    Actually, Ireland wants to - and will - remain in the EU as they benefit from membership much more than Britain. Also, the EU has already told Catalonia that they (EU) will NOT recognize their claim of independence. But sure - keep stirrin the pot, Mr. Trump-Bannon-Farage.

    As Apple pointed out, their phones truly just do not support OTA radio broadcasts. But Pai could not be bothered to uncover this little technical fact first....Now, if he were really serious about this "life-saving" stuff, he could use his R majority on the FCC to mandate that - after, say, 2020 - all smartphones sold in America must be able to receive and play OTA broadcasts but the chances of THAT happening are below zero.

    Seriously - The Economist magazine recently had a great article (https://www.economist.com/news/world-if/21724908-huge-potential-impact-rich-countries-prolonged-loss-electricity-disaster) highlighting A) the catastrophic effect on civilized life and B) the ridiculously low cost of preventive measures and C) as always, the lack of political will, coupled with a lack of technical knowledge across broad swaths of our populace and - especially! - politicians married with a "gubmint regulations are bad, M'Kay!" mentality and you have potential disaster looming. Don' worry, though, the latest version of Apple's iPhone will have an app to fix that! :-)

    Damn! Will wonders never cease? Look, all of you self-driving car Luddites can just stay the hell away from them. For the rest of us, though, it makes PERFECT sense to have National standards for these cars in the same way that we currently have National standards for all current vehicles. Otherwise, you'd have an amalgam of incompatible state-based standards that would severely hinder development and deployment. (California's stricter emissions standards being the only exception I'm aware of.) What's wrong with that?

  17. Likewise Ford. I have a 2002 Ranger and only got one key when I bought the truck, so I went to the dealer to have an additional made. No dice. You must have 2 keys before they will cut a new one. If I lose that one key, it must be towed to the dealer as any attempt to bypass it will result in bricking the truck. Minimum charge (not counting the tow)? $300. Obviously, had I known, I would have bought a different make. Fuck Ford.

    OK, rather burn a mod point and not be able to comment, I'll comment. You are falling into the classic trap of "purity". By your measure, child porn - to use another extreme example - would be allowed. Likewise, ISIS beheading and recruiting videos... In the same way that I have the freedom to travel within America (leaving aside the 100-mile Customs area) at will, there are limits on routes, maximum speeds, seat-belt requirements, etc. to which I must adhere. According to your logic, any of those limits are "OH NO! My FREEDOM is GONE!!". Very stupid, mate.

    That was my first Linux install, soon to be followed by Slackware, then Mandrake. At that time Mandrake (and SuSE) had the absolute BEST interfaces going, though - in true Linux/UNIX fashion - they were entirely incompatible. :-) Think AIX's SMIT vs SCO's or Sun's UI experience.

    Dude, you're "thinking" is fucked up and shows that you are obviously a hyper-partisan. I'm a Bernie fan, but in my career I've hired well over a hundred people. Never once did any political leanings come into the interview or any subsequent review. I had one guy who was an anti-tax radical (sadly, he went to jail and I had to replace him), a gay guy who was "Out" and proud of it. We all loved the guy. I hired gun owners and gun haters. NONE of that had anything to do with job performance which is the ONLY thing that any real boss cares about. If you (or Google or anyone) is hiring for PC reasons of any stripe, you should resign immediately as you are not worthy of any management role. Period.

    Back when I went to CDI in the mid-70's, in a class of 28, there was ONE woman and zero blacks. Was it because CDI was racist/sexist? Hell, no! At the time, DG, DEC, etc., with whom I interviewed, all made me an offer and each also said "If only you were a black woman, you'd be perfect!" At that time, these companies were trying - on their own - to hire more women and minorities. Sadly, due 100% IMO to cultural factors, the pool was shallow as hell. Fast forward and more women and blacks are participating more today, but nowhere near where they need to be to make up for the decades lost. It'll all shake it out in time, but women and blacks need to get onto the damned field!

    OK, the use of BTC to transfer currencies from failing states like Venezuela I get. However, what I see is a lot more folks treating it as a gamble on its value rising inexorably - nothing more. With a hard limit of 21M BTCs and no underlying "store of value", I can't see it being anything but a scam. Having said that, the underlying blockchain tech has tremendous potential for "normal" purposes.

    WTF is the underlying value behind BTC (or Ethereum, etc.) other than its own artificially created scarcity? Gold, cars, jewelry and other "investments" have value whether it's aesthetic or whatever, so can usually be enjoyed in some fashion while you own it. And real American $$ have the advantage of being - you know - legal tender for all debts, public and private" so is immensely useful/valuable. BTC, from all I can see, is just fools gambling. What am I missing?
