Does this now mean that the US will Bomb India to protect US Business Interests Abroad? Hmmm...
On a more serious note, seeing as India has a population of over 1Bn, that is a huge market that is probably worth the cost to tap into it. What is of concern, however, is that they are starting with MSN Yahoo and eBay. Who will it filter down to in the end. Will these Virtual boarders spring up all over the net. That would truely be a sad day. I would hope that memebers of the Worlds largest Democracy will fight against this infringement on their freedom to access information.
It was obvious! Microsoft can't have their name tainted by such a (relatively) stable product on offer! I knew it couldn't last. The first and only Windows OS that didn't crash for fun and they decide to discontinue it!
There are numerous issues to be considered when testing your code. What are you testing for? Who is doing the Testing? What kind of Error/Exception Handling is in place? What processes are in place to manage project? How have you defined "BUG"?
Just because you have tested does not mean that your application will be bug free. Does your bug crash the system, or do you have correct error/exception handling in place to deal with any and all bugs?
I'd suggest that you invest the time to develop a robust Exception handling, Logging and Debugging system. Flag all possible errors (Database interactions, NullPointers etc) and deal with them specifically. Decide which errors must notify the user, and which errors are for the system log. Which errors should cause the system to halt, and which can be ignored as expected or minor. Make your error messages meaningful. If you use Java, then try Apache log4j to handle your logging.
The best rule to follow is: 1. More things can go wrong with the Software System than go right. 2. User actions are always unpredictable. 3. Expect the unexpected/worst - then deal with it.
Shame that no one in the US know's what Football is. They confuse a game where they carry the "ball" in their HANDS as Football?!?! That they don't know that their team is through to the Quarter Finals of the FIFA World Cup - the worlds biggest Sports Tournament after the Summer Olympics. And most Americans don't even know where South Korea or Japan are! :-) Go England!
I guess experiences differ -Though I am intruiged about who is the "Senior Unix Admin" that you're talking about!:-) I forgot how much the eu.net and xlink guys were pissed off by being told to move over to Win NT. Fourtunately I didn't have to deal with any of that politics - we had enough with the bozos in HR playing power games.;-) My experiences with the hiring of permanent staff was that they were brought in to replace contractors regardless of experience or skill set. They were basically hired by HR to fit a specific profile regardless of anything else. I will agree that some contractors were incredibly overpaid, and some seriously took the piss with overtime (NT server boys come to mind). However, I don't recall running in to as many Clueless contractors as I do recall running into clueless permies. But the clueless permies were sent on loads of courses. I could name a bunch of such ppl, but that would be inappropriate.
However, that is the least of the issues that contributed to the death of KQ. Management Nepotism, Screw-ups with the Cyber Centres, senseless wastage of money, treating of the xlink and eu.net guys like shit and forcing them to break an existing working system for the sake of integration in to the coorporate crap. Oh yeah, and there was the small matter of the recession. I think that most of the issues would have taken place in most other large corporations. Hence I place most of the blame on the loss of the revenue stream that was caused by the recession. Perhaps the KQ revenue stream was too narrow, and hence they suffered.
I recall joining KQ back in the Summer of 1999 as a contractor. I spent one year there and had a great time in Holland! Back then, they had loads of money, a truly upbeat atmosphere and a great group of ppl. Back in the early days, just about everyone in IT department were either Contractors (the majority), or from companies like KPMG, Cap-Gemini, Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) and some other smaller companies. Early on, they were spending LOADS of MONEY. Anything that you wanted, you'd get it. New hardware, software, cool gadget; no worries. Free mobile phones for everyone (Gosh I missed those) to make all the Internationals call that you want, and the KQ would pay for it! Ah the good ole days!:-) What has to be understood, is that back then, they were a brand new company that had $2bn invested in it (from KPN and Qwest). Then in October '99 they Floated on the stock exchange. Hence they had even MORE money to play with. This was also during the good old days when no one ever thought of a recession. Everyone believed that Broadband was a good thing to be getting into. (To the office in The Hague we had 4 166Mbit ATMs... Great for Napster). From about April/May in 2000, the Bean Counters started comming to prominence. Discrete emails would be sent around advising ppl to stop abusing their mobile phones etc. Movement to more permenant staff and the removal of Contractors and Consultancies. Cap Gemini were the first to go, closely followed by Pink Elephant. (Many of the consultants decided to join KQ as permenant staff). Any purchases needed to be fully justified and authorised. Usually rejected. The main problem involved in getting rid of contractors and bringing in permenant staff, was that their was a) a massive brain drain, b) inexperienced and many useless ppl were broaght in to replace some very good ppl. A lot of presure was placed on managers to only hire permanant staff and mind their budgets. So all contractor overtime was cancelled (limited to 40hr week max). It was around this time that our manager (from KPMG) was cancelled - he was costing them way too much. This resulted in us getting a new manager that was cluesless about who all the team members were, what they did, or the technologies involved. Hence, by the end of the following October, with the exception of 3 permanent staff members, everyone in our team had left. (I'd left in early September 2000). Our team wasn't the only one to collapse under poor managment. By the end of the year, all the contractors that I'd known had all left. Most due to management stupidity. Loosing their Deal with IBM regarding their Cyber Centers could be discussed in further detail. I only know one side of the argument from a fellow contractor that was part of the team that had to pick up the pieces. After that they were also hit by the recession with their share price falling from around the $50 mark down to around $8! My association with KQ ended their, though I've still got lots of friends out there. I do feel sorry for quite a few of my friends that are/were still there. I don't know what they will do now. It is sad when I recall the upbeat atmosphere and excitement that was the company back in the Summer of 1999. Then you see it start to fall apart. Finally they become a victim of circumstances (IT Recession). I could complain about other issues of management, however, I'd say that the recession and fall in the High Bandwidth broadband market is what is really to blame. No company, however good the management can survive when it has no clients!

