You think that expressing my opinion as a consumer isn't changing the world? So...I should be silent? I'm afraid the days of Richard Garriott and the lone programmers changing the shape of gaming have passed...at least for now.

Explain this culutral revolution in gaming if you would? I would like to see one as well. A return to the artist and a movement away from the business.

If the gaming community didn't have customers like me, EA wouldn't have to work it's developers to death? As a programmer myself, I'm all for developers having the time and resources they need to produce high quality games. I'd much rather have one excellent game than a slew of mediocre ones. I was complaining about the focus on graphics not the lack of diversity.

I am quite aware that I am not the most intelligent person in the world, but thanks for reminding me, its always good to remember one's limitations. That's very interesting, I was unaware that game engines were non-upgradable and completely static. I see that separating the physics engine from the graphics engine...um.... Right... I prefer the interaction with the environment over dynamic lighting...especially since HL2 can be scaled back to play on the majority of computers while D3 is basically limited to the high end, whom even then cannot run it extremely well. I'd rather be able to spill a cup of coffee and watch it trace across the floor than shoot the hosts of hell once again but this time beneath dynamic lighting.

HL2 made you work for the story. If you played it like a waypoint game, rushing from point to point, you missed the majority of the story. It made you work for the plot, explore and pay attention.

The real question is who would want to play Doom3 anyway? Graphics are wonderful and all, although honestly I wasn't that impressed, but what about gameplay or prehaps a story that doesn't remind one of a mix of the original Half-life and System Shock with some hell through in for kicks. I was much, much more impressed with the physics engine of Half-life 2 than with anything graphically I saw in Doom 3.

I'm one of those people who believe that this rush for graphical perfect will be dying slowly over the next decade. Eventually, we'll reach a point where graphics are as good as they're going to get on a monitor. VR, here we come, right? Well...in any case, for now I'm going to have to suffer through this focus on graphics and wonder when gamers are going to start focusing more on the plot and gameplay as opposed to pretty new shiny things on screen and the impressive rendering of blood effects.

    True...if you're in a tank you don't really feel speedbumps...or so I'd imagine.

Even in operating systems the days of their dominance is waning. It's simply not possible with such uncontrolled hardware for them to maintain such dominance over software. Applying old laws to a new system isn't going to work well. Just as attempting to force Media to follow the old rules promoted piracy, sticking stubornly to bickering over patents is going to hurt them more than help.

Media formats and patents... Meh... Everyone's been patent crazy of late but as the computer world becomes more open source I highly doubt that data patents will be able to hold their ground.

I'll just stick with VLC methinks...

    8. Five down, 95 to go was Apple's main reason for opening the company owned retail stores. "Apple has about 5 percent market share," Jobs said in 2001. He noted that most of the other 95 percent of computer buyers "don't even consider us." Why has Apple's marketshare decreased instead of growing? And what benefit is there to Apple to eliminate the independent Apple resellers?

Perhaps because the computer market has been greatly increasing? As with the MMORPG fiasco, as the market increases so does the diversity of suppliers (How many versions of Linux are out there now?) and each group's market share decreases while their total number of users remains about the same. I fail to see how eliminating independent resellers would benefit Apple at all, however I completely see how having Apple stores that promote their product in an excellent manner would be of benefit.

As for costumer service, beyond purchasing my PowerBook, I have yet to have any contact with them. Having no problems with it leaves me with no reason to contact Apple. ;)

Imagine the frustration of spyware and virsuses forcing you to reformat only to get denied on the phone by some computer most likely as buggy as yours... Sigh... Hugs PowerBook... I'm glad I'm safe.

Indeed, I completely agree. Not only is it greatly disturbing that a developer would betray Apple's trust in him, in addition at this stage in the game I've heard that Tiger is quite buggy. I have a friend who is a developer, graduate level cs guy not some weak pre-med, who has been filling me in on it. Even in its current flawed state, it sounds wonderous.

Most relationships on the "outside" are indeed impermanent. I suppose the difference here is between wanting a deep connection with someone to share all aspects of life with as opposed to temporary connections that are less in-depth and more entertaining.

In the end, it really depends on if you view human beings as animals or not. If the only point in a romantic relationship is sex, than certainly... If perhaps you would like something deeper than you are quite incorrect. Our we like bucks in heat or romeo and juliet. I suspect the answer is somewhere in between and varies based on person.
