I can't think of anyone, or any organisation that doesn't care about price-performance. I positive that if a solution that offered the same performance came around at 1/3 the cost, you'd be willing to take the cheaper of the two. And if you're serious about getting it done now, just buy 3 times the stuff.
I think the Itanium line is interesting, and provides decent performance, but the cost, heat and energy consumptions make it a bear to work with.
i'd be interested in seeing how much they paid for each one of those servers and compare it to Big Mac. You might very well be able to buy 2 big mac's for the price their monster. Which for those ppl counting, would be twice the performance.
Yah, cause it's so hard to click a real microsoft app, press cmd+i and click on a real ms icon and click cmd+c. Gee, i can make every applescript i have look like microsoft word using MS's own icon.
Well, i made the switch to Fedora Core 1, and for what i do i notice no change. Of course i don't even run a GUI, or X, but it does everything i need. I don't ask much out of a server, but i've gotten better performance out of the mandrake ADVX server.
I'm still looking for a good high performance web/mail/ftp server distro, but nothing has been outstanding thus far. I like the mandrake distro, as i started with it, and i like the ADVX and most of the collections of packages.
Looking for some good server management, but i'll probably just use webmin like everyone else. I know i should be using bsd, but last time i tried that it was such a PITA that i went to redhat.
well, while the new refriderants like 404 and 134a are more environmentally friends, the old refridgerants, R12, R22, R502 and such which were cfcs, were not harmful to humans, except in quantities approaching 100% (suffication).
"WITH AMMONIA YOU GET A CHANCE TO RUN" I say BS. With ammonia, the first breath you take burns the lining of your lungs, and if your eyes are open, them too. So with one breath of ammonia, you are most likely unable to run, barely able to breath, blind and probably on the floor.
I think ammonia is a good idea, as in it has good cooling properties, but if we're talking about environmentally friendly, a substance that harms and kills most of the mammals on earth probably wouldn't be much of a upgrade.
And tell me, what do you tell the technicians who have to repair and maintain that equipment who may have to breathe in small amounts of ammonia all day, every day. I think not.
If you can tax free software, can you tax me for running a blog where i give out free info? What about chat forums where IT professionals give out technical support for free, should we tax that? What about a great patent idea that someone gives away for free, are you gonna tax that? When someone develops cold fusion, i'd appreciate it if i didn't have to pay through the nose for it. And we'll have to tax ppl for borrowing books from the library. See where this goes...
Whether this is a hoax or not, taxing "free" software is a bad idea. I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for. I paid for linux with hours of cursing and frustration the first half-a-dozen times i tried it. I paid for linux by figuring it out when we didn't have those nice GUI installers and making it recognise a network card when that took hours.
The world needs to wake up and figure out that everything's changed and that it needs to figure out how we all might have to re-adjust what we think in order for us to move on. What amazes me, is that M$ has all this money, yet they can't seem to compete with "free" software. You'd think with all that money their product would be better.
I propose throwing your MS boxes in the nearest body of water, and relive the boston tea party.
Now while i don't work in the corporate scene, my experience with them shows me why they choose windows. Corporations don't really care about saving money, they care about making it look like they're saving money.
A recent engineering department of a corporation cost reduced a a bearing, that will save them $6 on every $30 bearing. While this sounds like a good idea, the new bearing fails about 3 times under the warrenty period while the old bearing lived well beyond the warrenty period.
Corporations wouldn't care if it costs $1000 per machine to set up and maintain for the first year, as long as they can say they're buying a $600 dell and saving a fortune.
I truely believe that macs have a lower TCO, as i support all the windoze machines in my house. The only work my mac requires is the occasional software update. Windows requires updates weekly, reinstallation every 6-12months with heavy use. And i'm probably going to have to reinstall my mothers copy of XP home and my dads XP pro, as both are becoming incredibly glitch in recent weeks.
Linux probably beats windows in the long term, but loses in the short term, which is the only place where businesses care about. Linux takes longer to install, setup and get running smoothly, especially in a custom environment.
Mac are far more universal, as you can run X11, OS9, windows via VPC in addition to the Native OS X apps. This does not mean that Macs do not have their downfalls. Internet browsing still lacks the 'snap' that IE has on Win2k. But as i don't see MS doing much to innovate their os, i will stick with mac.