I guess that your way to solve crime would be kill everyone without a job (since they have the potential to commit crime to improve their status), Kill all the Blacks and Hispanics (Like who needs a reason for that), oh yeah, and get all the Italians since they're all potential Godfathers too!!! I guess we could Nuke Harlem and South Central LA while you're at it - Atlanta might might be good too! You could say that about ANY and EVERYthing! Your PC, Your Car, Your Washing and Cleaning liquids... Everything in the wrong hands CAN be used for evil. I'd have to agree with that. The best driving I've seen is in Germany. (Only country I've been to where, despite driving 140MPH, other drivers were still overtaking me!:-D). Despite their speed limits (or lack of them on the Autobahns) the Germans are VERY disciplined drivers. Speed limits in built-up areas and around schools are much lower and everyone abides by them. During the Year that I worked there, I never witnessed anything that i could describe as reckless or dangerous driving. No one cuts you up, every body signals, no idiots hog the outer lane - in short, driving there was pretty stress free. Hence, it can be shown clearly that speed is not in and of itself bad. Rather drivers are bad/impatient/inconsiderate etc, and that needs to be tackled. ys P.S. I wish it could be used to catch the bastard that Keyed my car!!!
As with all technologies that are present, this one has the ability to be misused or just mis-interpreted. However, the idea present in the system are not poor. When at university, I knew many students that worked nights as security guards. Most of them would either be studying notes or sleeping! Having a machine to help during the monotony isn't necessarily a bad thing. If however this leads to harrassment from the authorities just cos you have bad social skills is another matter. Hence its use must be monitored and have regulations inplace to tackle misuse.
Damn, My Yearly Contract with Pipex is inplace until October!!! Admitedly I get 2MB downloads, But also have to PAY for it! Must remember to renegotiate that contract...:-)

"Wahaabism" appears to have been misunderstood by you. Firstly there is no such thing. It is a (derogetory) nickname given to Muslims that try to stick to essence and core of Islamic Monotheism (Tawheed).
Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahaab, was a Scholar and a Reformer. He wrote some books (The Book of Tawheed, Three Essays on Tawheed; among others). That challenged many of the corrupt ideas and philosophies that had entered in to Islam, from the influence of many of the other cultures that been assimilated into Islamic rule. He showed by evidence that these NEW beliefs (Saint Worship, Grave Worship etc) had nothing to do with the Islam that was taught by the Prophet Muhummad. His call was heared by one of the Rulers in Arabia, and the "movement" snowballed from there. So it is these aspects of WORSHIP that you will find the "Wahabies" most strict upon. Indeed it is strange how many ppl speak about Wahabies without ever having read even one of his books!
"Wahabism"/Islam, has no "Viscious" ideas, and nor is it Extremist. Bring some evidence for your statements, or remain silent.
The majority of Arabs do not resent the West. Nor do they dislike the West. They do, however, resent the US's Blind unquestioning and un-equivicol support (Media, Financial, Political) of Isreal. Isreal flaunts UN resloutions as though they didn't exist. Iraq gets Cruise missiles and Bombs. 600,000 Iraqi children have dies since the Gulf War (Official UN figures), and Madeline Albright says that it is a price worth paying. If you were an Arab, and cost of your children's lives were described as such, how would you feel toword the speaker and the country she represents? Hence, Western "Culture", has nothing to do with it. If it did, they wouldn't be buying into it.

