  1. Alinea on Molecular Gastronomy, The Science of Cooking · · Score: 1

Cutting-edge food preparation and flavor combinations previously unheard of are being served across the world, but especially in places like Chicago, New York City, and parts of Spain.

I recently trekked out to Chicago to visit on such restaurants, Alinea.

    Photos from my experience here.

The Tour at Alinea in Chicago lasts roughly four and a half hours and is made up of twenty-five courses paired with nearly as many wine tastings. The executive chef, Grant Achatz, opened his well-documented restaurant to excited reviews this past May.

Each course consists of either a bite or a few bites that almost always incorporates an experimental technique of preparation such as sous vide, industrial centrifuge, foams, anti-griddle, German vaporizers or flash-freeze dehydrators. Alinea presents each course on specialized serviceware custom made by designers like Crucial Detail.

The New York Times, Frank Bruni, writes about this new type of cooking, the Chicago Tribune rates Alinea and NPR's Jennifer Ludden radio documents Alinea with chef Achatz.

    The Rimage Client API :

    Fault tolerance
APIs in C, C++, VB, Java, .NET
    Industry standard XML support
    Multi-platform support

    Rimage Network Publishing Multi-Platform :
Monitors a network folder for text file orders
Generates XML from file orders and submits to Rimage system
    Multi-platform support

Based on poking around in (our company owns the DiskLab) the SDK, it'll do almost anything you could possibly imagine. I'd call Rimage up and talk to a developer -- they're friendly and quick on advice.

  3. Opponents to the EC voting system say... on Colorado To Vote on Electoral College Plan · · Score: 1
    Wikipedia says

...opponents argue, the Electoral College is based on a flawed assumption of monolithic voting patterns based on local interests which does not bear any relationship to the actual voting process. Supporters would argue that this is mitigated by the fact that states can decide to award their electoral votes proportionately, rather than as winner-take-all, despite the fact that few currently choose to do so.

Opponents also argue that the Electoral College tends to favor a two-party system. Even when a third-party candidate receives a significant number of popular votes, he may not receive a majority in any state and may not garner even a single electoral vote, as was the case of Ross Perot in the 1992 elections.

Yet another problem with the electoral college is what would result if no candidate won a majority of electoral votes, basically an election which fails to elect. In several elections of the Twentieth century, 1912, 1948, 1960, and 1968, third party candidates won electoral votes. It is certainly within the realm of possibility in a three-way race no candidate would reach the magic 270 number. If no candidate hit 270, the election would go to the House, where, under special election rules, each state delegation would have one vote, no matter its size. If the House election tied, or if enough delegations split evenly, there would be no winner at all.

Maybe you are a serious genius, you take my advice and write about how I changed the course of your life for the better. If that's true, I hope you succeed splendidly.

First, it pays enough to live, no more. Second, despite the pay, I am more happy than I have thought imaginable. I love my job. My job and the career I would recommend is that of the documentarian/journalist.

I am smart guy, but realized when I started a major in biology, that the degree required too much rote memorization - a skill that frustrated my call to rule the world through evil mutant fruit flies. I'm smart, but I haven't the memory for hard science.

PIcking up the pieces of my college experience, I experimented with various degree programs, finally working with my University to create a major that incorporated many of the interests I developed while searching for collegiate direction.

The curriculum I developed was entitled 'Visual Anthropology.' At the time, no undergraduate program in the world offered this program - a few graduate schools had. The program combined my interest in evolutionary biology, social research, the purely technical, creative interests in documentation, and the visual arts. Basically, I learned how to be a science reporter and gloried field researcher.

Journalism and documentarians make great careers for people who like to become intensely interested in topics for a short time, are creative and smart. Take a broad spectrum of college classes from film history to computer science, make sure to cover technical areas such as of photography, writing, and filmmaking. It doesn't hurt to take an interest in art theory and develop an appreciation for story telling.

    Good luck!

Having correct registry information would allow me to track down a criminal who hit my credit card recently. It is the first time I've been had by fraud and thankfully it was only for $9.95.

Somehow, somewhere, someone used my credit information to try and sneak past a small charge on my bank statement. The charge of $9.95 came from DAVWEBSOFT. Searching the web for DavWebSoft turns up a very suspicious web site. It appears "professionally" designed, but on closer inspection, many links simply do not work and news items are stolen from other sources.

WebDavSoft's is a near exact duplicate of these web sites: SBC Web Solutions, Stewart's Precision Web Design, Eadens Enterprises, Fleming Software LLC, Global WebLine LLC, Studio A Design, Prosoftware Inc, Luministic Technologies, Kazland Software Corp, Bailey Consulting Group LLC, International Web Design, GToolboxes Technology INC., Tanya Web Design, Andersoft Inc, Panaginip Salohin Corp, Web Pages Made Easy LLC, E Software Tech Inc., Webtemp Solutions, Inc, and Resourcepdc Inc. Each site lists different fake addresses and phone numbers. Try contacting the phone number listed on any of the pages and you're dumped into anonymous voice mail.

Besides stolen copy, links that aren't links, and duplicate web sites, the most obviously fraudulent element is that each main page has a link to "Don't Recognize a Charge?" which then asks for credit and other personal information. Gah! What sort of company prominently displays "Don't Recognize a Charge?" on their main page?! None, except fraudsters.

If you happen to be a victim of fraud, report it to the FTC and the IFCC.

I would love to catch the criminal behind these web sites before they strike anyone else and correct Whois information would rock my vigilante world.
