True, this is also why the M16 doesn't have the range of the old M-14... you don't have to be a great marksman to use an assault weapon.
Incidently, the second (and current) version of the M16 doesn't go full auto, cuz you can't hit shit with accuracy (and you waste a lot of ammo). I have fired 1 full auto gun (an MP5) in both single shot & full mode. Full auto put 4 rounds into the target, and about 10 into the roof. Gimme a good ol' double tap any day:)
It's primarily because the Kalashnikov has (by design) extremely loose tolerances. To the point where bullets practically rattle down the barrel...
This is good in terms of reliability, since rust/mud/whatever does little to impact ability to fire, but it screws up accuracy. In close quarters, such as urban warfare, this doesn't matter quite as much, especially if you try to counter poor accuracy w/volume of fire. The AK is very popular in the 3rd world because it is cheap and it doesn't take a marksman to spray w/a fully automatic weapon.
Oh, I dunno... I think DNA mispronounced a number of names (i.e. "Zay-fod" instead of "Zahfud") in his own book... but he was a brit and they speak american funny:)
I see we've degenerated into a pissing contest. Whatever. Insert the "arguing on the internet is like the special olympics" bit here.
I'll respond to this though:
You'd think so, wouldn't you?
I have met a number of flameboys (from usenet and other environs) in person, and they almost always turn out to be insecure little people who are afraid to even look me in the eye. No, they never have the balls to talk that way to my face (it helps that I'm a big motherfucker). So, yeah... I'd think so.
I suppose that astute assesment of my intelligence, based on 2 lines of text, says all that needs to be said about snap judgements.
Ya know, it IS possible to converse on the internet without being a dick. It doesn't prove anything. You wouldn't talk that way to my face, so what's the point?
Eh, this (in regards to slashdot) isn't anything particularly unusual... in pretty much any society the unpopular opinion gets squashed, at least in the short term.
Sometimes, when the 'unpopular' position is both powerful and important, it can triumph. Think of Galileo, Darwin, etc.
That said, slashdot is largely the spontaneous conversation of thousands of somewhat anonymous people, hardly an 'important' arena in the grand scheme of things. I mean no disrespect, and I enjoy the site... but some perspective is helpful.
Well, the US _was_ supplying a whole bunch of material and equipment... and later troops. This in no way diminishes the incredible strength of britain in holding out so long, but w/o lend/lease and the eventual american reinforcements, things likely would turn out very differently.
You're right... in fact some folks are concerned that in 50 years or so, the earth will stop emitting much radio at all... so there are talks of setting up permanent beacons.
Also, a light division of SETI is being set up, that looks for flashes of (presumably) laser light that another civ. might be sending.
Per your first comment, I will remind you that the later films were during a huge civil war... you'd expect the galaxy to get pretty banged up in the process.
The oldest probe we have out there is a few billion miles away. Radio noise from the earth goes about 80 light years out (and increasing)... probes are the least of our worries:)
Yeah, but if you want someone else to be able to edit your code, it should be readable.
Stuff I write just for me (small utilities, etc.) can be 'clever'. Production stuff that others will need to work on is 3 times the size, but readable.
There are like a dozen sites out there that do this.
I hear. From my friends. At church.

Also, the AK is significantly less accurate than an AR-15/M-16/M4
Heh... at least we know the difference between a puddle/pond and an ocean :)
I wasn't aware that Blockbuster employed any grips...

Kinda like flying over Utah (where they stop serving drinks for a coupla hundred miles) ?
Eh, I'm not coming off particularly well either... I'm old enough to know not to feed the trolls :)

So, since being qualified isn't enough... what exactly does a black actor have to do to NOT be the 'token' ?
Sheesh... ya might reconsider what ya label racist there, pal.
Q: When will you people give this damn thing a rest?
A: 42
No, that doesn't work either...
and the answer for $200....
Because we don't want to spend several percent of the GNP to do it.
Ballast?

...I'm commenting on star wars continuity...

No one said you owned a gun.
Neither did I.
I DO in fact own one, and am responsible with it.
Silly AC... shouldn't you go back to AOL or something?
OK, but you're hardly making the case for sensible gun owners (of which I know many) by flipping out over a quick joke.

ah, I missed that. When I used to cashier, most folks who pulled this stunt didn't have the name.
I always figured that if you could fake an embossed credit card, then you could fake a (then - 10 years ago) much easier drivers license.
Incidently, this generally invalidates the card. Most cardholder agreements say that it isn't useable until you sign the card.
Not that anyone enforces this, of course...