Sony DVD Player (DVP 725)
Sony Digital AMP/Tuner (STR DB900)
4x Kef Cresta 3 loudspeakers
1x Kef Cresta Center.
REL Q50 Sub woofer
Sony Projector (can't remember the number)
You're obviously sorted with the DVD player and projector/TV.
Get a digital Amp, since most have a tuner built in. You don't need another CD playre, since your DVD will play those for you. My laptop's got a Digital optical out (in the docking station), I use that to play my MP3s!:-)
DETAILS
1. All systems sound different depending on the room settings? Carpets/Wood floor? Big heavy sound damping curtains, or roller blings? Shape of the room? Various other forms of furniture? Positioning of Viewers/Listener(s)? These all play a part in the type of system, height of speakers, angles etc...
2. If it is a decent store, they should come and install and demo the system for you! Test it in your listening environment. Test it with the kind of music YOU listen too!
3. Quality of interconnects cannot be understimated. They make a massive difference in sound/picture quality.
4. Use Spikes to Isolate the speakers from the floor.
SETUP.
Use the amp as the central Hub.
By doing this you can connect your laptop etc all to the same system for sound and vision, and will not have to make drastic adjustments each time.
Most respectable amps have loads of inputs!
Connect your DVD player via the S-video cable and Digital optical/coax cable to the AMPs inputs.
(Get good quality cables for this!)
From your amp, connect to the TV/projector, via an S-Video cable. (S-video provides a much sharper image than SCART.).
Your amp is already connected to your speakers. (make sure all the speaker cables are the same legth.).
Quality cabling is a must. Sometimes gold cables can sound too sharp, simple copper will do fine. It all depends on the rest of the setup.
Finally adjust the amp with the relative distances/heights of each speaker relative to listener.
And that's about it! Just stick in the Matrix DVD and relax!;-)

Another good way to reduce errors is to follow the principals of Design by Contract.
State using Assertions what is expected of the code. Pre Conditions and Post Conditions.
If any of these fail, then throw an appropriate Exception.
The best rule to follow is:
1. More things can go wrong with the Software System than go right.
2. User actions are always unpredictable.
3. Expect the unexpected/worst - then deal with it.

The main reason for relational databases was the speed with which queries would be carried out as opposed to other mechanisms.
And the simple Discrete Mathematics that was inherently used to get the queries to work.
Ignoring the issue of Ethics and making pacts with the Devil etc, I believe (especially with the current IT downturn) that I'm in the wrong business! :-)
Some of these Lawyers made $200,000 just by filing a comlaint! And the other guys are trying to sue intel for $7Bn ++!!!
And all this is a legal way to make money!!!
On the one hand I bust a gut working 65hrs+ a week or I sell my soul to the devil and sit on my ass writing ppl nasty letters for a couple of hours a week for exponential sums of money!
Not much competition there...
The Echelon system (and their ilk) are triggered by the use of a set of keywords.
SO why not clog up the system by over using the keywords in harmless emails! If enough ppl do it (or if email clients just randomly added them to emails...) then I doubt the system would be "as" effective.
The more noise, the harder it is to find the information - needle in a stack of needles!

You'll get a very good idea of the going rates in many different countries.
I only got my system a few months ago and it is truly sweet.

Sony DVD Player (DVP 725)
Sony Digital AMP/Tuner (STR DB900)
4x Kef Cresta 3 loudspeakers
1x Kef Cresta Center.
REL Q50 Sub woofer
Sony Projector (can't remember the number)
You're obviously sorted with the DVD player and projector/TV.
Get a digital Amp, since most have a tuner built in. You don't need another CD playre, since your DVD will play those for you. My laptop's got a Digital optical out (in the docking station), I use that to play my MP3s!
DETAILS
Just stick in the Matrix DVD and relax!
