Your right I pay the devil for a OS that does it all. I hear these slashdot stories about how some obscure abacus won't run under windows correctly. Well the truth is at my house(where I am trying very much to be productive on linux) It is much simpler to run windows. You can say i don't do anything on my pc, but you have no clue what I do. I get every software tool i need free from the web. I guess those dumbasses just haven't started getting greedy yet. I don't need any support. Windows works. Sure I rebuild every year or so, mostly just cause i want to. The point of my input to this thread was difficulty getting the ISO. So some clod wants to play ModGod and burn some points. Thats fintasic. A linux company. Lets see. I can take the free work of individuals and wrap it up in package with my company name and feed the hungry kids in the back of my vette, or you can do it yourself with community help. Whats that? Where is the community? Oh they're on the web, maybe while your looking for help you can use a windows machine to hook up to the internet. Then when your done and you can browse fine on your machine(if there are drivers for your wireless card or modem or video card) you can hob nob with the really nice folks that just want to make an honest buck going bankrupt[i hear the benifits outway the tax loss] I guess your right I don't think there should be any linux business to hold back. A general purpose ready to run version of linux that exceeds windows usability, installablity, and I know your already coming up with a ton of reason thats already all here so i won't ramble on. I will just say this. My friend just graduated with degree in math and in computer science who wrote software(in linux) for a telescope in nevada or new mexico, my friend who is going to study physics for his masters while he teaches math at College station, had so much to call up a linux expert just to help him install a stupid usb camera that would plug and play in windows. The guy is ultra smart, and not a novice. How do you think this type of thing would make an average user feel? I bet if i paid my 66 dollars to mandrake so they could feed their children, they would take time out of their schedule to walk me through the same process. They would help as much as microsoft does. All they want is to make some money. Thats it. Its not about feeding kids or salvation. Its just money. The same bitch we have about microsoft. I don't want Mandrake to beat microsoft. That is schoolkids fighting crap. Grow up. When linux is better it will be on every desktop, not just on servers.
Anyways another person was nicer than you and made a suggestion I intend to follow up on.
Commercial like microsoft is commercial? They at least get the cds to me. Lets see. I paid 150 bucks for XP pro. I can still download free software to write code on it, and all my devices just seem to work. Mandrake charges 66 per year. So thats about even as far as support goes. Only Linux isn't a lexus yet. So here I am trying to learn about it and talking about how much nicer the new kernel will be. "maybe i won't have to wait 1 minute for an app to open?" That is probably just my ignorance you spoke of. Your an example of all those guys/gals that Know how to make it work, but don't know how to take the time and help others. Keep on modding us down. You hold linux back. You put your foot on it and keep it down, so that only the experts can use it. The issue i brought up has nothing to do with the commerciality of the product, but rather the issues related to obtaining the free version. Which as you stated they chose to provide. Boy they sure don't make it the easy, but they do provide. Good cut throat microsoftish tactics.
Sorry I would have laughed If any of the mirrors I tried didn't wait till 98 percent to tell me no. It is almost to consistant to be chance. I am a student with no job, trying to learn linux. I want the new kernel, because I want to believe it will help speed some things up. Its very frustrating. What I see is microsoft charging a hundred people a hundred bucks. And mandrake charging half as much to twice as many people, but without superb USB and driver support. So forgive my frustration as some moron mods an unrated thread down siting its overratedness.
I don't care if they mod it down. Little buddie nerds. Its the only power they have. I am trying to get a real issue on the board and it gets turned down just so people don't see it. Thats fine. It shows their true intent is not much different than microsoft.
I have been trying to download Mandrake 10.0 for everyone, and it keeps dying at 98%. Yeah I could join the club, but it would cost three weeks of gas just to get the basic package. I am glad that they are making money because thats really what linux is about.
I believe this would be an excellent feature. I know it would be great to have games running off of one console displaying on two tvs. It would make dual player games so much fun, and more realistic. It would also make single player RPGs easier to navigate and modify.
To propose that sharing code is by nature insecure is saying security can only be achieved through secrecy. It says once you have my windows code, windows is no longer secure.
I think if these guys had any brains they would give away a base version of windows that had enought functionality to be useful.
I love the classics, they are timeless. I think it would be nice to see them all redone so that the series could continue without changing actors again.
1. they also make a crap ton of money, don't have to work regular workers hours and get to visit the capitol for free.
2. Union members have to agree to the terms submit by the "boss", they can't back out if they disagree. Its like they just say they represent you, take your money, then do what they want most of the time. I have family members that are long term members, they feel powerless here. There is no contract resolution and still a strike. A strike with a preset end day and no goals to achieve.
I would like to know if these union members are setting themselves in a position to be fired for not working. Are they laying their entire career/retirement benifits on the line for two business days? I don't really see what the union is achieving here?
Can you tell me anything this type of strike will resolve. Is it just to lash out at the business in a demonstration of power? Are the employees that miss these two days laying their entire career investment/retirement on the line for two business days? Do you know if the negotiations will continue? What is the benifit here?
Thanks alot for the clarification. I am a beginning Noob... still learning how to change permissions,etc... the thing is I don't have any problems with windows and that is where "we" need to get linux, in order for it to be mainstream. To me there is the real fear that a poor intro could lead to a failure for linux and a success for windows. I have installed every version of windows, and besides waiting its been smooth.. I build my own machines.. I still have issues with linux, and i know your above me in experience. It seems we could come up with a unified plan, which seems lacking or too diversivied for the general population. I want to be a part of that transition... You know?
I thought we were trying to get linux off the High level PC user status, and closer towards the average user.
On a side note If i have a sound card, shopping for an OS to match it doesn't seem like the best method. For instance: If i am at work and upgrade a pc to a new OS at the request of Whomever, I don't go tell them NO because their sound card won't work. I install the OS and try the sound card, and worst case I switch. Which perhaps this guy should have done. By the way what is the ratio of supported soundcards for ALSA(sp) to Windows? and is this support standard across say nine distros. Please don't misconstrue my questions, I am merely trying to clarify the issue for myself.
I guess the homework your refering to, is the homework you do when you install a sound card on Windows. The distinction of note here is simple. A newbie can install on windows and has problems on linux.

thanks for the helpful advice. If more people were like you Linux would spread faster.
Why do you have to be like that. You know I mean the public release. I am not the only person having this problem.
I have been trying to download Mandrake 10.0 for everyone, and it keeps dying at 98%. Yeah I could join the club, but it would cost three weeks of gas just to get the basic package. I am glad that they are making money because thats really what linux is about.

This will be perfect for terrorists, they will no longer have to scope places out. Just go for a virtual tour.
that wasn't given away. it was stolen, its a little different.
How well did linux and unix work then? How available was it?
A base version of xp would be helpful to lots of people.
To propose that sharing code is by nature insecure is saying security can only be achieved through secrecy. It says once you have my windows code, windows is no longer secure.
I think if these guys had any brains they would give away a base version of windows that had enought functionality to be useful.
perhaps a collaboration between Jackson and Lucas?

One person could decide to change the password, and lock everyone out.
to reach that elevation?

Of course I understand the difference.
just because you don't expect to be recorded when I call your friends, doesn't mean they aren't recording you.
You really never know.
To quote nirvana: just because your paranoid doesn't mean their not after you...
Phone conversations come back to haunt everyone these days, ask scott peterson.
thanks, but i prefer the news paper hats we made as kids out of comics
It doesn't change what was said about them..
