    I clicked on the "operated by transmeta" link, and it took me to the updated transmeta page. how come this wasn't a slashdot story!?!

    instead of saying "This web page is not here yet!" it says "This web page is not here yet! ...but it is Y2K compliant. "

    Not to read into things too much, and to let my train of thought go too off track...

    But is this a sign that rules for the Internet & Technology Industry aren't going to be the same as rules for say, the Tire Industry? When a guy working for Goodyear suddenly drops them, and works for Kelley, thats more of a direct threat than in the tech industry. There are a small number of companies in the tire industry, but nto the tech -- its wide open.

    New arena, new rules?

    IIRC, It's been approved and is currently available. It can be undone, as opposed to LASIK. To quote one poster who said in a different thread, "They can "touchup" and do a little bit more, but never take back what has already been done.. " Not the same with corneal ring implants.

    It's not like these companies are announcing "Hey, that Windows thing? Yea, that doesn't work for us."

    These companies just realize that they could expand their market by *additionally* adding alternative OS machines.

    Their Windows machines are here to stay (for the near future at least) but they are willing to dabble in other OSes in addition to M$'.

    I thought that $10,000 was to simply *establish* a bank...

    Nauru profits by charging fees: for example, $5,680 to establish an offshore bank and as much as $4,980 every year after that to keep the registration active.

    .. Or are you referring to something else?

    Anyway, $10k to establish a bank is nothing. Am I misreading this?

    A *LOT* of people pride themselves in being into underground bands or whatever. But once the band hits the mainstream, "they've sold out."

    Same thing with a lot of linux users: they used it because it set them apart from the crowd. Now? "Linux has sold out."

    I have a confession to make.

    I run Windows98.

    I know, I know. But I feel this is the appropriate time to come out of the closet.

    So, I ask: Is *BSD as easy/hard to learn as Linux? Can I/ Should I start with FreeBSD?

    This isn't meant to start a flamewar, of course. I'm just curious.

    So, in order to not piss anyone off, who should I approach with my linux questions? I would assume the developers would know the most, but I shouldn't waste their time, right?

    Where should I go with all my linux questions? (i.e. Websites, IRC channels...)

    But is it really the average intelligence? People aren't submitting their own ideas for the moves, they simply voted for the move they thought would be the best. All the possible moves werent up for voting, just the 5 or so ones that the teenage grandmasters suggested. Therefore, I don't think it is even the average intelligence of the participating players.

    The point was he wanted to do this legitamitely. He realized he could have easily snuck in if he wished, but he would rahther have done it the legit way. A lot of people would rather fight the rules than circumvent them.

    It was an interesting concept, unfortunately it was tainted by Microsoft (Note: Not a generic Microsoft dig, they just did a lot of bad moves, e.g. letting only MS Windows users decide at one point...)

    Would there be a possibility of a rematch if it wasn't run by Microsoft? Slashdot could run it :)

    Arrrgh. The Slashdot method I believe is the best possible for moderating. -> No comments are deleted, not even those "LINUX SUX LINUX SUX" posts. If you don't agree with moderation, just set your threshhold at -1 and let the moderators do their jobs without being harrassed. If you disagree with moderation, just wait for that post to come around on M2. If you can't do that, then e-mail Rob or something. Just let the moderators do their job.

    Based on some responses to the "I have X phone lines", some people here don't pay the Phone Company at all. These people used a cellular phone for voice & cable modem for data.

    but...

    last time the FCC left something alone (namely, cellular phone service) for the industry to figure out, a bunch of incompatible technologies came out. All these delays in getting a singular standard out has pushed the United States behind the rest of the world in cellular technology.

    I don't know if this analogy is applicable, but its an example of the FCC butting out being a bad thing.

    I thought it was that you couldn't use the computer as long as the "Seatbelt" sign was on (i.e. during takeoff & landing). During the meat of the flight, though, I think you can use a computer.

    (Well, I've done it, and flight attendants never said anything to me.)
