  1. Why do people act like a project would be forced to take in substandard code just because the maintainers aren't allowed to be assholes? Constructive criticism and mentoring can be used just as well in place of being a dickish aspie.

The git merge-bot I use only rejects a pull request if a comment message fails the profanity filter. Otherwise it's auto-merged right into master.

  2. Also note previously to this there was the attitude "Look we should be dicks because Linus is and he must be right because the kernel is excellent! Linus Linus Linus". Now it's morphed into "We should be dicks and Linus is wrong".

  3. That's an entirely different question than what it does to the health and evolution of the code

No it's not, because code is written by actual hu-mons.

Now here's the funny thing. Humans are pretty adaptable. No one was born to write kernel code.Turns out that people who are good kernel coders are good other-thing coders as well. And those people can cheerily say "sod this" ("bugger this" if they're British) and go and get another job coding interesting things in an environment where they don't have to put up with any bullshit.

    And this has happened.

Go ahead and be nice to everyone.

Now that sounds like a plan.

    Don't argue

Or, you know, argue without being a wanker.

  4. Respect is earned, not granted.

Except that is not true in practice.

Some middle level of respect is generally granted, because most people don't treat strangers with no respect (well you might, I've no idea). Respect can go up or down from there.

  5. Many people in these areas where meritocracy matters

It's not a metiroctacy. It's been edging towards an assholeocracy with a minimum bar on merit. Both Matthew Garrett and Sarah Sharp had the merit they conributed large, valuable things to the kernel like (IIRC) powersaving and USB3.

Both left, not becuase they weren't good enough but because they got fed up of the toxic bullshit and both realised that they could have gainful, fun employment working on other things while being treated with respect.

they're trying to become the gatekeepers of what's acceptable.

Someone's always a gatekeeper. In your world, instead of saying you have to be one of the best to work here, you are instead saying you have to be this much of an asshole to work here.

You culd ask your feminist friends about the privilige concept and what it means if you like.

Did you ever notice this btw? How people in the populist right are always poorer than those of the populist left?

Don't know which country you live in. In the UK and the US, there are populists on both sides, but poorer people tend to vote left in the UK and Democrat in the US.

As for alimony and whatnot, yes if one partner went to work and the other stopped a career to raise the family, keep house etc then yes the labour was split so the proceeds of it should be too.

I guess every generation have to find their own sob story about why they're angsty teens, but honestly... what the fuck is so wrong with society today?

Same as it is every day. It's inhabited by a monkey[*] evolved primarily to live on the African planes. Turns out that monkey is only so-so at living in a high tech area where gorging on everything in sight is not a good survival strategy.

in fact the only thing I can think of is that we're so independent and socially liberal that nobody wants partner with uninteresting people because of economic dependence or social pressure or they got pregnant. Today she gets an abortion, there's no shotgun wedding.

You think the fact that women (and men, though you seem to single out womenhere) aren't forcibly married to someone they don't want to marry is what is wrong with us? I'd say that's one of the things that's very mugh right about us.

What? Has there ever been a point in history where the male role has been less macho?

For the current values of macho, yes. In the past, men had very deep, emotional and expressively so relationships with each other. With the rise of "uurrr no homo" this has largely vanished. This means that men are often without emptional support that they did have in previous eras. Seriously, go ready some man-to-man letters from some of the golden ages of macho men being manly. They can be touchingly deeply emptional in a way which is frankly hard to picture now.

In fact, many men struggle to find the balance between still being a gentleman and not behaving in a way a modern woman finds condescending.

With friends like you, men don't need enemies.

And how to functionally date when it's not like I'll wine and dine you and you'll sleep with me.

See my previous statement 10fold. That forumula like so many things we appear to consider "historical" was from the 1950s.

Probably not. I'm not a SV resident, but I'm a londoner for possibly many of the same reasons. It's much easier to attract people for jobs when there are lots of alternatives available, the person's spouse can easily get or keep their job and they don't have to move. I'm in London because my spouse has a career here. We kind of settled on that because we knew it would be easier for us to both get good jobs than just about anywhere else.

God no. What we have is a duplictius, anti-semitic arsehole.

Anti semitic: no he's never said anything anti semitic. However the party under him, with him at the helm takes a strong stance against well founded accusations of antisemitism and a very gentle stance towards the anti-semites. At some point if you keep standing in the way you're part of the problem.
He's also cut from the same cloth as David Cameron, underneath. Cameron was the kind of arsehole prepared to put party before country which is why he held the referendum. Corbyn knew then and knows now that a lot of people, and the poorest especially (and many man of his voters) will be fucked by Brexit. He eventually camd down in favour but refused to share the remain platform with the Tories becase he was more concerned with putting party before country and that old party rivalry was just to important.

He's also a massive hypocrite. He was one of the most rebellious backbenchers when he had little power. Now he has power, he's really keen on using the whip and there are growing talks of delselection. Oh and the whole "we need a higher tax bracket but it should start just above what I'm earning".

Ha also. His little usual tour in front of his cheering crowds at Glastonbury. FFS. Yes he was all like rah rah policies rah to waves of cheers. Except I note that his single biggest policy: "we will follow the results of the referendum ant take Britain out of the EU" got no mention at all. Because it wasn't a politics tent it was a bloody Trump style rally.

Labour party, it's not in power, he probably won't win, even if he does win there will be endless shitheads causing problems for him and all the media will rail against him as it already has. He nearly won the last election despite the media putting in the boot but too many people let TV and newspapers do their thinking for them.

Yeah I remember the media campaign against Corbyn at the beginning. It was pretty disgusting. Lots of blatat misqoting and quoting out of conext, borderline lies etc. I was actually pretty pro corbyn for a while. I do actually like quite a lot of his policies, some of them a great deal. But I've come ot really dislike the guy.

He also seems to be somewhat stuck in the past with a vision of british industry which is barely more than teams of men in cloth caps looking serious and bashing rivets. We do have industry. That isn't it. Pretending otherwise isn't going to make it come back.
