    When you consider that the alternative in 1983 for me cost several thousand dollars??? IMB PCs and clones cost a real packet back in those days. In the UK, it was not until Alan Sugar launched his Amstrad PC1512 [http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp? c=183] (www.old-computers.com) in 1986 that the format really took off. His model was stripped right down but worked well and came with Gem as the default GUI done on two 360K floppy drives. DR's PC-DOS and Microsoft MS-DOS also came with it. No hard disk as standard.

    ps. How the heck do I stick a clickable hyperlink in when there doesn't appear to be an allowed tag for it in that short list of allowed tags???

    I was more of an atari person my self


    Sinclair ZX Spectrum with Brother thermal typewriter driven over the serial interface and Tasword [http://www.sincuser.f9.co.uk/012/softwre.htm] www.sinuser.f9.co.uk . Then switched to Sinclair QL with Quill word processor driving the same thermal typewriter... hey it's output was fantastically high quality for the day (could never afford a daisywheel)

    Not really... I think you'll find that just about everybody these days has got Macros turned off to prevent propagation of macro viruses... Besides... does anyone really use macros at all or were they yet another Gee-Whiz feature to count on the spec sheet that such and such competing product didn't have...

    have you seen the date when they actually did that study??? 1.1RC3 wasn't even on the horizon back in January 2003. It would be nice to see a repeat using the exact same test files.

    and all that pollution from the chemical rocket exhausts??? That stuff's just about the worst thing ever when it comes to dumping pollution into the atmosphere.

    I know precisely how Project Orion is lofted thank you very much... very elegant concept with an amazing tonnage capacity when it comes to payload. Plus very easy to build as well... just get several thousand tonnes of steel and some riveters/welders... no hi-tech ultra-light aerospace materials needed here or throwaway stages. Nice and simple. KISS...

    Orion was only canned because of two things...1) the Test Ban treaty 2) President Kennedy thought it would make America look too aggresive in it's defense policy.

    Time to dust off those schematics for the Orion lifter... the only thing that has the capability of lifting enough nukes into an intercept course to hit it early enough to get a good deflection vector. Of course the eco freaks won't like the idea of Orion being nuclear powered...

    Correct... It should work, as advertised, without needing a constant stream of service packs, critical updates, hotfixes or a permanent subscription to the antivirus vendor of your choice either...

    I never did get my PDA (Sony Clie), MP3 player (IOData Exrouge), or printer (Epson PM930C) to work. I'm not switching to Linux if my purchasing decisions are going to be limited to a few of yesteryear's inferior devices.

    What the heck are you going to do then when the next must have gizmo only has support for Longhorn??? and they ain't gonna roll any XP drivers.
    What about all those poor folks who had to upgrade to XP cos this or that gizmo or must have application was only available for XP???

    Manufacturers are now noticing Linux... and if they've got any sense, then they will start providing "out-of-the-box" support for it. Printer manufacturers are getting it together by providing cups definitions on their disks... it's only those shortsighted ones who're making faux printers that only work with ms-windows who've got it wrong.

    some t0sser called Misiko posted a "DSC-00465.jpeg" file into some binary newsgroups on Monday 18th... it was really a *.jpeg.pif, and would have automatically infected any user browsing those groups using outlook express and image preview set on.

    Unfortunately I've since deleted it (It's an offence to knowingly possess viruses in the UK)

    The message reference that it was in is [MPG.19ab40b72e8ed720989682@news.easynews.com] but google doesn't archive those groups.

    Perhaps that was it???

    Then you've got clueless staff... and in almost all cases, the usual business tools like wordprocessing, spreadsheets etc. are finished apps and functionally equivalent to MS ones. The vast majority of "unfinished apps" that you're blathering on about are all those little pet projects that have died cos the author since lost interest, found a better alternative already written or whatever. All the major apps are finished and are now in their maintenance phase.

    To put it politely... b0ll0x. We're not talking "enterprises" here, but small businesses. The types that really suffer when viruses/trojans hit... the ones that are getting by on a shoestring and can easily go belly up when the next virus/trojan wipes their records or causes them to go offline for a while and miss vital orders.

    Kindly attempt to explain to the audience why Munich stayed with the OSS/Linux quote even when MS slashed their quote massively to well below the OSS/Linux quote???

    People in here might believe you more if you came out from hiding as well. I'm fully visible and can be emailed as well.

    please clue the cable companies and other ISPs in to the fact there are far more email and internet clients available.

    everytime I go to mine with a complaint that something isn't working right (ie my cable modem has stopped working and there is an external network problem), they go what software are you using? and when I reply Linux, they go "sorry we don't support that". So I go into ms-windows just for them and they can only talk me through IE and Outlook/Outlook Express, anything else just isn't on their script... and their first request after I've gone into ms-windows for them is to turn off my firewall!!!

    Do you really believe the "latest version" of windows is going to be any better??? Going by their past record I wouldn't waste any money on it...

    They can switch to linux _quickly_ and _cheaply_ without having to raid their hardware budget. Just buy a boxed set of SuSE 8.2 pro or RedHat 9 and get on with it... Hire a "certified linux geek" for a week to do the initial installs and clue the resident IT geek(s) in on basic admin stuff. Then just have the "certified linux geek" on call with a support contract.

    I'm sure switching to FreeBSD would be just as quick and cheap.

    I'm immune too, because my computer was patched long before the virus was released, and I'm not stupid enough to open .pif, .vbs, .bat, .cmd, .lnk, .exe, .scr, or .com files that came in an email.

    You would appear to in a minority subset of ms-windows users then... :)

    It's all very nice for Mac users to gloat that they weren't affected by the latest trojan du jour and msblast etc. but for most offices, converting to macs requires ditching perfectly good existing hardware... There is an alternative that also isn't affected by those same viruses and trojans etc. that's to go Linux/FreeBSD... no need to ditch your existing hardware at all. most offices won't require their users to be using soundcards or 3D graphics either so there's no hassle switching over as all you should need is basic vesa functionality and all distros provide that.

    And if you can't stomach the thought of ditching ms and switching to Linux/FreeBSD, then you could at least ditch those ridiculously compromised default email and internet clients and switch to something like Opera and Forte Agent if you want proper support or else go with the multitude of OSS solutions and rely on support via newsgroups and mailing lists

    The biggest problem these days is not the actual MS Windows OS, but what gets bundled with it...

    The already existing data may have copyrights that would prevent you from copying it around between yourselves.

    Let's say Site A provides the data on a non-commercial basis freely to users but charges for commercial use. They require you to go through an agreement in order to get this data for personal use or else sign up and get a license for commercial use... Site B can't just go and get this data from Site A and procede to share it out. Because those who got it from Site B would not have clicked through the agreement required on Site A for the download and use of Site A's material.

    This P2P sharing of data could open up a legal can-o'-worms. You really do need to check that the data you want to share around is freely distributable and that you really have permission to do so.
