  1. Every rental addition helps on Administering a PC in a Vacation Rental Home? · · Score: 1

A good friend of mine has a nice beach rental in N.C. - If you have a nice house with a nice deposit and a healthy rental fee, people take care of things fairly well.

Another aspect is that most improvements increase the rental value. I helped them finish an addition to the kitchen which made it possible for 8 people to eat dinner at the same table. Rental fees are higher, and the renters are HAPPIER!

I just don't get people who insist that since THEY don't want a computer on vacation, NOBODY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO!! If you want to install a computer with high speed access, that probably will attract a new set of customers that realize you want them taken care of in every way!

As for the backup restore - my OPINION is to not start fresh on every boot. Especially if you're using Windoze. I would be REALLY annoyed if the stuff I wrote up last night (since the kids were playing on my laptop) is TOAST!!

When the cleaning person comes in after the renters leave, one of their duties could be to log in to an ADMIN account and double click the icon that says "RESTORE".

It would be nice of you to install LINUX with a guest account and leave a Knoppix CD for them to take home.

    ANOTHER OPTION:
Remove all furniture and carpet, put in 3 keg fridges, make the bathroom into another bedroom and rent a Port-A-Potty. That way those lousy worthless renters can't hurt much, and they can drink all the beer they want. Just turn the fire sprinklers on high at the end of the week.

But that's only if you don't repect others...

Come to Southeast Ohio!! Nice hills, pretty flowers, dialup connections and (referring to post)..We bought 5 bottles of Pepsi and won 3 times.

Oops. Forgot to download those free songs.

Bummer. And I'm pretty sure I lost the caps.

Did I mention we have dialup?

DIALOG?? It's a SPFX movie!! If you wnat dialog, get a book. The only reason I ever watched the other Start Wars movies is for the effects and to find editing and storyline errors..

    Too much dialog confuses me.

OH NO! I've typed WORDS! Quick - Somebody blow up something or crash some spaceship into a planet!

OH, I've gotta go - My wife just put in Pride and Prejudice and I want some SERIOUS DIALOGUE!

Geez. What's the deal with all these pro-MS people posting? Is Bill ordering the minions to personally SPAM /. ?

Get a grip, folks. Oo doesn't require you to dig around in a computer desk drawer to find the old registration code when you have to reinstall a MS product. Oh, that's right - you don't need one at all for Oo!

We received a computer that was "Secure" from a Virtual Public School ( they really stunk, BTW). Since they neglected to provide the login and password for the computer, I did a Google of 'hack xp', found out how to bypass the login and create a new admin user. I then logged in again, setup the internet, downloaded Opera and OpenOffice, and accessed all the MSOffice documents the school provided. I couldn't use MSOffice or even Outlook for email since they required the unavailable LEGAL reg codes the school couldn't find.

    HERE'S AN INTERESTING POINT!!!!!
My kids used Oo until the school sent ANOTHER copy of MSOffice. I went ahead and installed it, then found that OpenOffice WOULD NO LONGER WORK! I deleted MSOffice, and all was well again.

    SUMMARY-
    OpenOffice did what we needed.

The MSOffice installation somehow corrupted the Oo installation.

    I still have Oo. I pitched(microwaved) MSOffice.

Oh yes, remember that OpenOffice can RECOVER MSOffice documents that will not open with MSOffice! And ANOTHER THING! If MS is so "interoperable". why can't I open my realy old MSworks documents with MSOffice?

    Hmmm.

Use OpenOffice. ...if the team at MS used it, they could have made their FUD document on a PC instead of a Mac!
