All the Blockbuster video stores in my area went bankrupt a couple of years ago and closed. Since they already drove all the mom and pop video stores out of business, that leaves nowhere to rent vidoes anymore.
One "advantage" of living in a depressed post-industrial area of the country - we are ahead of the curve in terms of business that will eventually no longer exist closing before everyone else. We lost our last CD stores years ago, and the one downtown bookstore closed just this year. Yippee.
I would argue that no one understands rap music either.
But more to the point, everything we do today, for the most part, has an analog to what was done 50 or 100 years ago. Records/CDs/Mp3s? Just a fancy phonograph. Computers? Fancy typewriters. Cars? Had em. Flying Macines? Since 1903. Mobile Phones? Just like a Bell Telephone, but with fewer wires. Sure, people of that era would not understand right away the nuances of these technologies, but it wouldnt necessarily appear magical.
And, they were pretty much necessary back in the day, since many telephones were hard wired into the back of the phone and/or the wall, and the handset was hardwired to the base (no modular jacks like we take for granted today). The first time I had a non-accoustic coupler modem, I had to buy a new phone as well.
I remember when blazing fast 1200 baud modems came out, and I replaced my 300 baud modem. The text (there were no graphics to be concerned about) would scroll by so fast that I couldnt read it. I figured there was really no need for faster modems than 300 baud, because I couldnt read faster than 300 baud anyway. Guess thats my version of the "No one needs more than 640K Memory" quote.
Hey, I grew up listening to records, playing board games, and typing papers on typewriters. Not to mention not having mobile phones. Yet somehow we survived....
Also, I find it interesting that he uses his mobile phone seemingly primarily for "texting". Silly me, I just use mine for phone calls. I think that is a generational thing as well - I don't even know anyone who uses text messages on their cell phones that I would sent text messages to and have confidence that they would see them.
I love my Mac, but several times a day the Safari web browser crashes (Sorry, "Closes Unexpectedly") for no reason. This is especially frustrating when I go back and click on the exact same link or attempt to do the same action (watch a youtube video, etc) and the browser crashes again in the same way.
No, it wasnt the president (this time). It was from a VH1 Show on the "Top 40 dumbest celebrity quotes of all time" that I happened to watch this weeknd when I was really REALLY bored. I think it was Paris Hilton, Tara Reid, or Brittney Spears.
Ummm I dont think this would work in the US, where (considering our educational system) some people might answer "yes". In fact, some celebrity (I forget which) recently thought that Japan was a country in Africa, which is why Africa has the best sushi.
The real WTF is...even if he could read the agreement, what if he didn't agree with it and selected "No". Then he wouldnt be able to use the computer at all, therefore the agreement and the perception of choice is meaningless - you are forced to agree with it.
Actually, we DIDNT choose Bush as president (at least in the popular vote) and yet, there he is. That is the REAL WTF.
I miss the days when the US was a democracy (or at least a democratic republic) and not a quasi-dictatorship. In fact Homeland Security is probably monitoring this post right now.
Don't judge all of the USA based on the posters comments. Clearly, he is a freak. I live in the USA and I have never known of a guy to sit down to piss.
The local paper here invited readers to submit their memories of Star Wars first appearing in theatres; one of the comments is mine (but I won't tell you which!)
Frankly, I'm surprised I wasn't modded "Troll". Not that this doesn't go on, however. I remember a small software company where I worked always had good looking receptionists. All of the male programmers would spend time flirting with her all day, until a new executive decision was made - no more female receptionists under 50 years of age. After that, productivity soared.
The problem is not what the recruiters are pitching, it is the recruiters themselves. In most if not all IT-centric organizations that I have worked in, recruiters are young, good looking woman. This is entirely intentional, as a means to attract the young, generally not so good looking geek guys. Often the HR department of a Software company is the only department with a signficant number of females. Perhaps a few young hot guys in HR would help attract more women to IT.
Mod parent up as insightful!
close....Pittsburgh.

Ummm, yeah. That's not what they tought in Aerospace Engineering School.

I AM an American, and I have to say that Moores movie swayed more voters away from Bush than towards - but alas, in the end it was not enough.

I'm was a Kermit man myself.

Anyone out there still use Delphi? Does it even exist anymore? I'm a bit nostalgic for it - that was my first professional programming gig.