Personally, when i have to use windows, i use Win2k as i find it much better in the long term for stability. But unless i have to use windows, i keep linux and os x running on everything i can, as my time is worth more to me than a few hundred dollars now.
I am almost ashamed to call myself an iPod user. First there was yelling about how the older iPods didn't get the features from software v3.x. Boo Hoo Hoo.
Now they're complaining that the battery doesn't last forever. I find it amazing that after Li-ION batteries have been out for years that people don't understand that these things don't last forever.
When i purchased my Powerbook G4, i was told by the reseller that i would go through about a battery every year. I opted for the Applecare and they have given me a new battery every year. My first battery dropped to about 50% life after a year and now i'm on number 2. While this isn't great, it's certainly better than my fathers Dell laptop that has about 20mins of life after about 1 year. For those of you who don't understand why Apple will not repair things like powersupplies, it's because it would cost more to fix one, than buying a new one.
As for batteries, has anyone looked the market full of portable electronics lately. A large share of PDAs do not have replacable batteries. Once your Clio battery dies, you have a $200 paperweight.
Unfortunately, i have yet to find a battery that lasts forever. You have to change the battery in your car every 3-5 years, and it's only really used to start the car. PDA, Laptops, Cellphones, none of these devices have batteries that last more than a couple years, yet it is the iPod that gets complained about.
People need to realize that every device has a "cost of ownership." With most devices this consists of purchase cost, maintanence costs, repair costs and so on. Having a battery fail in a device after 18 months is not out of the ordinary, especially with heavy use. You have to change the oil in your car, rotate the tires, and tune it up every 60,000 miles, yet none of these things anger people as much as the battery failing in the ipod.
Just sit down, shut up, and stop blaming Apple for the simple fact that their hardware makes it through the warrenty period without issue.
I saw this corrupted netinfo database problem right after installing jaguar the day it came out. i don't think the problem persisted past 10.2.2
As for LDAP, i think it is probably more used and thus there is more literature on it's setup and use. I think it is probably ahead of Netinfo for the majority of users and will likely stay there in the near future.
I do see some excellent potential in Netinfo, as i am one of those freaks who tweaks netinfo to get it to do things it was never intended for. I manage Several OSX servers from home without issue.
To me, this (Panther) is the first version of mac OS X to rival the OS9 operating system. To be honest, MacOS lost some features in the transition to OSX. While a lot of these features i don't use (such as labels) i know a lot of long time mac users who cannot live without them.
Now we can all enjoy these features again, as they are back. Anytime apple changes the look/feel/functionality of their OS, people throw a fit. My opinion is that Panther is by far the best OS that mac has ever had. I have already adjusted to the new finder and the rest of the changes. I'm reccomending that everyone with a recent system upgrade.
I know this won't be of much help, but i've seen countless problems that can cause these issues (in both Macs and PCs).
My own PC did this very thing to me about a month ago....changing the power supply fixed it right up. I've also seen a mac with a bad mobo that exhibited the same problem.
As for other causes, i've seen bad bios chips, shorted wires, swelled mobo capacitors and bad house outlets or power cables.
In short, take it somewhere. Either and applestore, or an authorized service center (i'm lucky to have one about 4 blocks away). Power probs are some of the hardest to track down due to the wide range of problems that can cause it.
Good luck
First, this is way off the topic of 10.2.8
Did you even READ the instructions? I put an airport card in my PBG4 Ti 667 and it was a breeze. Yes, you have to open the case. OMG, 7 screws...
You shouldn't have to cut, trim, shave or even bend a single component to get the card in. Yes, you have to remove some components, but nothing that is actually screwed in.
As for PC using easily accessable slots...Who wants their airport card sticking out the side of their laptop? I sure don't. My airport card is active 24-7 and i don't have to worry about bringing it with me.
I find it funny how your inability to put in an Airport card is enough for you to reccomend someone to give up a whole platform. As for the $20 to install an Airport card, i'm sure if you took up a collection on/. you'd raise more than enough money for the installation just on the premise of you keeping your mouth shut.
just for clarification, my cat does fetch. Ok, he'll only fetch his rubber "squeaky" fish, and only when i throw it down the stairs, but he does fetch it.
