forget the fancies, i want to code

The Bionic Office
·
· Score: 1
In some environments there are a great deal of distractions, from the coffee machine to co-workers that just want to stop by and chat, things that hurt the progress of software development. Some distractions are okay - its good to be able to get up and walk around - but it'd be nice simply to have a door that I can close on distractions and co-workers so I can get to work; I could careless about fancy displays, etc.
why don't they just stop downloading the songs?

RIAA Bits
·
· Score: 1, Insightful
In my opinion, the RIAA has every right in the world to see that their material is not passed around illicitly and quite frankly I don't see why anyone has a problem with what they're doing.
Take a hint: pop music sucks. Go on with your lives and stop listening to it so much.
Maybe they should hire Paul ?

Beatles Bite Apple
·
· Score: 3, Insightful
You know what would be neat is if the two companies merged on this issue and Apple Computer and Apple Corps worked together to provide songs to the public as this is the sort of thing that John, Paul, George and Ringo envisioned when they started Apple Corps.
How could anyone say the above drivel is informative?
For your information, the Guttenberg Bible is a masterpiece that helped usher in not only the renaissance but also the reformation. The GB and the printing press also aided civilization tremendously by helping spread knowledge throughout the globe in a quick and timely manner.
Of course it is true that the Guttenberg Bible does not make a good study text; that goes without saying. For one thing, its in a museum and for another thing the photographs provided by the HRC are not detailed enough to make out the text clearly.
First IBM doesn't bat an eyelash over SCO's threats, then SCO offers some kind of deal to Linux users so SCO won't sue them, and now IBM is steamrolling over them.
Ads are okay when they don't jump in the way and Google understands this, thus their advertising business model is not only sound but attractive both to the consumer and supplier.
Yahoo!, on the other hand, is trying to reap way too much of a profit. I'm confronted very ofter with large ads or a page of an ad before moving on to the main content. I used to like Yahoo! but now its such a hassle.
We do need to keep in mind that outsourcing to other nations provides them jobs, most likely better incomes and a better future outlook. While I am sure that at a gut level this isn't very popular, at our heart level it is a good thing. What makes an Indian so different from an American? Both probably want to make a decent wage, go to work, etc.

Working Hard?
·
· Score: 1
Sadly, I was given a programming job at a place in which my supervisor was involved in a scheme to defraud others and many of my co-workers were involved in it as well. When a co-worker of mine tried to blow the whistle, they ran him out and then ran me out as well. They still have their jobs but I'm unemployed.
SCO's "protest" images were not in good taste; portraying Torvalds as a puppet of IBM is a pretty cruel thing to do; equating hard work banging out code with piracy is a pretty cruel thing to do.
If I want to do this (write a gpl version of digdug) where should I begin to look? I mean, has anyone else thought of this and if so what resources are available?
This may sound a bit silly, but as I was reading the replies to this article, I began to wonder if the state of the art of programming has matured to the point that a video game framework has been implemented such that writitg a game, or an extremely similar game, such as Dig Dig or Donkey Kong is not that difficult.
If there is some kind of virtual-machine game program with a development platform and a good framework, perhaps an extremely-similar but GPL'd version of these classic arcade games are within the reach of a decent coder.
What is preventing some rock band (or whatever) from selling their own songs off of their own website? That is, just go direct to the audience and they'll receive most of the profits.

but i rarely listen to music other than the radio so i don't consider it worth $29.99/month.
The Tanenbaum-Torvalds Debate
Why is it these awful proprietary formats are used so often?

Slashdot has little to do with the defacement. Slashdot is simply reporting this.
Here are some images at IBM of tiny drawings.

and besides that those artists expect to make a profit from their songs. Why not just go to a different artist or record off of the radio?

I put that book on my amazon.com wishlist!!!!

The so-called "mental illnesses" are not, I repeat, not the result of chemical imbalances. They are the manifestation of a deeper, spiritual issue.
It is a sham.
