I know the NYT is into everything, but as a writer, it bothers me that one of the nations premiere papers are moving significantly away from their base operation. Printing news is not simply disseminating facts.

The New York Times has been in other things besides its base operation for decades. It already has a medium-sized group of broadcasting (TV and radio) stations, and I think it had some investments in cable or TV production houses at one time.

Expanding its internet presence would seem to be the logical next step for a media company, and one that just about every other large newspaper has already taken. Think about the Chicago Tribune, and all of its TV, radio, internet, and other properties (like KTLA, the WB network, Superstation WGN, CareerBuilder.com, Tribune Studios, etc...) You don't want to have all of your eggs in one basket. What if one day we find out that newspaper ink causes cancer?

Free of charge? What planet do you live on where textbooks grow on trees? Here in America, parents pay thousands and thousands of dollars in property taxes to support their local public schools. They also pay federal taxes to pay for other people's public schools. I imagine it's similar in other countries, because I haven't heard of any place where money is free. Money doesn't magically appear in government treasuries. It comes out of the taxpayers -- and one way or another from your wallet.

People who know more about satellites than just Dish Network understand that this sort of configuration isn't all that rare.

I once saw an animation that showed the Sirius satellites' orbits and what territory they could cover. It appeared from the display that you could use your radio anywhere from the North Pole to Brazil. I know a guy pretty far north in Canada who uses a Sirius radio from the states, and has the account billed to a friend who he pays each month. I'm not sure what the XM footprints are, but I don't think you'd get as big a sweep from two birds in geostationary. I could be very wrong, however.

In fact, the reception is so good that I actualy have my antenna wadded up in a bundle of wires behind my stereo nowhere near the window, and I still get three out of three bars. I bet those people in the Amazon.com reviews who are complaining about the bad reception they get from their XM MyFi's probably live in the hinterland, as well.

I did 18 months in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and another year in Green Bay. Now that I live in the city, I really understand why people live in the city. Improved radio reception is one of those many benefits.

My company (which will remain nameless) has its own section of the Apple Store online where employees get discounts on personal purchases. And if I can't wait 1-3 days for free shipping, I can always go into a local Apple store and flash my employee ID and get the discount. (I do this all the time now, even for small purchases just to see what the discount is).

The reason I bring this up is that it's often not well publicised within companies. I dropped $4,000 on my 17" Powerbook and accompanying software. Three months later I was transfered to another office in another state where they were more with-it and knew about the discount, but it was too late for me.