'my cat cand beat up your cat"
There are doubts in my mind that Apple will use the WWDC as a launching pad for the new 970s. I do belive that Apple is currently in production of 970 machines, and plans to release them alongside Panther, whenever it releases...probably August. After all, why release an OS that's 64 bit if you don't have hardware to run 64 bit. The rest of the computer world is waiting for a viable 64 bit desktop system....there are other 64 bit processors out there.....
I do belive that Apple will have some sort of 970 based machine for the developers to look at, as well as some benchmarks for us all to drool over.
So what can we expect? Previewing Panther on a 970 based system, probably an update to the developer software (64 bit Project Builder), benchmarks of the 970, overview of 970 based hardware. Probably annouce a PPC 970 based Powerbook in the near future...END OF YEAR? Possibly a Naming change to hardware lineup, and Adjustable Displays
What is less likely? Windows verison of iTunes, PPC 970s shipping, PPC 970 Powerbooks shipping, iCam,
What is NOT going to happen? Apple PDA, Apple Cell phone,
As for the whole product line being revamped, i don't think we'll see a whole new product line at WWDC, but i think that Apple is going to be moving all it's lines away from the G4/G3 based systems. I don't even see the iBooks being converted to G4 systems, as IBM's chip lineup is known to be 20-30% cheaper than Motorola's line...
Instead of seeing G4s as the low end chips, i'd probably wager that IBMs will develop a PPC off of the 750 chip and this will probably replace the G3 systems. But i wouldn't expect to see a PPC 750 until you see a 980 in a powermac.... I think if Apple is going to IBM processors, it would be prudent that they went to an all IBM chip lineup.
Personally, there are a lot in the PC community who are crying "FOUL"
I personally believe that the 970/980 will bring Apple back to the fastest computer title, and PC users don't like the fact that they're using a server processor to do it. I personally think it's great!
Yeah, it's a rumor, but this is a pretty substatiated rumor, that i think we can all agree is happening. One thing still in dispute, is if the new processor is gonna be called a G5 or not. I'm sure Apple wants to get away from the image that the motorola processor havee generated over the last few years.
I would expect to see the PPC 970 at WWDC, or shortly after, i.e. August. As for USB 2, it's coming. Apple has already started using USB 2 cards in its powermac lineup (just not supported by the OS).
As for apple trying to catch up in the Mhz race, i don't see this. IBM is the one who's set the Mhz of the 970. I also agree with many rumor sites, stating that the 970 will not be any more expensive that the current G4 lineup. Apple is the only company getting anything based off the G4 motorola line, but IBM currently builds the 970 for it's own blade servers, thus they don't have to gear up just to make chips for apple.
Yeah, the P4 is up over 3Ghz, but looking back, crays are still uber fast, and they don't run ungodly mhz......
Also, i wouldn't count on Apple calling it a G5, as apple might go back to calling their chips by their developed name...ie-970
As for 10.3 and the 64-bit stuff, the 64 bit only comes into play when you start getting 64 bit software to run on the machine, that's why Panther is so big, it'll be a 64 bit OS. Also expect a 64-bit version of Project Builder to help move to 64-bit apps.
AMD is not the founder of hypertransport...They are part of a group who's developing it, and one of the last members to join if i recall...... And I don't think that the transition of an AMD chip is much more complicated than you make it out to be....
Personally, if the idea of a 970 makes your blood boil, wait until WWDC and make an informed choice...if you can't wait to buy a mac, but it now.....
How cany anyone say that the 970 is behind AMD/Intel? Last time i looked, IBMs own 970 is FASTER than the new opterons, aren't those supposed to be fast?
Sorry for the sarcasm, but i find that PC users bash what they don't understand. Apple is heavily imitated by the PC world, so the must be doing something right. Let's just all watch and see what happens at WWDC, and talk about it later.
Gossiping about new Mac Hardware......$Free

HAHA, my mom just bought a new Asus board and a 2500+ Barton and some ram from crucial.com to replace her AMD K6-3 400. Oh the irony
I don't know where you ppl keep your data, but it took way more than 10 seconds to smoke my ~120gig home folder
