The are 243,023,485 (wikipedia) cars in the United States alone, monitoring all of those with GPS would be beyond a tremendous undertaking. I highly doubt it would ever come to a situation where we are all monitored -- too much money, too much man power, and the government isn't that stupid/crazy.
Honestly, the only thing that seems even close is onStar, especially how they used to advertise it as "just as important as a seatbelt"
Also, there are probably even more credit cards, and a lot are actually already monitored to prevent identity theft by monitoring what you purchase usually vs what has been recently purchased. And just like cars, for the government to database and actually care about all this would be a tremendous waste of time. But actually I have heard a few things about how they can (or want to) see who buys materials to make bombs, so at least that is perhaps remotely possible, but not the cars thing.
Big Brother is watching you, in public! Surely, being in public violates your privacy!
I think it's a bit alarmist to go on about Big Brother, privacy, etc when we're talking about cameras that are in the street, as if you'll be showering there or rubbing butter on your lover.
Of course, a system like this could be abused if you started watching people jay-walk, but then again jay-walking is a crime and if a cop was standing there watching you, you'd also probably get in trouble (actually, probably not, I've never met a cop (personally) who cared about jay-walking in most cases).
To assume that any kind of authority watching you in the street is automatically big brother reminds me of people who live in the woods, want to separate from the US, and act like a bunch of crazies.
Anyone can see you in the street, log you for any purpose, and any cop can stop you and fuck with you. How is this any different than what's been happening for years? Other than it's over a camera now. You can't automatically jump behind "omfg privacy!" when it's in public. There are millions of people to watch, so it's a little naive and alarmist to assume it'll all be used to control your everyday life.
P.S. Sorry if this is hard to read, I keep having to hide the window from nosy co-workers.
The problem with that is the MUI versions of Windows must be in English first so that there is an English base, then you can switch the languages. I ran into the problem when I needed to install Norwegian XP onto a computer, Microsoft said to use the MUI it had to be an English version of XP Corporate first then you use your language packs.
It's always been a huge pain to find Intel drivers, you are about 10,000 times more likely to find the specs for the hardware you're looking for on the site, rather than the drivers. I just hope that their communications isn't the same way, trying to find the manual or some kind of support and all you find is what your hardware (or software) has in it.
Of course, as a whole we treat the earth like shit, but more Socialist countries like Germany recycle a hell of a lot more than the US. But, we don't have to worry about that because I'm sure it will be "The United States of Mars" and become a strictly American venture and everyone else will be marked as a terrorist. =X
I think that if a company stoop to such a level, that they must try to trick the software on my computer to get its advertisement to me, then obviously the company is full of a bunch of sly-weasels out to exploit people.... just like spammers.
This is as bad as that swill known as channel one that is pumped into classrooms for 10 minutes everyday. I just can't wait until they start a program to convince school students that the TCPA is a great idea.
Well, if you have "show small icons on start menu", that little thing isn't there. When I use windows I always use this options, because I'd rather not have big ass icons on my start menu.
Not too many actually. Most of my drives are around 80gigs and I use FreeBSD, however my wifes computer runs Windows 2000 and the drive its installed on is 5gigs with FAT.. so just her I guess.
You don't have to have any money to own a computer. There is no limit to owning a computer (as stated above by rob_benson). And as I have said before and will say again, a P90 (or a little faster) running Windows 95 can handle many P2P program and they don't cost much at all. I recall a P90 costing about $10 on Ebay. And as for internet access, who said they had broadband? To me you sound like some damn redneck ranting about how Mexicans are stealing your jobs or something. Shut up, you're stupid.
This is probably one of the most intelligent and logical posts I've read so far. I'm glad to see someone has actually looked and analyzed the facts in the situation instead of attack this girl ranting about how she is "stealing".
Indeed. I once knew a girl who ran napster on a P90 with windows 95, which you could get for about $10 (not including shipping) on Ebay or really really cheap at a yardsale. And as for internet, it doesn't cost that much, infact maybe her grand mother or something paid for it.

Which leads me to believe the best way to discover the most about Mars (although expensive) is a human with a shovel, or a backhoe.

Business Model: Personal Computers? Internet? Where's our money?

What global warming? *TV In the background* "Did somebody say McDonalds?"
Neato. =) Even though I don't use XML.... why not Windows Media Player?
In America names cannot contain numbers, unless its something like Tom Smith IX.
I used LEGO's =)

Or sings "happy bithday to you".

I don't think those SCO jokes will ever get old. =)
I've been "witnessed" "hacking" when I remotely on IRC via telnet to my home computer.
