walmart.com is Java-based; there was an article on theserverside.com a while ago about their process for upgrading from Java 1.4 to 1.5.

Not that I agree with the OP, but I have one example : Prohibition. Of course, that led to the rise of bootlegging and organized crime. Let's hope we don't have to go through another "remoralization" of the US any time soon....

    1. Turbine most definitely did perform rollbacks for bugs that only affected the economy -- the platinum scarab exploit was one such case. Granted, they only did this in the most extreme cases. Players creating millions of pyreals out of thin air was pretty extreme. ;)
    2. The fact that Turbine generally didn't take decisive action unless the issue was extreme resulted in a massively screwed-up economy. Were you around for the potion selling "exploit"? I made enough pyreals off that in one evening to have cash on hand for two years.

I won't even go into their policies on macros/3rd-party apps and the effects those had on game balance....

Are you serious? There are tons of people (typically men aged 35-50) who develop health problems, up to and including death, every year due to working too much and the stress that causes. My coworker developed esophagitis from overworking; a manager in my brother's team had a heart attack.

The traditional commercial software development process ran out of steam twenty years ago. Proprietary software can not compete with free software and those who cling to it will be swept away.

I won't argue the long-term prospects for commercial software, but to state that the process "ran out of steam twenty years ago" is just asinine. A whole lot of companies have made a whole lot of money selling software in that time period. It's only been in the last couple years that non-proprietary software has made any significant inroads into Corporate America.

I believe he's referring to the fact that a significant majority of the Zionites were non-"white" -- mostly black and Pacific Islander, by my estimation. There's a whole lotta light brown skin in that place. ;)

I haven't seen it discussed before, but I think this is probably intentional. I also noticed this in the 'Time Machine' remake from a couple years ago -- most all of the people in the future scenes of that movie have dark hair, dark eyes, light brown skin, etc.

Someone in Hollywood apparently has a bit of a clue -- slowly but surely, the human race is homogenizing. Walk around any major metropolitan area of the US, and you'll see this for yourself. The social pressure against interracial marriage is easing; more interracial couples are getting married and having children every day. Mixed children tend to have dark hair, dark eyes, and light brown skin. There are variations, of course, and occasionally you'll see a dark-skinned person with clear blue eyes, but in general the pattern is as I stated.

Now take this trend to its logical conclusion, say 1000 or 10000 years in the future. Barring global catastrophe, there's no reason to suspect that this increase in racial mixing will stop. Indeed, as more of the world reaches higher levels of industrialization, and thus greater average wealth, and thus greater freedom of movement, I suspect that this trend will increase over time. Couple that with the extremely low birth rates in Western Europe/US/Canada/Australia/New Zealand (where the majority of "white" people live) compared to the rest of the world (mostly non-"white"), and the trend toward darker eyes/hair/skin seems inevitable.

We won't see a Zion-like racial mix on a global scale in my lifetime, or that of my kids, or even their kids, but in evolutionary terms I think that's the way we as a species are headed.

Not normally, if you're a salaried employee -- at least not at smaller shops. You'll typically sign something that says how much they'll pay you per year, but how much you'll work is assumed to be something along the lines of "until the work is done."
