    the reason was given on the webpage... I notice you left that little bit off. Basically, blame Microsoft for windows not being able to run on it. "Furthermore, a port of Windows would be encumbered by licensing issues"

    they don't up the price, they just reduce the money HP get as market development funding from Microsoft.

    I'd like to know how they deal with updates - new versions, patches. The big OSS projects all have their fair share of vulnerabilities and need constant patching.

    For the less technically oriented end-user, to whom I assume these boxes are pitched, some form of automatic download + patch would be a must.

    Can't find anything on lulu.com that talks about this - without it, the product is going to be dangerous (unpatched vulns galore)

    just like buying any other "boxed" software then isn't it...

    the bittorrent progam may be open source, but that can't prevent them from producing their own closed source client program to implement the protocol now can it... Interoperability works both ways.

    Those who want access to legitimate content only available via that channel, or else those who have had the MS BT client foisted upon them as the bundled client and don't know or don't care that there are other clients... kind of like how so many continue to use outlook express or internet explorer despite so many excellent packages being available out there. There's a just about useable ms client and putting a real client on is just too much effort...

    HP would have to do what Linspire and TurboLinux have done... license the codecs from Microsoft. It would probably cost them as much per machine as it does anyway to get them bundled in with the Media Edition of the Embedded Windows product anyway.

    Expect to see Microsoft's own proprietary, Media company friendly, extension to Bittorrent to be included with next update to IE or MP... they want to control the traffic... to just those torrents officially published by the Media companies with access to them paid for and fully DRM'd...

    apparently, if you already have version 7, then it installs as an upgrade. But I'm not sure if version 7 ever came out for Linux and I never got v7 for PC anyway so I can't try this.

    I only get 16K/s upstream max with my provider... I choke the torrents to 10K/s up total. I have found that having unlimited downstream torrents seriously affects my other stuff as usenet downloads have problems as well as loading in pages from the web... My daughter also complains that listening to web based radio gets messed up unless I throttle things down. Cutting down the maximum number of connections per torrent to 50 speeds things up as well.

    that's what I'm waiting to find out... I won't know until I unpack the package... about an hour and a half at my max download rate... I've limited Azureus download rate to 40K/s deliberately so that ordinary web use isn't affected...

    even their home page fails to give any clues to what they actually do... No mention that they produce a Linux distribution at all... just vague references to something called "SME Server" and something called "Desktop/LX". If you were just browsing around and happened up their homepage, you'd be forgiven for thinking that they had something to do with greenhouses... No wonder people are confused, the company itself is a bit confused as well.

    Not to be too curmudgeonly towards your kind offer, but I would much rather that the Thunderbird team themselves provided an "official" MSI package for download from their site along with md5 sums and a signature to check it against.

    What anti-social motivation... the only motivation they have is to make money... Spamming is seen as an easy way to make money. No hard manual labour required, you work your own hours, and it pays better than working at McDs or Walmart... The only penalties that can be applied are Fines combined with Injunctions against spamming (you can't take away the computer as there are perfectly legal reasons for them to possess one), and for repeat offenders, ie. they've breached the injunction, Jail. You have to make them pursue a legitimate method of making money... unfortunately, for most of them, the only legitimate ways of making money are dead-end, minimum wage jobs.

    pah... when I were a lad building my first machine... I had to gang nine 1Kbit chips together to make 1 Kbyte + parity... aye, they were the days... and you could cram a full chess playing program into that 1 Kbyte as well. A 4K ram expansion cost an arm and a leg... well it felt like that having to give up beer and ciggies for ages to scrape up the wonga...

    Sure, it would cannibalize some of their Mac and Windows market,

    How so... a sale's a sale, no matter what platform it's on... They don't have to make it open source at all, just as long as they're careful about how they use existing libraries. Anyroad... Photoshop works with WINE, just not the latest version of photoshop though...

    Basically, you need .m3u (audio/x-mpegurl) mapped to a player that can handle Ogg, most often Winamp

    Expect to see an "update" or "security fix" for Media Player that messes with the association to always make it point to WMP whenever you start windows or log in...
