We need to license masturbation, sex or other forms of pleasure to a common equilization account which would them be distributed amungst porn producers. These artists work long and hard to make ends meet and shouldn't be left out if we find their methods enjoyable; they surly then deserve a monetary renumeration. For one, would defintly like to compensate the one who taught me how to have a girl scream 'stick it in me again you cock studded cowboy', when I touch her elbow.
It's all because Puffy's got the big guns, didn't you know? a true Playa.

(why am I explaining this to fellow techies...?:-)
Why am I explaing this? As aforementioned, they want you to buy a CD to support the project. Bandwidth, Power, Servers, Hardware all require those wonderful green pieces of paper we call money. That said, the *ISOs* are, I believe, the only thing 'copyright', or similar. That said, the OS for every operating system is available off the FTP and is it really that hard for someone either burn it to CD or make a floppy to install from FTP? Obviously it must be, so here is the extremly difficult procedure: 1) Download your OS Distro (/pub/OpenBSD/38/i386) 2) Burn a BootCD, using 'floppy38.fs' as the boot image
I'm not really flailing in either direction on the 'pro' or 'serious' stances which you are attemptint to allude to, but similarly to winning a gold in the olympics, is it just a game?
Which is alot more than can be said about running through some imaginary terrain and shooting virtually everything.
But for the most part; contests / events like this can grant fablous employment opportunities aswell (ie: Olympic Athelets on that box of wheaties).
the better you are, the more you can gain.
whether it be prize money
a rare/unique employment opportunity
free beers
it can just as easily be a hardware version of msn messenger, say like a web cam... but it looks like a phone.
say it's fancy with a little lcd panel that would... say, show you your icq/msn/aim/yim/etc contact list, which you simply click on - and it connects you to them, establishing what we, in last century terms, have referred to as being a telephone call.
Telus (Phones) offeres TV over DSL.
Shaw (TV) offers Phone over Cable.
Why do you park on driveways
and drive on parkways?
... VoIP phones exist and are growing in number, but still currently any institution that uses them routes them to a phone company, paying phone company dues. Soon (if not already) there will be a 'telephone plugin' for your favorite chat app and you connect a, say, usb phone to your computer and use as normal.
sms messages to the home phone, now you no longer need to waste time picking up voice mail. yada yada.
many a debate has been seen on/. regarding "wireless meshing" (each phone is a wifi node/ap, strengthens devices in its proximity, etc). where there's a will, there is a way.
AAah, yes.. I recall playing blackjack (or was it poker)? with the promise that if I won the contents of my FAT table would stay intact. Needless to say, I lost, never knew whether brushing up on my gambling skills would have helped and now everything in/out of my network(s)gets filtered.
Out of that set of people that know you can get SP2 mailed to you for free, come these other barriers:
- time & desire to scour MS's site
- distrust of MS (entering in a mailing address)
- knowledge or care that SP2 is a critical update
- desire to wait the 4-6 weeks for delivery
- Knowledge of what to do when the CD comes ...etc
simply put, most of the people don't care, want to care, or see a need to care.
Microsoft has, for "free", what's known as SUS, software update service - it's basically a locally resident version of windows update. I've started playing with it a little while ago and it seems to delvier updates efficently and quite well. There have been rumors that I've read which state that an admin can use SUS to actually *push* windows updates to clients. Does anyone know if this is true?
However I may actually HATE SP2 for XP, I must say that I really really like the automatic updates running behind the users back. 9 out of 10 of these users simply don't care about anything as long as "i just want it to work", too bad I'm not their computers babysitter and have started to refuse to fix personal computers/notebooks on company time. I present them with a bill and so far most of them have learnt to keep their systems somewhat clean... the others that don't care go to someone else to clean up their diseased machines.
Also Killing any network port if it's found to be a nusiance seems to get their attention.
or simply modify pf.conf to block those IPs. I've gone through and blocked 90% of ad sites via Squid, and modified my pf.conf to include a table of banned ip's. when a worm or certain advisory comes out i simply block that subnet. This is kind of a hacked way of doing things but when you manage the is/it for a company which sees about 20 new notebooks plugging into the network ("oh, they are clients, they NEED to have access immediatly..."). OpenBSD at the gateway & TrendMicro scanning mail & desktops have kept this corp. virus/worm free since the times of nimbda.
The next thing we will see is US tanks rolling into our streets becuase the we will decriminalize marijuana. Hell, why don't they just roll in because we say sod-a pop instead of sod-e pop.
North America is Dying, Slowly.
Wow. I think that was the most objective, rational, and valid post I have read on/. in quite a while. Very many good points were made without the flailing of vulgarities, emotions or other such useless drivel!
well, in order to sell it on ebay you'll need to provide some information. particularly if you want to "have enough money to buy hundreds of versions in a week".
So saying like "Recalled Copy of OSX 10.4 Tiger, unsupported by apple" is really not going to accomplish this.
I recall seeing Tiger all over the torrents, so why would anyone want to pay for an unsupported version when they can get it for free??

Or "metro", a realitiy seriese to see who can withstand on riding this new metro, 'the longest'.
common, they do that at the calgary stampede each year.. "be the longest to ride the ferris wheel and win 10,000", the stampede goes on for about 2 weeks.
and yes, in july - it can be hot in canada!
overzealous cops have a new feeding ground. yay!
OMFG He's got a notebook on the train, get him! he's a terrorist!
yay nyc has is moving to the new millenia.
You know, I really wouldn't be that worried if... Osama bin Laden... himself... was sitting at my computer.
Tell ya what, Mr bin Laden and Mr Saddam can have a field day 'hackin'... i'll even tell them they can 'type startx' to make things look prettier.
what? you're not allowed to have encrypted data, or secure storage, don't you know that?! Just go back to watching sports.
Quick, better stop thinking before the feds catch you.
I am not one who would enjoy open source genetics. Granted the potential learning curve for all those with interest but what about those with interest to harm? Punishing a pc virus/worm writer is one thing - but what about another virus write who happened to re-release the Bubonic plague or some other serious virus leading towards epidemic.
With an open source human genome this may add to more disaster if it's modified to attack something specific?... Perhaps, say race?! There are a lot of organizations with fair chunks of flow that, if they determined could release a bacterium, virus or bacteriophage resulting in the genocide of a populace. Yes It's hard to believe, but well, the human 'source code' is a lot more intricate than something on your average PC (read: more options of control and specificity).
This is just the terror stepping stone, how much 'good' will come out of open source genetics? how much 'bad'?
That said, I, personally am one for OpenSource EVERYTHING. If that causes us, as a species, to erradicate ourselves then so be it; it just shows that we're too stupid to continue our existance.
Probally said a million times alraedy; BSD 3.3 w. pf. pf.conf is infinitly configurable; I have my office network [~150 ppl] running on a PII-266/96MB. It just sits there and humms along; heh. I bet that this could easily handle hunderds of connections - they are only packets:)

This is a fantastic piece on our [my] favorite OS. How-to's can be taken both ways, piracy or not - this is a fanstastic tutorial.
