It's not beyond the realm of possibility for example that the IT department decided to do the damage themselves. Highly unlikely considering the level of damage done of course, but still possible
My debit card is a perfect example of this. Neither I (I have 'free' personal banking), nor the store gets charged for the use of the card. I suspect they have a charge for keeping the terminal active but as I understand it there's no transaction fee. Which is a win win. The store gets their money direct into their account which reduces their liability and their accounting. I don't have to carry cash - especially loose change.
Then you are unusual in that - as am I. Most people, particularly poor/poorly educated don't realize they get charged a huge interest rate. 7%-14% is way lower than anything I've seen round here (in Canada). More like 19% - 30%. And the UK was no different when I was living there.
I get the same discount if I'm using a debit card - 3.5%. And my bank doesn't charge me for using my debit card - win/win. The annoying thing is about it is that you have to pay in the store. You can't pay at the pump and get the same discount. Which is retarded.
I'm spending closer to $40 per week, but I'm on the road a LOT. The $2 here, $2.50 there makes a difference in the end when I'm filling up every week.
The key to "creators" getting over this mentality is to forget it exists, and to stop focusing on those that might be illegally sharing your work and instead focus on the ones that are actually buying it.
To add to this, the majority of the money made from albums these days doesn't go to the artist anyway; it ends up in the pockets of the lawyers at the RIAA. There is a growing number of artists who are abandoning the traditional models and encouraging copying and providing a DRM free way to enjoy the content without the attack dogs at the RIAA even getting involved.
There's also the band of people who will pirate to try before they buy. There is growing evidence (with varying degrees of bias, so I understand) which shows that this band of people spend more money on music etc than the band who don't pirate at all.
They key thing to learn is to make sure Skype doesn't auto-recharge and delete your credit card details from your profile. It's a damage limitation exercise.
This will be a test case for Germany. Depending on the outcome (which I expect Google to lose), then all the companies - MS, Yahoo, Apple etc - will have to comply or face their own day in court, potentially with even bigger fines that what Google may well be facing.
Fine, then why should I not just go pirate the latest [insert name of big US recording star here] if I am only violating US law and I am not a US citizen ?
That's not a great argument because there are international copyright laws. You'd wouldn't breaking US law, you'd be breaking your local law.
This. And all that will happen is people will put their rates up to account for the difference in take home pay. It's ludicrous because the sites are wasting all their time micro-managing but will end up paying the same.
This is why I'm not touching Win 8 with a barge pole. The OS should work out of the box without me having to install additional add ons just to get it to behave in a comparatively sane way.

I've never had, nor intend to have a car loan.

I can get the same discount if I use my debit card, so I do get the $2.25 discount.
I don't quite understand why the Canadian government need to do this. There are banks which offer free personal banking - including Debit Card use.

Like Vista to Windows 7, Windows 8 to Windows 9
Never going to happen
Are you telling me that Google doesn't employ any lawyers or people who understand the law?
Also, once the German courts are done with Google, do you think they won't go after MS to ensure that they are also in compliance with German law?
This will be a test case for Germany. Depending on the outcome (which I expect Google to lose), then all the companies - MS, Yahoo, Apple etc - will have to comply or face their own day in court, potentially with even bigger fines that what Google may well be facing.
Well if you can't tax them directly because they are tax dodging companies, how else are they going to make the companies play fair?
Yes, but we get more services from our governments:
"Free" healthcare
Roads that aren't essentially gravel/one giant pothole
Bridges that are safe to cross.
You know - all that good stuff
Probably not - yet. Germany are probably using this a test case before going after Microsoft, Apple and any others.

And less danger to your own people - no one flying planes or shooting guns.

No - just that yet again MS produced a crap version of Windows. *If* history repeats itself, then Windows 9 will be considerably better than Windows 8
Also petroleum is a surprisingly stable product considering what we use it for.
You'd have to store it another form - make it safer and easier to transport
