    I think Internet ownership pretty much ends at the borders. Perhaps it's time for alternate root DNS? Sounds a lot like a job for the UN. Sure they'd probably fuck it up with even more politics than US ownership, but it still sounds like a UN project.

    If mainstream sites close (and they could well be forced to close on a permament basis thanks to software patents), more people will become informed and the corrupt civil servants who put their names to this garbage directive will be held accountable. Such a result can only be achieved with a groundswell of public support, 2400 websites is a good start towards that end.

    Support your argument. Can't? Because it's crap. How will 2400 obscure web sites "going black" inform anyone about anything, other than the people who already know what,s going on? It won't.

    The Slashdot game crowd doesn't like to hear this type of thing, and no question, Zonk and his boy Timmy will log in under assumed names and use their unlimited mod points, but MOST people including a lot of Slashdot regulars, don't give two shits in Hell about video games. Believe it or not, there are a shit-load of people out there that dig Doom95 and Solitaire, and then after a few rounds go back to normal things like socializing with real humans, writing code, doing sports, and other non-game shit.

    I'm sure you are right. But my set-up can't be that different than "average" users, since really that's what I am. I'll have to look into the "NAT" thing. I'm not a hardware guy. That's a little of why I find it hard to believe that there can be so many "open" machines out there.

    I wonder if there is an intelligent tutorial for non-hardware people that explains all this...

    I really do not believe this. My PC has been Windows XP for years. I have no firewall. I have a static IP. I have an ActionTec modem and Cisco router. I have Norton Corporate. I have no problems, and I do know how to tell. So why have I been so problem free? WHY? I don't know... I think it is "security" companies that blow a problem out of preportion.

    No, I think he likes attention. And anyway, my guess is that a lot of people already know he hangs there. It's not like it's a private club...

    But yes, my comment about social skills was a little stupid.

    If anyone is interested in conversing with James Gosling one-on-one, he (amazingly) hangs out at DevShed.com in the forums, likes to aswer questions, and my guess is he knows what he's talking about when it comes to Java. Even more amazing is that as smart a guy as he is, his social skills leave a lot to be desired (read some of his posts in the Lounge).

    Google for the "GS" scale. Most government employees are anywhere from GS-5 to GS-9. Executives are around GS-13 to GS-15. It's not that much.

    Slashdotter's love to bash Roland. But it's not Roland, it's the Slashdot "editors". Why do I say that? 5 of the last 7 stories I have had accepted by Slashdot (under different User Names) where pulled straight from Rolands web site (without any links). I think you all just like to hate Roland because he get's a lot of stories accepted.

    And let's be honest . It's not like most of the stories here are that much better than Rolands, and if Tim is the editor, usually worse.
