Yes. what he probably means is that his money will be worth based purely on the market, where everyone can participate and prices equal out over time, as opposed to now, where the worth of money is decided by the few we select. There are multiple ways you can interpret democracy through. The current system is democratic too - we elect those who govern our money.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Bitcoin designed to be botnet proof? Sure - the more recourses you have, the more bitcoins you will mine, but also the overall difficulty of mining bitcoins increases for the entire network as a whole! (Here is a wiki entry https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Difficulty graphs of current difficulty here http://bitcoin.sipa.be/)
Another overlooked factor is that the network capacity is important too - it's whoever has the longest proof of work wins.
The gold rush days of bitcoin will soon be over. What we will see next is the value of bitcoins rise, and get divided into smaller portions, eg. bitcents, bitmils, etc.

  12. Re:Open Source -- a rebirth of true capitalism? on The Story Behind JBoss's Boss · · Score: 1

GPL specifically allows anyone to distribute GPL'd code, but only if the distributed code is also GPL'd.

You cannot take GPL'd code and put it in a commercial product, that would be infringement on copyright and the license itself.

Copyright law is designed so that there is an incentive for people to produce original work. It is designed to protect artists, designers and programmers, etc, so that they can live and produce creative work without the worry that someone will exploit or abuse their work.

For example, if you create something that everyone wants, then you have the right to be rewarded for you work - especially if the work was something that required a lot of effort.

The incentive may not always be money. For GPL, the incentive is that by creating new GPL software, you will also help the cause of GPL and help other GPL programmers with creating more software. The GPL license ensures that you will be helping other GPL programmers, instead of helping commercial software.

For example Henry Miller, who first learned German; and Joseph Conrad, who first learned Polish & French.

Free trade increases wealth. Here is a simplified example of how it works:

Total wealth of Alice = $100

Meanwhile, Bob has produced 100 plates, which to him are worth only $1 each.

Alice has lots of cups, but no plates. She will pay $4 for a plate from Bob, because plates are not available where she lives.
Bob has lots of plates, but no cups. He will pay $4 for a cup from Alice, because cups not available where he lives.

Alice and Bob meet, and agree to trade. Alice gives 10 of her cups to Bob, and Bob gives 10 of his plates to Alice.

Alice now has 90 cups at $1 each and 10 plates at $4 each. Total wealth of Alice has increased to $130 (because $90 worth of cups + $40 worth of plates = $130)

Bob now has 90 plates at $1 each and 10 cups at $4 each. Total wealth of Bob has increased to $130 (because $90 worth of plates + $40 worth of cups = $130)

Both Alice and Bob had their wealth increased.
