At least give the program a somewhat descriptive name, ie Office, Internet Explorer, TurboTax, NotePad, Photoshop, etc...
I love the way you undermine yourself in the very next sentence!
If I were looking for a music player on Google
On what, sorry? Google? What is this nonsense word? Oh... it's a search engine? Well good lord! I never dreamt of associating the meaningless gibberish "google" with that. Why didn't they call themselves SearchEngine?
jesus christ on a pogo stick, please, read the book
Seconded.
There is no spoiler, it's the idea that counts
Exactly. The concept/theme/idea(s) behind the book are manifested in the very language it's written with. That's precisely why it is, imho, the greatest novel ever written in the english language.
And the book is filled with some of the best comedy too.
Seconded again. I've read it countless times and still laugh aloud almost every page.
Full disclosure: I grew up in (well, near) Cambridge, it's my "home town". I moved away about 6 years ago and only go back a few times a year now to visit my parents.
Lets get one thing clear: it's never been "all punting and Pimms". That's the uni - the town has always had the regular problems any town has - albeit, perhaps, not as badly as other cities. Poverty, drugs, crime, etc. In fact, Cambridge has one of the UK's highest homelessness populations, outside London.
But, despite that reality check... Growing up I DO remember it as an overall 'nice' town. Yeah, it had those problems, but stay out of Arbury and so on, and keep to the city centre, and it was indeed... nice. Not much crime, you felt safe, most of the people looked... well, not exactly 'genteel', but normal.
The last couple of times I've gone home to visit, I've been blown away by how full of chavs the place is now. Even in the city centre, I didnt feel very safe walking around anymore.
I'd prefer a pristine analogue copy that I could convert myself
Do you own better ADCs than the folks with multi-million dollar studios? You know, those ones stuffed with 50+ years of the cream of audio recording technology? No, I didnt think so.
While space programs, universities, astronomy facilities and so on struggle to get serious funding, what seems obvious is that there is a huge massive of people enthusiastic enough to pitch in for free.
Another poster has already mentioned the quality control dangers in this 'free for all' approach, but so long as the tools and processes used are documented, experts can check things out after the fact, and the early "rushes" can always be corrected if QA does slip.
All in all there is surely plenty of scope for 'distributed contribution' in this arena. SETI@Home is an obvious example but this shows it doesn't necessarily have to be so formalised/organised.
If I am not at a PC, I can read them with my blackberry or my cell phone.
Good for you.
However, I don't have a blackberry (whatever that is), and my cell phone is designed for, er, making phone calls. It doesnt do the internet, and if it did I wouldnt much want to read it on a 5*20 character display, or whatever it is.
Bearing in mind I'm a young, single male, in a first world nation (UK) with all the tech available if I want it, with a fairly well-paid job, and a long-standing penchant for geek toys and techy things.... in terms of the world at large, I think I am in the top 0.1% of the population who is likely to have such tech.
But I still don't have these things.
So, um, don't count on paper vanishing instantly. Try to remember - you are not a representative sample of the entire world.
That's the only genuinely interesting story I've read on/. all week. Possibly all month.
Jeez, you people bitch when Michael posts ludicrous hoaxes that Snopes have already debunked, Taco posts something dull about Apple just for the chance to slate it, and there's an article dedicated to the fact that, er, nothing interesting is happening in hard drives. (See this weekend).
But we get an interesting, refreshing and original read - you still bitch.
I keep forgetting how disgustingly ugly XP is left in that default blue theme. I was so nauseus, I could bearly concentrate on the app long enough to realise you're absolutely right.
Actually, you're (maybe) slightly wrong - I get tons of Spanish language spam. But, of course, that isnt necessarily coming from the EU -- it could easily be coming from the dozens of ex-colonial countries in Africa, Central & Southern America which speak Spanish.
On the other hand, even the Spanish spam is vastly outweighed by the US spam.
It's nothing but a slew of American mortgages, American "meds" (never heard anybody use the term here, also there is no market because there arent millions of people hooked on Valium, Prozac, etc), degrees to good on your "resume", etc, etc.
Fix up, guys.

Agreed, and worse still is Memento at 32!
I mean what are DVDs if not about films with replay value?
What is Memento if not the first well-known movie in years to literally require at least two viewings!?
I had no idea this movie was taking this approach, I thought it was going to be standard live action.
I've got to say, I think this could really work. Being "non-realistic" in the first place adds scope for elegantly coping with the multiple (and extremely blurred) levels of reality in the book (which, btw, is my favourite from all the Dick I have read so far).
Once again - try and slate MS based on what they actually do. There's still plenty wrong with their software and behaviour - criticise that instead of harping on about things they've already fixed, which doesn't help your credibility one iota.
Lisa: Dad, do you know what Schadenfreude is? Homer: No, I do not know what shaden-frawde is. [sarcasm] Please tell me, because I'm dying to know. Lisa: It's a German term for `shameful joy', taking pleasure in the suffering of others. Homer: Oh, come on Lisa. I'm just glad to see him fall flat on his butt! [getting mad] He's usually all happy and comfortable, and surrounded by loved ones, and it makes me feel... What's the opposite of that shameful joy thing of yours? Lisa: [nastily] Sour grapes. Homer: Boy, those Germans have a word for everything!
Too true. I had an initials.surname@uni.ac.uk email address when I was a student. It died when I graduated. Almost 18 months later I got a job at the same uni, my account was created with the same mailname, and voila - 2 or 3 spanish language spams every hour. (and as a student i dont remember getting very much spam at all!)
I love the way you undermine yourself in the very next sentence!

Sorry for the OT ramble :)

Is it verbatim?
If so, that "they" is very telling.
Check the busted wrapping.
Great parody.

I recognised the 'structure' of the scam but havent seen the film for a few years, so I didnt realise it was identical in content.
I said FAIRLY well paid (about $25k), and I said 0.1% IN THE WORLD (ie. including the billions of third world residents without even any electricity).
Erm... do you really think "Lock, Stock" invented that scheme? C'mon...
If it's a site I like/respect and wish to support, I don't use adblock.
But you better it's ready and waiting to be deployed if you give me a flash ad, anything that blinks, anything that moves, etc.
Good for you.

AIUI, it has different editorial staff but is owned by the same charitable trust.

No single app crashing has ever brought my XP system down.
Stop flaming Microsoft based on their OS of 6 years ago. It only makes you look stupid.
Imagine if MS put out a press release slating OSS based on the 1998 versions of Linux, OpenOffice, Firefox, etc. You'd be jumping all over it.

Hehe. But the only really quality paper in the UK is the Guardian, which is practically communist to American eyes.
In Korea, only old radiation is always positive.
"and has been crawled by Google".
There's still a lot of stuff Google simply hasn't indexed.
