Lore is a funny guy who I have found entertaining for nearly a decade, but if this particular nugget of wit was written by some random blogger that nobody had ever heard about, would it really have made the front page of Slashdot?

There does seem to be a lot of 'blog posts as news' at the moment.
MP3 will be just as or more "free" than OGG (public domain is "more free" than GPL, sort of)
To be fair, according to Xiph, the Ogg Vorbis specification is public domain - it's only the implementing code which is GPL, and once MP3's patent expires, no code will be released into the public domain - just the spec, which puts it on equal footing with Ogg.
For example, can your version control software tell you what text changed between two revisions of Word documents? It can if they're LaTeX documents.
Actually, it can. TortoiseSVN comes with a script (diff-doc.js) which compares 2 versions of a Word document. It was one of the things that convinced my bosses to finally move from Sourcesafe to something a bit more reliable, functional, powerful, etc. etc.
This does bring up a possible new (future) feature for slash - allow logged-in users to specify their own CSS URL, to be served instead of the standards.
In my not so humble, the marketing was knackered as soon as the words "From the creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer" came up on the screen for the trailer. I know plenty of people who were instantly put off by that, and judging from a lot of the posts on this topic, a lot of people went to see Serenity despite Joss's Buffy credentials rather than because of them.
When was the last time you saw a show or a movie where a main character got hurt and had to learn to live with the disability
Not sure if you're a fan of Buffy, but the first example that leapt to mind for this was when Xander got his eye poked out (interestingly enough, by Caleb, played by Nathan Fillon) and had to work out the rest of the series sporting an eye patch, and coping with a lot of depth perception jokes inflicted on him by sadistic scriptwriters.

This is seeing an opportunity and using it, and they deserve a bit of success from that. Whether they deserve $164m worth of success is another matter.
Let's remember about LokiTorrent's law defense fund. They had the guts to stand for their rights and say no to corporate bullying, and they are doing it for the rest of us too. If they win such lawsuits would have to stop.
shouldn't slashdot have some sort of journalistic responsibility to retract posts that are clearly hoaxes? many "legitimate" news sources often refer to slashdot as a real reference, and leaving hoaxes up un-changed seems unethical.
The only way legitimate news sources refer to/. is regarding opinion - it's never (or should never be) quoted as a reliable source - not least because/. mostly just references other news sources anyway.
Any news sources which do use/. as a reference, quite frankly, deserve everything they get.
A coworker friend of mine used to ride to work, and he mentioned he had to leave an hour before work.
I don't drive, so I'm on public transport as a rule, which is dire between where I live and where I work - it takes up to an hour and a half to get here by bus.
When I cycle it takes between 45 minutes and 1h15 minutes (strong winds round here - northern coast UK), but however I get here, it's quicker than the alternative.
The main thing, though, is I actually enjoy the ride. It's a great way to work up at the beginning of the day and a great way to de-stress at the end of the day, so if I have to change my route for any reason, it doesn't bother me in the slightest - a different view on the way home is all.
I can't see why people hate Deus Ex 2 so much. Sure, it wasn't an exact copy of Deus Ex 1, but it was still a good game despite the fact that it was suffering from mild console syndrome. Oh well.
To be fair, Deus Ex 2 was a reasonably good game. The worst thing about it was the fact that it had "Deus Ex" in the title, raising expectations way beyond what they would have been otherwise.
And the story was pants, the levels were too small, the skill system was seriously dumbed down and it was over-consoled.

The original BG runs fine on Win2K, so I assume XP should be fine too.
I had some trouble with BG2, but one of the official patches fixed that.
If you do a search for txt files, google searches inside the txt files it finds on the internet.
Similarly for PDF, DOC and whatever others it finds and looks inside (look at the Advanced Search for a little list).
Obviously it doesn't scan and index mp3s - if anything you must search for the name to appear on a page or in a text file (or PDF, DOC etc).
At least that's my guess.
The correct handling of NOT NULL is fixed (or at least fixable) in 5.0.3
Just start mysql with : mysqld --sql-mode="STRICT_ALL_TABLES" and it will error if you try to skip a NOT NULL column on insertion.
