    The only problem with rcognizing who is firing at you is that by the time your eye see the laser beam, your brain is already fried (if your hit in the head).

    Not to say that a laser is almost invisible if it's not aimed at you.

    I just can't wait for someone to release a GSM phone that has no (or a minimal - keypad and one-line LCD) User Interface.

    A cell that has bluetooth and that is very small. I don't need a large screen, my Palm Tungtsen T already has one. I don't need to play games on the phone, My Palm TT does it better. I just need a phone that can initiate the calls.

    A phone like that would not cost a lot and battery life would probably be a lot better that current phone.

    My ideal setup would be:
    - A UI-less bluetooth phone,
    - A Palm TT or any other small Bluetooth PDA,
    - A Bluetooth headset.

    I've checked their website, and it looks like your stuck with reading your books on the Web.

    They do not seem to have any option to be able to read your book offline or download it on your PDA (Palm OS or Pocket PC).

    When I read a book, I usually use the time I have in public transit. So unless they provide a way to read the books offline (I would prefer on my Tungsten T) it of little use for me (and I'm probably not the only one in that situation).

    The service is still neat and a step in a good direction.

    This is surprising that the Canada is way beyong the state in having phone company offering digital satelite TV.

    Bell Canada is offering this service for years with ExpressVu. It is to be expected. The cable co. wants to enter the phone market (they are still far from achieving it) so the phone co want to enter the TV market.

    These days, if a phone co want to get more money, they have no choice in exploring new markets. The land line phone market is already saturated and deregulation meant that they get less money than before.

    New compter will have the following disadvantage:
    - They will fail more often (faster/smaller chips are more likely to accept interference from radiation as they push the limits)
    - They don't have a history of not failing (old computer were well tested in real life and have a strong history of not failling, if they did failled, then the problem was fixed.)

    I'm not the original poster but here is my answer to the question.

    I have a digital camera which use SD cards, if I want to use the PDA to view the pictures in the card, I need a PDA that can read SD cards.

    All other (major) Palm OS manufacturer are putting SD slots in the PDA. Expect to see more devices/software availlable for SD slots that memory sticks.

    If I buy the Sony PDA and want interoperability I have to buy other Sony devices.

    On the other hand, if I buy a device which use technology that nmany manufacturer support, then my choice as a consumer are greater.

    So for me, a Sony PDA is a no go just because of the absence of SD support.

    That's unfortunate as they do produce GREAT PDAs.

    You don't need special hardware to get decent quality.

    I call frequently from Canada to Belgium using Net2Phone and never encounter perceptible delays.

    The only way you could probably get delays would be to run some application that take all he juice from the CPU while making your call (or if your PC is swapping like hell).

    You are right.

    Another similar scenario would be that someone get infected at home and connect to the MS network via VPN (I'm assuming that MS offer that to a certain number of employee), that way the worm will still be resident and may infect the MS network.

    Even if none of their SQL server is accessible from outside the firewall, they can get infected.

    If one laptop user got infected while working from home (without any firewall) then got back to the office and pluged his laptop into the network (inside the firewall) then the network become infected!

    Firewall are not the ultimate protection against vulnerabilities. They can be bypassed in many ways.

    Humm, seems that the editor got it wrong...

    From CNet News they are actually going to release it FASTER that the previous schedule.

    The double core itanium deadline is now 2005 instead of 2007 and adding a new chip for 2004.

    Maybe the confusion arise fromthe fact that "Originally, Montecito, due in 2004, wasn't a dual-core chip, but it was morphed after engineering and manufacturing teams concurred that a dual-processor chip could be mass-manufactured at Intel by 2005."

    It would be a good idea to change the headline!

    I believe the reporter missed the point.

    Digital or not, copying copyrighted content without the consent of the copyright holder (beyong fair use) is illegal.

    Hollywood is already going after people who share digitaly captured content from analog signal (no circumvention device used) using the DMCA and other copyright laws.

    The fact that you don't circumvent protection mechanism does not allow you to share (beyong fair use) copyrighted material without the holder consent.

    Actually, this story is more accurate.

    First this is jusr rumors and speculations.

    Second, Borland will likely become an acquisition target for MS ONLY in the event that IBM complete the acquisition of Rational.

    If MS do acquire Borland, that will be funny (and painful at the same time). They would acquire a bunch of very popular Java products! And the UML tool (which is the thing they are the most interested in) is written in Java! What will they do with it... convert it to C#?

    It strange that they say that using a PVR is stealing. If you want to access premium stuff you must PAY for it.

    I saw many comment about advertisement... Cable cie don't make any money with advertisement with the channels they provide. They charge the channel provider and you to make money. The advertisment money goes only to the channel provider.

    As for the video on demand, if the satelite cie can use a PVR to help get video on demand, then the cable cie can do the same thing!

    I don't understand why they are complaining. Probably only because the satelite cie are moving faster than they are. That not very surprising... Cable cie were never very customer oriented.

    Answer: Instant Messenging!

    Most people think of Gnutella, Kazaa and their similiar P2P application as the ONLY kind of P2P applications.

    There are many other kind of P2P applications in existence, Instant Messenging is one of them. Most use of instant messenging are legitimate.

    You can actually BCC yourself.

    That way, you can prove that you sent the message at some point in time (you have the header added by the SMTP server).

    This can protect you to some extent. It would probably be better if you use a third party SMTP server to do it.

    Note that will only prove that you sent the message, not that they received it.
