You may "suspect" all you want. But there have been many opportunities for the FSF to act. I "suspect" than they will not, as they would have already if they where so inclined. The fact of the matter is that dishonest people like those responsible for the CherryOS know that for the most part, the FOSS people are all bark and no bite. As far as I'm concerned, the GPL is worthless, and deceptively so.
"Troll"??? It's not a troll. And it's not a condemnation of GPL either. It's a truthful statement that most FOSS developers can't afford to sue people.
'spose it also depends on if they have or have not included the GPL thingy. Have they REALLY violated GPL? Or are people just pissed because they want to make money on freely avail. code?
The sad truth is that the GPL has no real teeth, because most of the people writing GPL'd code do not have the resources or time to do anything about "code theft".
Both montypythonsspamalot.com, where 19,000 people had signed up for a newsletter, and movinoutonbroadway.com, where 14,000 had, were built by Mark Stevenson, a designer in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.
Mr. Stevenson said he had hired a programmer, whom he would not identify, to add the list sign-up function to the sites. He said that the amount of resources put into security on the sites had seemed adequate, but "in retrospect, this was not enough, and we need to do more."
Why would they use some obviously "home grown" half assed mailing list code when there are perfictly good and fairly sold apps out there like Mailman or EZmlm? Sounds like the "designer" hired some friend, prob. som kid who just learned about web scripting...
It's my understanding that old cell phones are in high demand in places like Iraq, for, um, "alternative" uses. I suppose you don't *have* to use them to detonate bombs, the remote control aspect is intriguing to me.
The Air Force beta tests ECERYTHING that comes out of Redmond *extensively* before allowing systems administrators to install, at least a year. In fact we are only just now completing our deployment of XP to replace Win2k, and XP Service Pack Two deployment is still a good six months away. So, this "extra" month will do absolutely NOTHING for us here in the Air Force. Nothing.
And before I get the usual flames from someone with no life that thinks anyone who doesn't use a console is a a loser, I have a small business I run that is based on software I wrote. I was using command lines back in the late 1970s when I was lucky to get time on a paper terminal and excited when I could use a VDT.
Is your small business in a room with steeply sloped floors carpeted in broken glass with a snow machine bolted to the ceiling?
So it's OK to use GPLd code, but then again, it's not? Come on guys, you all poot and poo about the GPL, but than you trash someone who takes advantage of it? Can't have it both ways.
The point is that it's going to be hard to maintain a pool of qualified astronauts if they have no incentive to train for it because of no chance to actually go into space. You don't just pick these guys out a few months before launch.
Which is why, when you run your own personal mail server (qmail with vpopmail, anyone?), you should not have a default catch. If it does not go to a real account, dev/null it.
In major markets, there are so many possibilities these days for ISPs, I'm not sure why people accept this crap from providers. Sure, Comcast and Earthlink don't allow this, so why use them? CenturyTel has no problem with my mail and web server, and for a very low $5 more a month even provides me with a static IP.
And why does it matter what language the script used was in, unless there was some bug in a script on the webserver related to the script parser...
Because this is Slashdot where Perl is king. Actually, given the current ice cream language de jur here, they would have gotten big Slashdot ass kiss points for using Ruby for Rails, or some other esoteric technology. The reference to PHP is just a poor attempt to draw PHP into the fray in a negative light.
More average joes who have used computers for the past years would most likely know more about Netscape than Firfox.
I'm sorry, but this is crap. Netscape slid from the consciousness of 99% of the "average Joes" several or more years ago, and this version will have an equally weak to non-existent effect on most of the surfing public. The "average Joe" is now only vaguely aware that something called Netscape ever existed, and though they have heard of this new "alternative" browser called FireFox, they are for the most part ignorant of any connection at all to Netscape.

I think you have answered your own question!
Yes. I support legalized prostitution.
"Troll"??? It's not a troll. And it's not a condemnation of GPL either. It's a truthful statement that most FOSS developers can't afford to sue people.
Nonsense. Mailman and EZmlm can be "seamlessly" integrated into *any* web site, without any work *at all*, they are "stand alone" apps.

Little Timmy is at the "Editor's" desk, so watch out. Here comes a new Roland story!
This is Slashdot. We don't need no stinking FACTS!

Of course, but the GPL does not RESTRICT you from doing this.

Well, there's your problem right there...
Well than, my guess is they don't run an email or web server off of their WiFi. Get a grip.
Which is why, when you run your own personal mail server (qmail with vpopmail, anyone?), you should not have a default catch. If it does not go to a real account, dev/null it.
What makes you think they are trying to preserve a dieing business? What they are trying to do is prevent competition with an emerging business.

Normally, "editors" would do something like this. Does Slashdot have "editors"?
