Why should it be a couple of thousand? Why should it not be the default option? After all, for the hospital to know how much they should charge you, surely they should be recording all the items they use, and the time their HCPs spend with the patient.
I heard urban myth that a hospital in the States charges $12 for a q-tip. For that much I could several boxes of q-tips! So the reason why they don't itemise is because the hospitals are ripping you all off.
Ask yourself this : Why should someone pay for your healthcare if your not an active participant in improving your own health. Then realize that a sizable portion will tell you to go F off all the while not screwing over themselves by not doing anything or worse doing the wrong things.
So you don't have car insurance then? Afterall, why would you pay for someone else's car accident?
You clearly don't understand the concept of insurance. Let me help you with that. Following your logic: Do you actively go out on driver improvement courses?
You're the owner of the car - therefore you pay the tax. If you want to charge the other guy for driving the car, that's your business. Of course, this is America so you could always sue the other guy to pay the taxes after the fact.
Surely part of the problem with the Constitution as it stands is that it was written in the 1790s, when they didn't pave roads etc. The Founding Fathers had some great ideas, but perhaps now is the time to start looking at a new constitution - one that incorporates freedom of speech at the outset, rather than being bolted on the side like it was an afterthought.
With the current taxation system, the more heavily polluting and inefficient vehicles are taxed more, creating an incentive to buy 'greener'. Trouble is, the only people who can afford new cars (ergo more efficient), are the wealthy. The people who are least likely to be able to afford more efficient vehicles are the poor, who are by definition the ones who need it the most.
What makes me really laugh about the Americans whinging about people spending their taxes on healthcare, is that despite spending nearly twice as much per capita on healthcare than Canada, they still have a lower life expectancy for reference and their infant mortality is significantly higher. And even funnier, their % of government revenue spent on health, is higher than Canada too.
Surely a solution to this is for the government to regulate the healthcare and medical insurance industries to ensure the cost isn't completely ridiculous so EVERYONE can afford healthcare.
Oh - and before anyone bleats on about not being able to see a doctor when you like - Canada has a very similar number of physicians per capita to America. There is no need for rationing.
Also - for the parent posting - when will you decide your body is failing enough for you to get insurance? When you're 30? When you're 40? When you're 50? Sickness can strike at any time - it's not just limited to the old.
I wonder how well this system will cope with detecting crank calls. The emergency services in the UK get them all the time. Will this system help by calling the cops to the location where the crank call was made from?
I've never understood how IMDB makes any money - so what happens if/when they disappear? I very much doubt they will make their database free and available to all and sundry. So whilst I can, I scrape IMDB for the information.
Having said that, I would like to see a "Add this to my Netflix Queue" button, or "Play this" button.
Actually, information about the amount of radiation needed to cause cancer at the very low end of the spectrum is sketchy at best.
According to Idaho State Uni radiation sickness will only occur at higher concentrations. But there is whole spectrum in between 'safe levels' and levels where radiation sickness will occur. And this spectrum is where cancer is most likely to occur - enough to damage cells that then go on to reproduce cancerous cells but not enough to kill the person outright.
Ironically most of our understanding about how much radiation is too much came from the nuclear explosions in Hiroshima.
Both phones are charged (likely) Both phones are iphones (not so likely) Both phones have 'Bump' on them (even less likely)
So unless you've forgotten how to use a piece of card, business cards are still going to work.
Nothing wrong with having 'Bump' (or any other similar system - Nokia has been able to swap cards for years) as such, but in the event of one of the three above not being available, business cards are a tried and tested method of swapping information with no risk of also swapping a computer virus. A 100% compatible system.
Many of our children's attitudes are gained from the parents. Seeing as Americans are so fond of suing people, perhaps the schools should be considering suing the parents of the bullies to recover the cost of being sued by the state.
Could you explain to me why being homophobic shouldn't be prosecutable? Oh that's right, because the religious nut cases who perpetuate these myths have too much power.
From my distant memory for my High school history education, shooting Hitler in the early years would indeed have neutered the Nazi party because of his charisma. Towards the end of the war, it is my understanding that keeping Hitler was the best thing for the Allies as he wasn't a very good tactician.
Contrast how the IRA has been neutered and ETA more recently tackled.
The IRA hasn't been neutered. Inexplicably however, they do seem to have curtailed their own activities. This has created a sub-group the "Real IRA" who are just as extreme as the IRA was back in the 80s (I only mention the 80s because that's what I remember - they were probably just as extreme before that).
The 1st amendment says you can say what you like, and not be prosecuted for it. It doesn't say that people won't hate you for what you say - the Westboro Baptist Church as an example. I've not yet heard of anyone who doesn't think they are a bunch of c***ts
The "sticks and stones" verse is the biggest pile of s**t I've ever heard - see my comments re: the WBC above
And the boxing gloves thing is especially a bad idea, given that someone would get sued to cover the medical bills.
Oh - and did I mention the bit about most of the world wondering why it is America has constitutionally separated church and state - and yet it would seem you can't get elected UNLESS you go to church once a week?
I don't know what people outside the U.S. have been taught, but it's hardly the hellhole you've been lead to believe.
As has been commented on, I think you can squarely blame the likes of Fox News, and the Republican party as a whole for the kind of view other people think of the US. My own personal perspective is that as a gross generalisation:
* You are all gun crazy, to the point where your solution to school shootings is MORE guns, not less. This despite your second amendment being very clear that the citizenry should only be allowed weapons if they are part of a well regulated militia. * You are all uncaring - you don't even have the common decency to provide healthcare to your entire population * You are all greedy, and money grabbing * You are all loud and brash - something a lot of British people find very difficult to cope with. * You hate anything that looks like it might be a good solution to society as a whole, but which might not be so great for a few people. This despite the effect the Federal government has had on the indigenous populations. See my comments about being greedy
My personal view of Fox News is that they are the Sinn Fenn to the IRA. They are the mouthpiece to a bunch of loonies.
This is of course my own personal perspective. I'll go and put my flame proof clothes on now.....:)
I've not got a faith in their manufacturing processes however. I realise this isn't an entirely fair comparison, but I've heard horror stories about the motorbikes that have been coming out of China. For example a friend of mine bought one and was going through batteries like they were made of water. Turns out the alternator was generating 16v which will boil 12v batteries. The British Office of Fair Trading has seen a 100% rise in recent times of complaints about Chinese made goods.
Lets hope the same manufacturing processes aren't used in their chip manufacture.
I've worked with quite a few doctors over the years. He's not alone in that attitude.
So you're not vaccinated? How dumb are you?
Why should it be a couple of thousand? Why should it not be the default option? After all, for the hospital to know how much they should charge you, surely they should be recording all the items they use, and the time their HCPs spend with the patient.

My friend just had her gall bladder removed. She didn't do anything to get gall stones, they just occurred.
Cost to her - £0. Why? Because she's in the UK
Was there anything she could have done to prevent the gall stones? No
Was there anything she could have done to predict she would get gall stones? No
So why should she be financially punished for something there was no way to predict, or prevent?

In the UK, the mileage is reported annually when the vehicle is inspected. How would this be any different?
You're the owner of the car - therefore you pay the tax. If you want to charge the other guy for driving the car, that's your business. Of course, this is America so you could always sue the other guy to pay the taxes after the fact.

It's pretty much how the Roman Empire worked.
Actually, information about the amount of radiation needed to cause cancer at the very low end of the spectrum is sketchy at best.

Cos ya know - teenagers always think of the consequences of their actions
Mod up!

I'm not a troll, so I guess I am misinformed. See my previous comments about how this Brit views America in general.

I'm sure they do have very smart engineers.
