Why not? Don't you think that maybe if these losers hadn't been spending all their time in a fake reality that they might have developed some sort of intelligence and responsibility?
I don't think that violence in video games is the issue here. I think the fault lies with the parents who let video games raise their kids.
What about a system where each node could act as a bot for a specific subject. Then each node would be linked up to other relavent subject nodes.
In essance it would be like a the DMOZ Opend Directory Project except with P2P bots instead of manual maintanance.
For example Node A searches only for movie reviews. Anyone seaching for anything related to movie reviews would be pointed to Node A.
Node B would find results for movie stars and therefore be linked up to Node A.
Each node could could handle multiple subjects and many nodes could have redundant subject coverage.
It wouldn't necessarily be a direct replacement for Google but it could provide some interesting results.
I can't see them doing this without signifigantly screwing over their own user base. Not that M$ is above screwing over their own users, but Excel and the rest of Office are big sellers and I'll bet they want to keep it that way.
When you write about the simple yet challenging puzzles I couldn't help thinking of an online game I stumbled across a while ago called The Mystery of Time and Space It's a simple Flash game with great puzzles. Check it out.
Holy crap! I can also tell the difference between difference - maybe I should just drop out of CS and become a social scientist. This could be my great calling!
Unfortunately I know a little about good and bad but hopefully that won't affect my grades to poorly.
btw, since when are scientist supposed to be social?
"One group consisted of 60 users aged 25 to 55 with computer skills but no prior experience with Linux or Windows XP"
How does one go about find 60 people with computer skills who have never used Windows XP or Linux. I would think that previous experience in any version of Windows or *nix like system would kinda skew the results?
Maybe they found a reclusive colony of Amiga users somewhere in the southern Pacific?
Karl Sims has also done a lot of work with evolutionary graphics and animations. Check out his web site here especially the section on Evolved Virtual Creatures.
Ken Perlin created a similar technology which procedurally animates characters walking using his Perlin Noise functions.
While this isn't technically a GA approach, it does provide simialr results in real-time.
I think the advantage with genetic algorithms would be that once you have clearly defined a fitness function that allows a character to 'wave hello', you can easily evolve several more characters each with their own distictive wave with very little extra work.
Think of the battle scenes in LOTR for example, 10,000 orcs is not something that you want to be keyframing by hand.
It should be quite simple to stop this type of spam if it's sent via dictionary attacks.
All that the telco has to do is setup secret dummy accounts and when any of those accounts recieve messages, that sender is blocked from the system.
I can see it now. Eight centuries from now they'll be saying:
"Gee, that astroid thing is coming up soon. Where did I put that computer simulation from the 21st century?"
I mean seriously will computers even be around that far into the future?

Yes you are not incorrect. Fuel cells do not handle heat very well. At least not as well as conventional alkaline cells. :)
I can only imagine the look on thier faces when they see how many times "Linux" has been queried on their search engine in a single day.

I've never been a leet gamer by any means but now I can add enzymes to the long list of organisms that are capable of beating me at computer games.

Check out his cool applet.

Is it just me or could this have all been avoided by properly implementing the "evil bit" as mentioned in RFC3514?
LOL, somehow I don't think that an ark (regardless of the size) will get you out of this one.
