you must remember that the standard response from Microsoft concerning bugs is firstly that they're features, and secondly, if they're showstoppers, they'll be fixed in the next version... for which you're expected to pay for...
The average computer uses as much as 140 jack-o-lanterns worth of coal to run on any given day.
please define Jack'O'lanterns... your talking bollox by the way... as far as I'm concerned, this PC uses less than a 100W light bulb and all the energy eventually ends up heating my flat... which is what I want anyway. There's far more energy wasted when the PC is built and disposed of anyway... and Linux helps out here, as it enables you to carry on using equipment that would otherwise have gone to landfill...
80MB may be awkward for those on a dial up modem, but put into context, it isn't that bad.
just try downloading MS Office via a modem then... of course, you can't legally do that though... personally, I can't exactly see why they're all wimping about bloat... OOo is free for the cost of a download... MS-Office however, is very expensive in comparison...
'scuse the typing... I'm slightly pissed and enjoying a very long mashup mix and trying to type whilst dancing to it....;)
no, it could have been far,far worse, they could have lost people... people are far more important than equipment and data... brains are irreplaceable... at least not without several years of very expensive training and experience... please remember this... bits and pieces are easy to replace.
It was a very surprisingly well done feature, I can't actually believe it came from MS
I would expect it got used a lot inhouse... they had plenty of opportunity to get it right without having to get the general public to find the bugs in normal use
It may be his prerogative... but it also gave him an opportunity to reset the copyright clock on that work... so, the original prints may eventually make it into public domain, but you try finding one to use... he'll have pulled them all.
Elsewhere: "How much competitive advantage does e-mail give any company? Wouldn't those internal IT resources be better deployed elsewhere?" said one Microsoft source, who asked not to be named.
ask yourself this one simple question... As a business, do you really trust Microsoft not to peek at your confidential emails etc.??? If your data is hosted on their servers, then it isn't your data anymore.
The rule is that if any part of the system (Skype) touches the PSTN, then every call (e.g. Skype-to-Skype) must be tappable. It sounds like this would totally sabotage Skype, FWD, Gizmo, SIPPhone, etc.
that's the entire point... it's the incumbent POTS operators doing their damndest to "compliance" the newcomers out of the picture.
By having a company culture of casual dress (note, I wouldn't want to work in a strict dress culture, I've done it and hated it) they can also see if you're planning something.
Turn up in a suit and tie and leave early, and you leave a very clear sign you're going to a job interview...
I take a day off sick/vacation... far less obvious.
in fact, they keep popping them out year after year... cos the more they have, the more benefits they have and they get a bigger house... there was this couple in the newspaper a few months ago, she had some 12 kids, and he was signed off as unable to work due to health problems... they were getting some £30,000 plus in benefits (including the rental paid on the 6 bedroom house) and they were still moaning thay they had it hard... an employer local to them offered him a job and he refused cos it would mean that a whole host of benefits would be taken away from them...
I'm in the rather unfortunate situation (depends how you look at it really then) of being in receipt of a pension for having completed 22 years in the armed forces... this pension, magically, is the same level as the minimum income, so if I were to be unemployed, I can't get any benefits at all, as the pension is supposed to be sufficient, but it isn't as I would have nothing left after deducting my outgoings on rent and council tax.
Anything? Well then, let's bring back slavery.
Then workers don't need to be paid at all.
when you have slaves, then you also have to feed and clothe them, and look after their health... after all, they're an expensive investment and their value depreciates fast unless looked after... employees on the other hand, you only have to pay them... everything else is their problem...
I'm of the opinion that the north really went for freeing slaves only because they realised that it would be cheaper for business in the long run... the other "moral" arguments were mainly to get the waverers on their side, but the reduced costs for business and the potential for future profit was the main reason.
what we now have is known as wage slavery for a very good reason, you have to feed, house and clothe yourself, and to do that, you have to work... and the work is only available at the rates they offer... cos there's plenty more people looking for that same job... they've got you in bondage to the moneylenders by having you take out loans to house yourself, so you have no real choice but to work.
Unless you're in England, where loads of unemployed find they effectively get an income cut when they start work... cos their "benefits" drop more than the job brings in. Deity, we're nuts over here... we house single mothers and have them jump to the front of the housing queue as well... so what do young girls do??? they get pregnant... cos the child is a meal ticket to major benefits like a house and money for life (until the child turns 16...)
The truth is that kids aren't becoming scientists not because of money, but because they are looking for a way to have a good life, meaning make a good contribution to the world. We put scientists down as geeks and emphasize money over all else. There is zero appreciation for science in the popular culture, compared to Indian and Chinese cultures, where becoming an engineer makes you a respected professional, even a hero to your family.
If you really, really want to know why kids don't see engineering as a viable career... it's when there are job titles like "refuse disposal engineer" (binman) and "sanitation technician" (bog cleaner)... who wants to become an engineer or technician then...
at least I can filter monochromatic sodium light out from my telescope and binoculars... but ordinary white streetlights are a much bigger pain when it comes to destroying the night sky views...
a real contradiction of terms there...;) I'm convinced science education has gone down the tubes... and this is really basic stuff which should be done in junior school...
They want to make sure their software will install and run on Gentoo, SuSE, Redhat, Fedora, Mandriva, etc etc. with no errors of libraries not being found, or missing directories.
then they should fsking static link in ALL dependencies then... don't rely on the library being there... make sure you've compiled your code so it has everything it needs.
it's why I keep trying to cut and paste by highlighting with the mouse and then using the middle button to paste... my Linux habits don't work at work... it's a windows shop...
Linux or Mac OSX are just too different and they keep re-activating the ms-windows ways whenever they slip back just to do that little quick job that they haven't got the hang of in the other OS yet...
That's why duel-booting is such a bad thing really... as it's just too easy to boot back to windows rather than taking the trouble to learn how to do it in Linux...
Shsssh... don't give them any ideas... we'll never see e-paper if they snap that up. I still can't find any radar absorbent paint to stealth my car with...
I've never seen a risk free, easy to revert from, windows upgrade, so why the heck is the author trying to bitch about trying Linux???
What the f's a "DBC"???
Linux is not the OS you are looking for...
now run along back to your Mac... Linux and its concepts is obviously too different for you to grasp...
and precisely how much is this qualifying MSDN subscription then??? out of interest... a pretty penny I'll expect...

I do... the windows version... :)
Doesn't matter... Microsoft would quite happily pay the royalties while watching OpenOffice.org go down the tubes...

I would expect the sticker to be on the cover art... that way, the rating remains in place for the secondhand games market.
