now they could have royalty free music for their "switch" commercials. :-)

I think that ASCAP,BMI, and SESAC would have a real hard time with that one. Just because you own the label doesn't mean that you stop paying royalties to your artists and composers (which used to actually be the same thing).

The "you" was the important word there. I didn't say you are free to determine the price that the retailers sell at. I said that you are free to determine the price that you sell at. There is a pretty big difference there. If GW wants to sell their products only through their store at an exorbinate rate then it is their funeral. I am not saying that they can turn around and force their retailers to sell at the same rate. If they were smart they would just sell it at a higher rate to the retailer. That would force him to sell at a rate comparable to their website or even more.

What's your point? I don't see GW forcing their retailers to sell at a certain price. They are just saying that they don't want to let them sell at all. It is their choice and their stupidity. People will just choose one of the dozen other miniature manufacturers to buy from. There is no law that says you have to have retailers to sell your product.

Can you give an example of a country that has policies like you describe? Here in the US you are allowed to determine which distribution methods you use. You are also free to determine the price you sell your product at. The only time I can see it being a problem in this country is if you use your pricing to drive competitors out of business (predatory pricing) which isn't the case here. I also don't think that GW has a monopoly on figurine sales.

While your case is good for Linux you are way off for OS X. This is especially true with your example of HP printers. HP provides Mac (OS 8,9 and X) drivers for all of their USB printers. When it comes to mice and keyboards both Logitech and Microsoft support Mac. Actually, almost anything that is USB has Mac drivers. The only time you are limited is when you have something with Parallel or Serial interface since those aren't typically available with a Mac.

I think perhaps you cut and paste your post from somewhere else and just added an "and/or Mac OS X" throughout.

Let's see. 10 years ago the internet was fledgling, most homes didn't have PC's and those that did didn't typically have network connections, and the ones that were part of a network were usually part of a closed network. I would definitely think things were a lot more secure back them. Maybe compared to 5 years ago would be a better analysis.

Ignoring the whole household vs salary argument (how many Indian families are multi-income?) take a look at the two important numbers here:

Indian Average Household Income - $2,847
Indian Median Household Income - $1,005

Source - Asian Demographics Note these are Urban households which is what is applicable in this case.

The reason for the huge difference is due to the huge gap between the poor and the wealthy in India. In the US the average is $49K and the median is $42K which is a much smaller gap.

In summary, the two things you need to take into consideration in your argument are the number of multi-income families in India (couldn't find that number) and the gap between the wealthy and the poor.

How do you have a community of homeless people? Are you saying they are houseless but all live together? Homeless implies someone wandering the streets with nowhere to sleep at night. A community implies a place they can always go to sleep. I would also question how many of these people live like this by choice. They often would rather live on the streets than take handouts from the government. Many of them are also mentally handicap and almost all of them have a drug or alcohol problem.

I think you also don't really understand what a caste system is. In a caste system you cannot move up. It is based on the Hindu belief of stages in life. What you are referring to is the difficulty to move out of poverty because the education that you need to move out of poverty is not available or inadequate. People do move from poverty into at least middle class occasionally and they are more than just a token few. The problem is that some of these people doom their childen to fall back into poverty by having too many of them.

Actually since the US average salary is around $20,000 it would be the equivalent of $213/month. Of course, either way this is a flawed argument because the guy who makes the average in either country isn't probably buying this type of service.
