    Mr Franklin wasn't taking about your right to impinge on someone else's security. If a rocket fails, there's a decent chance that it will kill uninvolved people. This is a problem.

    For a more contemporary example: If a solo pilot crashes his plane in the desert, it's not a tragedy. He knew the risks and accepted them.

    If the same pilot crashes into a school, it's a different thing.

    nonsense... Do you have any idea how easy it would be to write a random (but still using real words) text generator? A few lines in your scripting language of choice should be enough.

    Or should we also stop using text for the content on web pages? Should slashdot convert all text to PNGs?
    (and how long until OCR makes that useless anyway?)

    I've heard him. In my opinion, he's purile, insulting, egotistical and in general, an ass.

    Turns out, being an ass is legal. I don't like his show, I won't listen to him, but he ABSOLUTELY has the right to do what he does.

    Isn't it funny how many people (not the poster I'm responding to, tho) only want freedom of speech as long as they agree with it?

    Uprising my ass... a small percentage of folks decided to go steal and kill, while most decent folks feared for their lives for 3 days.

    If you wanna talk about possible causes FOR that violence (poverty, racism, anger), maybe we can talk. But this was no 'uprising', it was days of criminals burning down their own city. I drive those streets, and 12 years later, many of the buildings are still burnt out or borded up. Quite the successful revolution, that...

    MSIE locks people into using winders (yeah, I know... Mac has MSIE, it's crap), so that's reason enough to keep it. Also, there is SO much stuff on the web that is written for flaws in MSIE... much of it doesn't work on anything else.

    Incidently, the # thing is an older technique that should have been eliminated a long time ago. Some folks don't want their functions showing, so they use this kludge.

    "users with good taste in software" is the phrase you're looking for. There's nothing bizarre about prefering better tools, especially for those of us who use computers 60+ hrs/week.

    There _is_ a fair bit of fanaticism around here... but that's not what's spreading firefox... the fact that it is flat out BETTER is.

    The solution to that is the ol' Hair O' the dog... when dealing with caffeine withdrawals (never last more than a day for me), I sleep as much as possible, and when I wake, chug a soda and go back to sleep. Dunno WHY this works, but it does.

    And yeah, I'm one of those folks who drinks soda and sleeps... between being tall, fat, and a programmer... ain't a measly litre of soda is nothing!

    Question, and apparently draw conclusions based on knee-jerk analysis. MANY otherwise sound craft have experienced unexpected behavior (including rolls) because of pilot error or overcorrection.

    This is why they use test pilots. These guys know how to recover when things go bad.

    You are right that the press has an obligation to investigate. But BEFORE that, you need to make sure you know what the hell you are talking about. The ability to publish does not prove the ability to speak authoritatively on the subject.

    Interestingly, atheists tend toward 2 camps:

    "Soft" Atheism - I do not believe in a god
    "Hard" Atheism - I believe there is no god

    The former is my camp, and makes a lot of sense. The latter strikes me as almost a faith in an of itself. Agnosticism if similar to the 'soft' camp.

    True. I also don't have proof that fluffy pink bunnies don't dance on my head in my sleep. Nor do I have any evidence that they do. So, should I believe in them? You can't "prove" a negative anyway.

    (Hint: they are different!)

    Interestingly, the priests don't all read the book the same way, either. One would hope that an all-powerful god could write a more clear instruction manual.

    How does this have anything to do with the Universe?

    The universe was created by a god, presumably... many would argue that a Creator (big "C") and his Creation are closely related or the same. If we're not talking about the universe (or existence, or the "IS" or whatever) then what are we talking about?

    OK... and I'm a christian except for the fact that I don't believe in jesus christ... You can't "except" the defining characteristic and expect your logic to hold water.

    I suppose I am giving you grief for giving people grief about following myth or god. That's fine. When evidence for god (or fluffy head bunnies) presents itself, you can all laugh at me. Until then, I'm going to stick to a more rational view of the universe.

    Regarding zeal: Am I zealous to observe the sky is blue? That fire is hot? No, these things (given an analytical - scientific - method) are provable, or at least very very likely. So, I base all my 'beliefs' on evidence... I see no reason to make an exception on this particular point, just because many people in society hang on to ancient superstition.

    Yes, I believe that most religions are probably wrong. No, I don't think they should be abolished, forbidden, whatever. I respect your (presumed) right to believe, whilst disrespecting the belief itself. What's the big deal?

    Finally (and here we clearly cross into Flamebait territory)... my 'zeal' is derived from an interest in advancing the species, not a fear of damnation. You might consider your motives before giving me grief for not blindly following some mythical god.

    The problem is keeping dramatic tension over a long period of time is really tough. For example, I love the miniseries 'V' (except for the cop-out ending). And the sunsequent TV series was pretty damned good for about 10 episodes or so... got into politics, some backstory, etc.

    Then, for some reason it became a friggin' lizard soap opera, and it got cancelled.

    An ad is supposed to quickly promote the best features of a product. An article summary is supposed to quickly highlight whatever is unusual or interesting about the subject. So there's a lot of overlap there.

    That said, this DID read a lot more like sales copy than a tech review.
