.
512K Fat Mac in Grad School - our lab bought a couple of these when they came out
Mac LC - my first Mac. Cashed in my 401k and bought it, a color monitor, and printer for about $6,000
Mac Centris 660 AV - Two processors, and speech recognition! Sort of.
iBook G4 - needed something to sync with my iTunes, and my PC just wasn't cutting it.
And now....Shiny new iMac used mostly to run World of Warcraft
Huh? I work at Microsoft (as a vendor) and have yet to meet a Romanian. Now Hindi as a second language, that's another story.
So..you just assumed you'd be in the bottom 5%? Sounds like a confidence issue....
One other advantage of the 10% cut pioneered by GE - fear. Fear will keep the local employees in line. Fear of this battle station.

So... you don't remember the 90s when Steve Jobs was not with Apple, and the company almost went bankrupt?
As a cancer survivor who was told I had 3-5 years to live 6 years ago (and am doing fine) - you never know.
No disrespect intended.. but I didn't know he was still alive!
AIDS = Apple is doomed, surely.
Don't you mean, now we have to find someone willing to live off of silkworms?
Why would we do that to ourselves? Rent..Food...Beer... the usual reasons. Oh, find another job that pays half as well with less hours? In todays economy? Good luck with that.
Go through the list - most of the companies they say they expect WILL survive.
you mean like Bill Gates?
You are right - they hardly make any money at all ;-)
