You are going to have to do several things in order to keep the internet "clean".
* First and formost you must talk to your kids about the reasons for these rules and do your best to help them understand them(obviously not always possible).
* Secondly you should impliment a technological solution not netnanny or anything that runs on their local system that is easily bypassed. Block port 80 and setup a proxy for html access, preferably one that blocks inappropriate sites. I don't have one to recommend but I'm sure someone knows of an open source proxy that make work, ask around. And make sure you are watching the logs. Also check with your kids to make sure that the web is still usable for them with what ever rules are setup.
When my child is old enough, I will feel secure with her being on the web by having because I'll have both these methods in place.
BTW (Personal Pet Peeve) - If your child ever says "don't you trust me" it probably and indication that in this instance you shouldn't. (I know that was the case for me when I was growing up)
I think the oldest hardware I'm running is my Zoom 28.8 modem I bought back in '93... I got a great deal on it too only $100. I mainly use it to connect into my network now vs out but it is still in use. And now that I think of it, I've also got my old Sound Blaster Pro that I bought at the same time.
Anyone else notice the lack of advanced notice that verisign gave... well the world. I just can't immagine that they thought it through at all. If they wanted to do it you would think that they would have notified ICANN ahead of time or put up some sort of notice
Everyone is always talking about the fact that SCO wants a buy-out... I'm thinking that is exactly what they want but they are expecting it from a completely different company than IBM. SCO knows that Linux is becoming a major competitor in the Corporate world and what company is doing everything it can to stop this.... ding ding ding... that's right Microsoft.
I have seen tons of comments about how what SCO is doing is very odd... normally you approach the party that you believe is causing the problem(IBM in this case) and ask for them to resolve the issue, so that both parties can save face if there is a problem... however SCO began this in the public domain and refuses to show any actual proof. If actual proof was shown the linux community would remove the lines ASAP (contrary to SCO believe there is definatly more than one way to scin a progrm) however at this point that would damage their prospects at a MS buyout (no linux threat = no MS $$$'s).
At this point they are only damaging their reputation and making people question the reputation of linux. They have destroyed any semblance of a "corporate image". They company that will potentially benefit the most from this whole scandal is MS. I mean look at how quickly they sent funds to SCO. By paying SCO they were trying to "legitimize" SCO's claims in the public eye. I wouldn't be suprised to see a MS buyout of SCO in the neer future.
SCO what is that I've never taken that drug before?
Oh you're gotta try it. You'll feel on top of the world, and you will totally lose your connection with reality.
Wow sound great
Oh there is one downfall though... you tend to start fights with the big guys... you know the type of fight that you can't win.
A couple of years ago SCO worked with the linux community on trying to bring together Unix and Linux... who is to say that their own programmers didn't insert this code durring that process?!?!
This is a good idea but what we really need is a "consumers bill of rights". Allowing us the right to use what we purchase. See this site for furthur information on Consumer rights www.digitalconsumer.org
You need a little correction on your tower of babel story....
The story came about in Genesis when all people spoke the same language. The people had decided to build a temple to heaven (as in a temple that reached al the way to heaven). They were trying to bypass the way that God had set for them to enter heaven. They were trying to "become like/equal to God". God knew that with one language they could accomplish anything so he decided to confuse their languages. At that point God caused people to speak different languages and the construction on the temple was abandoned because people couldn't work together. God did this because he had a better plan for mankind... not because of jealousy.
As for the babelfish I can't comment as I haven't read "The Hitchikers Guide to the galaxy" but it sounds like a reference back to the confusion of the languages
The only real advantage that MS has over *nix/BSD is its' easy of use. Don't get me wrong I love *nix/BSD but would I install it on my parents computer or even my non-techie friends computers... I don't think so. , however they are quickly losing their lead in this area as the other OSes mature.
Maybe this will force MS to write some quality software... who knows soon they may have to realease a *nix version of MS Office just to stay competative... that will be the day;)
HP may be having problems selling the pocket PC but other companies are doing fine. Dell's sales have been on the rise every month this year. I guess if you price your products for the masses they sell much better;)

Unfortuately it doesn't seem like it is re-usable at this point so its current usage would be very limited
(geek)I've got one word for you ... Superbowl(/geek)
(sarcasm)Wow I'm finally a statistic. My life is now complete and I can die happy.(/sarcasm)
Somehow this news would be more interesting if I wasn't one of the 500,000.
Inform the Music Industry
... weren't people requested to inform on fellow communists durring the "Red Scare" for immunity.
... I didn't quite realize the extent of this witch hunt until now.
That sounds strangely familiar
Wow
