Um, Doesn't the Abrahm Main Battle Tank have depleted uranium in its armor? Seem to recall hearing that, and the taker in question wasn't really happy about it.
Depends... just because a bug didn't evolve to thrive on us doesn't mean that it will be benign. I believe that there a some bacteria that don't attack humans, but the waste products the produce are toxic. Kind of an incidental danger.
Of course, none of this means people should be paranoid, just caution when dealing with the stuff.
Hard to say... we've recovered terrestrial microbes from satellites that have been orbiting for years.
Granted, orbiting satellites are laregely protected by the radiation belts, but even low orbit (or even high atmospheric flights) has a lot more radiation than the surface of the planet.
A note on Wiki, while generally correct, there are constantly petty little "political" wars on there, so I wouldn't suggest it as the definitive, er... definer of words.
Maybe Webster, which agrees (I checked) with you that virii is not a word. In time, with common enough usage, it may be deemed a real word (email, "spam" in the email sense, etc. weren't in the dictionary 20 years ago).
Out of curiousity, how can you know the original poster's intent? Unless you ARE the OP, in which case, why hide behind the AC???
well, technically you could orbit at 100 feet, but the speed required would make you burn up... so the trick is a combination of high enough speed, and high enough altitude that you avoid most of the atmosphere. It has a nasty habit of slowing down and heating up moving objects...
If I felt like getting into a longwinded debate (I don't), I'd point out that discussing the "merits" of an "object of faith" for which there is no evidence is pretty pointless. It's like asking what a paintbrush thinks about politics... the very idea is a non sequiter.
Go look up Ambrose Bierce if you want more wordy and arrogant quotes:) that's where I stole mine.
I've done that too, although not just to be a jerk. When someone is trying to "return" stolen or broken merchandise, we'd give neighboring stores a heads up.
As a person who has (thankfully no longer) worked retail, I can tell you that this very often doesn't work. If it's clear that you're going to be an ass just to get your way, a lot of managers will fight back.
What's funny is when someone would go "Oh yeah, I'll go over to store-in-next-city and they'll return it". So I call the closest few branches of our store and say "Hey, this guy blew up his radio and want's a refund, don't give it to him", and they don't.
Being a prick isn't always the best route.
I've found the best route is to be as understanding as possible w/the clerk and they will often help you out. For example, I had a cell phone die, and they wanted to repair instead of replace it. I calmly talked to the repair manager "Look, I know about your policy. I've been in your position and I know what a pain in the ass this is... thing is, I gotta business trip tomorrow, and I REALLY need it, " etc. etc. She was like "ok, I understand" and helped me out.
I made sure to thank her again the next time I went to that store, and they got my business. When my burner needed service, they expedited it for me.
Oh, and Mods.... this fellow might be abrasive, but it's not a Troll, c'mon...
Nah, you were clearly trolling, so I resorted to really bad song parody. What can I say, it amuses me. Had it not, I wouldn't was the time on an AC troll.
Incidently, how exactly does one commit an ad hominem attack on an unknown person? Just curious...
Trolling Man Trolling Man Gets Attention any way he can Talks some smack Slings some shit Doesn't know tech, but bashes it... Look out, here comes the Trolling MAAAAAAAAN!
Sure, and this is the right approach to the problem. You support companies that act in a way you like, so both parties get to act freely and in their own self interest.
The approach I object to is the fanatical condemnation of anything closed, under any circumstances.
The problem is, many folks ARE demanding... whenever a new piece of software comes out, 1/2 the posts here are "why didn't they GPL it, those bastards", and it gets silly.
Yeah, this is why I use the term zealot. I like Linux (anyone bringing up GNU/Linux can bite me. I know the history and respect GNU. It's unweildy), in fact I prefer it. But I call BS on the altruism of the philosophy behind much of the movement.
If you wanna say "here's our stand, and we stick by it", I respect that. If you say "any stand but ours is unholy and wrong", then you are attempting to control and I have no use fer ya.
I wouldn't violate the GPL, as a programmer I respect other coder's work and time. But I also don't buy into the demand that EVERYTHING be GPL's, or whatever license you prefer.
The world ain't black and white kiddies, time to realize the intelligent people have differing opinions most of the time...
Yeah, but it's fundamentally different from a typical nuclear detonation, which is fission based.
Doesn't matter much, I was more or less messing around.

BZZZZZT! That's fusion + heat, not fission, but thanks for playing.

Not to mention Ebola and HIV (probably a mutated version of SIV)...

Ah I just figured the triple I was a typo.

Actually, Yes. Virii still isn't a valid word YET (give it a few more years and it will be)
well, sure... orbital speed (anything over R17) straight down would be a bad thing...
Um, I dunno. Is it?

I've often defined programming as the process of thinking "Oh, I am a GOD!!" and then "Jesus, how stupid can I be", several times an hour :)
Um... God? (see commandment 8)

Yeah, I had several valid responses. However, since reading that last line, I have zero interest in having the debate with an ass. Have a good day.
