Let's all us Americans out here ask the question, "are these guys really the best we have to offer?" I don't think so. I think it is a shame that it takes 100's of millions to run for President. What are the actual chances that someone who really does care will ever get out in front of the american people? zero.
I realize that when you boil it down, this is what the founding fathers actually intended. I am not sure they could have imagined the skewed disparity between the "have" and "have nots" that we have in our country today.
I think it sucks that we are forced to vote based on defense and military action but that is the world we live in. All non-americans seem to think that we want to be shipping our military around the world. The US has such potential to do great things for everyone, it is just depressing we have to focus on defending ourselves.
I would have gladly voted for the Democratic candidate if I could have seen someone other than a wife trying to get her husband something he wanted. Bush himself is not the greatest President or candidate.
Bottom line, you have to have money to even THINK about being president. In the case of this year, it's just a lesser of two evils vote. Unfortunately, I voted based on whether the man could do whatever was necessary in case something terrible would happen and just didn't think JK could have done it.
Gimme a break. What about the upswing where everyone and their brother said 'hey! they are making bucks in the tech industry! let's go over there!!' Loss of jobs since March 2001? Why not from january 1994?
I was in the tech industry before it was cool and very few people knew what the internet was or that it existed. And I am still here after the great purge of those that joined for the cash. I am here for the enjoyment (masochistic I know).
I know us/.'s are geeks, but don't we all think that 400k pales in comparison to the numbers of boot-camp weinies that flooded in to make bank? Maybe they all just went back to digging ditches or actually doing Physics/Biology instead of programming...
Being a non-degree'd individual, having worked at several places where the "degree" ratio was something like 70% PH.D, 20% MS, 9% BS and 1% non-degreed, I have found that for the most part I worked well there because I could come up with workable, real-world solutions. I often implemented what they think would be a great thing into something that actually would work.
I good portion of what PH.D's seem to lack was just common sense and a good assessment of what technology can really do or what you can feasibly do on a real world budget.:)
I do remember one company meeting we had to show us the latest presentation management put together to sell our company better because of declining contract awards. They couldn't understand why with so many PH.D's on staff why we weren't getting the lion-share of contracts. When presented with the slide containing the pie chart outlining our degree percentage, it added up to 102% which I (the non-degreed) guy pointed out.
Can they make this publicly available so that I can get my score and then they can suggest remedies to help me adjust my score?

Trust me this is good news. Having been just left a position working on the some of the critical systems and architectures running the whole ball of wax, this is pretty good news.
The overwhelming drive for these people is to move everything to Windoze and removing their unix servers. Personally, I could not force myself to say that moving to Windoze was the right thing to do considering peoples lives and the US's defense was on the line. So, I left the job. If someone is waking up and wanting to use Linux all the better. Some may say I am a unix-bigot but I just don't think Win* is ready for prime time...still...

You mean that everything I have read online is NOT true?
Please excuse me, I must go question everything I have ever read and hold dear as truth.

Having worked for almost 5 years in a free to pay email service that handled 10's of millions of user accounts, this sounds good but does not work in practice. Most spam and Ad's are targeted which removes the ability to link to it unless the mail service itself created it. Mail outside that criteria is also almost always exclusive. You actually get very little mail that can be cross linked in this way.
If it is real, the actual management of storage of this quantity is the real cost. The TCO for something like this is enormous unless you dont care if you lose data. Keeping RAID storage up and running 24/7 requires some decent hardware, so you can't just go buy it at Joe's storage barn. Trust me this is an enormous IT/Operations cost.
According to the Tao Te Ching there are only 10,000 things, so why so many bits? There must be extra info in there, like where I am going and what I am doing. The chips are spying on me!

Couldn't Murph just be an extrapolation of the fact human's tend to remember the bad, especially the really bad, over success?

Man! I bet you could crunch some mpeg's on that!
